This is a little off topic but I just finished reading a book on a 1953 American based coup - the overthrow of Mohammed Mossadegh, a democratically elected leader, in Iran.
The driving force begind it was Great Britain who were going to lose their oil interests. It makes some interesting conclusions about the unforeseen effects of the coup - such as the Iranian hostage crisis & speculates about the effects this coup is still having today.
If anyone is interested it is entitled "All The Shah's Men" by Stephen Kinzer.

Karim Sadjapour, an associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, was on The Colbert Report last night. Karim: I really think this was a selection, Stephen, not an election..... I think it was one man, one vote, and that man was Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme leader. Colbert: So you don't think it was stolen...you think it was given to him.... Karim: It was a gift from God and Ayatollah Khamenei. Sadjapour then went on to say that he covered the first election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad back in 2005....and he said the people didn't vote for him because he denied the Holocaust, etc.....they voted for him because he said he would put the oil money on their dinner tables....and he failed miserably. Iran's economy has been one of the most mismanaged....inflation has doubled, etc....so there is no reason that the people would want him back. You can see the clip here. It's around the 7:30 mark of the first clip.

Skilly:- Ayatollah Khameni is a good leader but Ryder would have done a much better job.
Toronthab:- A gift from god muct come from the Catholic church.
PTH:- Is Khameni pure laine?
CenterHice:- Now, now boys............

An interesting article about how both sides sincerely believe they represent the majority of Iranians: NY Times
