Taken from Ecklund site (who takes it from the Chicago Herald), apparently Hossa may have a serious injury that needs surgery and could have sidelined for several weeks at the start of the season.
While this might appear like bad news at first, on a second look, this would give the Hawks some much needed cap relief. Hossa is an important player but they probably don't absolutely need him to start the season, Hossa stays on IR 'til December, the Hawks can keep their team together and Marian comes back in time for their run to the playoffs...
Am I too much of a conspiracy theorist ?

I would say probably. Even if Hossa is sidelined for two weeks, that would save them less than $1M of cap space. They need more substantial savings than that.
Now, they do have a lot of bonus cushion with Kane and Toews, and if they know that some of that bonus money is unattainable (i.e. bonus money for winning the Calder, which they're ineligible for) then that can help. I'll have to go back over the Schedule II bonuses at some point.

FROM: www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=451255Blackhawks' Hossa to undergo shoulder surgery Thursday, 07.23.2009 / 5:37 PM / 2009 NHL Offseason News The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that right wing Marian Hossa will undergo surgery tomorrow, Friday, July 24, on his right shoulder to repair a small tear in his rotator cuff. "Marian's injury did not respond sufficiently to our non-operative treatment over the last three weeks so we have collectively decided today to go ahead with the surgery," Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman said. "Marian is a franchise player and we want what is best for him and the Blackhawks long-term. This was a mutual decision and one we feel very confident is the right one." "Marian has a small right rotator cuff tear that he has been battling for a while and because he is not at 100 percent with non-operative treatment he is undergoing operative treatment tomorrow," Blackhawks Head Team Physician Dr. Michael Terry said. "With this type of tear we anticipate a four month post-operative recovery period, after which we expect his shoulder to be 100 percent. This is the best thing for Marian and his career long-term." "After consulting with my family and the Blackhawks, I have no doubt that this is the correct decision," Hossa said. "I plan on being a member of the Blackhawks for a very long time, which is why I want to get this done and begin my career in Chicago at 100 percent." ****** Ha, I'm such a cynic, I actually LOL'ed when I heard yesterday that he was having shoulder "issues". Twelve year contracts indeed Sort of reminds me of DiPietro and his 15 year contract (in 3 years, how many times has this guy been injured? Oh yes, 14 times. And he's had two surgeries in that time as well. Ah yes, $$$ well spent, LOL!)
