Strange move. New ownership has another direction in mind? Gainey just said: "the organization is going in a different direction"... If I'm Lever, I would be livid......He's done good with the farm team, and was even called up this year and some say he was even considered for head coach..... Les mois se suivent mais ne se ressemblent pas ! One month you hope of being head coach of the Habs, the next you're unemployed..... Guy boucher maybe is the "new" direction ? The "french" new direction ?

With the exception of a couple players most if not all of our prospects spending much time in Hamilton seem to disappoint. Guy Boucher is a heck of a coach, French or not. I wouldn't be upset at all by his hire.

With the exception of a couple players most if not all of our prospects spending much time in Hamilton seem to disappoint. I think that's a little harsh, many prospects actually looked very good coming straight from Hamilton but completely tail spin after some time in the NHL under Carbo/Jarvis/Muller/Melancon. It's a personal opinion but I think they want to go back to developing future potential coaches (like for Burns, Therrien, Julien) in the farm so unilingual English coaches isn't the way to go for the current "direction". As well, the farm coach must be perfectly aligned with the head coach so that players coming in can easily fit into the system (see RedWings). Maybe Martin didn't agree with Lever/Wilson vision.

Maybe we're all over complicating things, Gainey had Leaver up for a spell, perhaps he just didn't like what vision Lever was promoting?

Timing isn't the greatest. I heard on Watter's show last Friday that his brother-in-law (his wife's brother) passed away last week.
I can't blame him for being upset & voicing his opinion.

Jacques Martin must have a style of play in mind for the team, now Gainey has to help line up coaches in the farm that will coach along the same lines. It makes for an easier transition for prospects. Lever does like defense-first but tends to favour a much more passive trap. The Habs may be bringing in coaches that can teach a more "puck possession" game than either the Habs or Dogs played lately.
Guy Boucher is a very good young coach and he preaches good aggressive puck pursuit and a team that is always skating, with or without the puck. I could see that fitting in nicely with both Bob and Jacques.
This may be a little unexpected, but the Habs did tell Lever at the end of the season that he was free to talk to other teams. That seemed like a hint of a change in direction.
Maybe Lever and Wilson both drink Labatt's.

I have no problem with the firings but......the way Bob does his firing by phone call seem outright cowardly and unprofessional?Seems to me this should be done face to face how many guys do you hire over the phone? It maybe me but this irks me, Lever does deserve an explanation even one as simple as we want to hire a bilingual coach that can grow with the organization. If I'm Jacques Martin I ditch my phone Gaineys call is like another chapter in the ring.

The cost control starts. Phone calls are cheaper than air fares. And there's no security to go through.

.....maybe but for a club and a guy so revered thats bush league. It may roll off the back of most people not mine. Bob should remember that the next time he calls out other G.M.'s publically.

Habs interviewed four major junior coaches for the job apparently. Three from the Q, and some unconfirmed report that one was from the OHL.
Boucher (Drummondville), Vincent (Montreal) and Tourigny (Rouyn-Noranda) along with a possible Burnett (Belleville) - the last name is not confirmed in major media yet.
Is Bob trying to develop a new approach in Hamilton and do a little Montreal succession planning at the same time? Methinks so.
Bob also talked about the Lever situation in his PC today. He said he wanted to let Lever know that a decision had been made by management and wanted him to know about this decision right away, as this is a busy time for teams looking for coaches and he wants Lever, Wilson and Jarvis to have as good a chance to get on with another team by letting them know so they can get their irons in the fires.

Questions: How often does a minor league affiliate coaching staff get summoned to the big city to be dismissed? How often does the big club head down to the affiliate city to do it?
I'd say the answer is not often for both questions.
If Lever and company aren't happy about, well tough. Gainey and Martin have obviously developed a comprehensive plan. That plan involves a change at the AHL level as well. If it doesn't work, it's on them, but as long as they're calling the shots ...
Lever didn't find out from the media. Gainey called him, told him what was up, and that was that.

He did meet with Martin & then heard the bad news a couple of days later. Surprised a bit about Jarvis - I thought Gainey & him were very tight.
