RDS says the Leafs signed the monster Swede goalie to a 810K contract plus bonus. Solid D Star prospect in nets grrrr...

Why do they call him the monster anyway - he's something like 6'3". Wait till McGuire gets a hold of that one. Who knows about this guy - he's 24 & never played in the NHL. Their D is tough but if they trade Kaberle, who is your puck mover. At the very least, Burke is refilling the Leaf cupboard

This kid is less hyped than Brunsstrom, and we saw how he did. He was an average top 6 forward at best.
Until he does something concrete, we'll see. The Habs were never in the running because they don't have an opportunity to actually provide playing time. I doubt we missed out on much in the end, anyway.

I'm not sure if I would call Gustavsson a "star prospect". Yes, he had a fantastic season in the SEL but that's one season. The season prior his stats were much more "average" (I put it in quotes because I have no idea what average in the SEL is, although I assume since NHL teams weren't rushing out to get him they were closer to what one would expect of a goaltender at that level of play) - 2.40 GAA and a .919 SV% - and his play at the WC's wasn't enough to put him in the top five at the tourney. The top goalies were Mason of Canada - 1.00 & .964 - Mezin of Belarussia - 1.72 & .947 - Roloson of Canada - 2.17 & .930 - Bryzgalov of Russia - 2.08 & .929 - and Masaļskis of Latvia - 2.53 & .928. Gustavsson came in at 2.83 & .914 - well short of the marks set by other goalies, and while you may convince me that Bryzglaov, Roloson and Mason had better teams in front of them Mezin and Masaļskis certainly did not (Gustavsson had seven NHL players playing in front of him - Grossman, Oduya, Stralman, Enstrom, Berglund, Lundqvist and Ericksson - while Mezin had two NHL'ers - Salei and Grabovsky - and Masaļskis had one - Skrastinis).
He's good to be sure, and he deserves his shot. But at 24 he's had only one and a half seasons in the SEL (before that he was playing in division 1 and AIK). He's also not seen a single NHL game. By comparison Alfredsson (the patron saint of undrafted SEL players who hope to make the journey to play in the NHL) was playing in the SEL at 20 and was in a Sens jersey at 23. I'm not so sure he'll live up to that.

So, Swedish goalie signs with team most likely to need him. That tells me that a) the Leafs existing goaltending isn't that hot, and b) the new guy may not be any better but he thinks he has a shot.
I wouldn't trade our goaltending for their goaltending, would you?

Why wouldn't he sign with Toronto? I mean, Burke probably convinced him that the blueline corps he's building will protect him like no other.
And he'd be right.
Cheers.

And he should get to face lots of shots and keep busy because the boys cannot make an outlet pass amongst them. And he'd be right again.

It was sickening to listen to the Toronto media in the past week, especially McGuire and company at TSN and the morons at Sportsnet.
It seem that Burke was by far the biggest winner of the free agency, he can do no wrong, he's a genius. I don't know what this guy did to them, but this a$$ kissing is unbelievable. What did he do : Missed on his promise to get Tavares ? Traded Kubina for Excelby ? Signed Komi for 4.5M$ and Beauchemin for 3.8M$ ? And got a Sweedish Goalie...?
Is that really being a visionary and a genius ?
On the other hand, they all agree that Gainey was the biggest loser; too small, bla bla bla.
The only thing that cheers me up, is that those so called "experts" are usually always wrong....
I so hope Gainey proove everyone wrong and that Burke starts to taste some of that TO medecine after they missed the playoffs for a 5th year in a row

I am going to avoid that Leaf PR machine this year at all costs.
Last year, they set the bar as low as it gets....but I noticed a difference in their tone once Burke came on board. The Toronto media swagger is back.....
But it was hilarious last year when every good play was overly praised, and every mistake was a "learning experience". McGuire was one of the stars of that Jeckyll-Hyde sales force.

Especially Komisarek. $4.5 million over 5 years for a guy coming off a dreadful season & whose career high in points is 19?
Even Bill Watters at AM640 doesn't like this signing & he points to the Lucic beating as the turning point in Komisarek's season.

It was like they hypnotized Leafs "Nation" into thinking that it was allright to lose most of the time because at least they are fun to watch. Not sure what's fun in losing. I wonder how long the honeymoon with Burke will last..... The one in Montreal with Gainey lasted what, 5 years ?

The length of the entry-level deals decline with age as you get closer to 25. It's 3 years for 18,19,20,21, 2 years at 22,23, 1 year at 24. After 24 you arne't subject to the ELC rules. I might be off a bit there, but that's the jist of it.

It was November 13th in Boston, (just the 14th game of the season) with the Bruins up 5-1 in the third period. Game 2 against them last season, and the Bruins' first regular season win against us after losing 12 straight. Komi missed 16 games due to a shoulder injury as a result of that fight....(I remember Lucic doing his "Hulk Hogan" afterwards).....and he was definitely less effective when he returned. Watters may have hit the Komi on the head with that one.....

I think he had this opinion of himself as a pretty tough customer and when he got wiped and didn't tackle the problem head on by training how to fight better, he just never regained the confidence he needs. Is that why Burke is surrounding him with tough guys? Regardless, he has to do it on his own. He has to learn how to fight on the ice properly and take on Lucic again. He doesn't have to beat him, but hold his own. Until that happens, he's just another slug.

Komisarek misses about half of the big hits he attempts, takes himself out of position on half of those, can't back up the toughness with fighting prowess, forgets his coverage, has a horrible outlet pass, can't quarterback the PP, and doesn't put up offensive numbers.
I really don't know how he built his cache. In truth, he's a $4.5 million shot-blocker.

I never had as poor an opinion of him as you did, CO. After the Lucic fight, though, he really slid. In many ways, it's Laraques fault. Georges should have dropped the gloves on Lucic and started pummelling him early in the game. If Lucic turtles, he loses all respect from the real fighters in the league. KOmi would never have had to face him and loss of face would have been postponed for a while.

I remember him in fights before his two with Lucic and he really struggled to get those punches in there. A lot of wrestling, grappling, etc, but he couldn't wind up and throw them. I think he'll do fine in Toronto. New city, new team and new attitude. But, he still won't be a heavyweight contender. Cheers.
