I heard elsewhere (I don't recall where, as I put little stock in such rumours) that the Canadiens would move Plekanec and Halak to the Hawks for Sharp, then bounce Sharp+ to the Sharks for Marleau.
I really don't know what this obsession with Marleau is quite frankly. Yeah he's 6-2, but he doesn't play like a man of his size. I'd rather keep Sharp if we could find another centre out there.

Marleau has one year left on his deal, no thanks. There is good and bad with this. On one hand it's true that you have uncertainties for future years but on the other, you have the flexibily to use the cap space elsewhere next summer if the experiment doesn't work to your liking.

I also understand that his game is much stronger when he plays the wing. I wouldn't want him as our number two centre unless we were sure he could play there.

I understand the obsession with adding a big 2nd line centre (I share that obsession), but would Bob really swing a deal that gets the Habs way over the cap and for a $6.3M contract that expires in a year (with his profound habit of not negotiating during the season)?
Marleau, like that entire franchise, has been bit of a big-game underachiever of late. Not sure that fits into Bob's new image of the team that he is trying to develop.

Interesting perspective from a Sharks blogger. He lists 10 moves that the Sharks should make to improve their team. #2 is trade Marleau for Pleks and Halak. His belief is that Halak will have a better career than Price (and be a future Vezina candidate), and that the Sharks would be foolish not to jump all over this - if there's an offer on the table. www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Ryan-Garner/The-10-Moves-I-Would-Make-to-Fix-the-Sharks/59/22314

His belief is that Halak will have a better career than Price (and be a future Vezina candidate) ...and I tend to think he could be right. I think we're undervaluing Halak as much as we're overvaluing Price. I definitely see a possible Theodore/Vokoun type of scenario unfolding.

I'm still not convinced on the Halak Price front IMO Price's problems are more about maturing and being tougher mentally. Honestly the lack of mentoring and monitoring of Price's fast rise and minor failings to this point fall totally in the hands of Gainey and the organization. Whom leaves a raw rookie all alone in a hotel room for weeks on end with no guidance, why was his weight and conditioning not even addressed prior, where was the veteran or organizational prescience when he was reportedly running wild all over town??? The kids 20 he's a millionaire he's from the backwoods and is idolized and practically canonized, what would you do? Talent wise Price is far superior and with the proper guidance he will emerge as the better goaltender by a country mile. Obviously he is going to have to work at his off ice approach and if he can overcome that he'll be laughing ....if he doesn't want to fight through the pressure's and temptations and is allowed to run free without any guidance then I agree Halak will have the better career. IF he can mature and balance his reported off ice activities and is mentored as he should have been we'll have our franchise goalie. HFTO

I think we can keep both (if we want to, but that's another topic) for at least another year (until both deals are up) if not the next couple. But you have to give them both equal opportunity. Keeping Halak as a "backup" does nothing to improve his trade value nor see if he's indeed the better goaltender.

I'm not going to judge the guy based on speculation from the Montreal media. As an aside. the Habs aren't the only team that lets young players live on their own. The Toronto media mentioned several times that Luke Schenn spent most of last season living in a hotel by himself and he started the season at 18. He didn't have a roommate until Brad May was picked up late in the season.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "come live at Mario's house" (or even at another veteran's place) type arrangement that Crosby had would be in the minority among most teams in the NHL.

Halak salvaged last season, no question.
He can be hot and cold....but, as when Garon was a Hab, I've always thought Halak, as a backup, has played as well as could be expected.....at times exceeding expectations.
Price has shown flashes of brilliance....but also the tendency to allow the weakest of goals.
He's got the goods, no question. CAN he put it all together?
At any rate, if Halak can be moved to round out the Top 6.....amen.

Halak is the complete opposite. He's a work horse. IMO, Price clearly needs a heavy dose of maturity and professionalism, he has world-class talent, but he won't make it big on talent alone. Which is why I was using the Theodore example. I think Montreal is one of the worst place to be for a kid with this kind of demeanor (NY being another bad place...) ...Obviously the organization wants to lean on Price talent, so they'll have to help him, help themselves. Heck Gainey took him with him last year, he wouldn't have done that if Price was doing fine on his own... Martin is apparently way more hands on, on and off the ice that Carbo was so that'll help too.

No doubt about it Doc and if things continue as they say Halak will progress and Price will just be another flash in the pan. It'd be nice to keep both especially if they both do get better but if Halak gets any closer you know eventually he won't be happy. In a perfect scenario Price is the guy and Halak can be dealt for a serious piece right now it'd be part of a package but if he has a rep of working hard he will be attractive just in salary and perceived potential. As far as Price goes regardless of the stories it's obvious he wasn't a sdedicated as he should be and had a hard time handling the pressures of a mad cow hockey town, thts where the organization should come into play especially with all the former playerts around etc. As with all players the team has to take some responsibility to guide them how many kids are professionals right off the bat only a select few. Look at Lats he was a gumball and now he's a workout fiend along with his buddy Lappy.

I think that Halak is too valuable of an insurance policy at this point. If Price takes the next step, this season, establishing himself as a top 5 or 10 goalie for the bulk of the season, then Halak should, and probably will be shopped.
If Price falters at all, Halak could very well take away the number role, making Price's future in Montreal uncertain. In this scenario, Price is still young, and might flourish in another city - but he'd be three strikes and out in Montreal.

I am quite sure there are a number of GMs around who would like to pry Halak from our grasp. He is young, exceptionally cap friendly and still has untapped potential worth exploring. The problem is that all those same attributes apply to our GM and why it would be premature to move him at this point. Price needs to demonstrate he is "the man", and can be consistently and without question. At that point your #2 or #1a becomes expendible. You can always round out a goalie tandem in the summer as lots of guys become available. However, there still are some big "ifs" to be answered by young Mr. Price this fall. I sure hope he comes through with flying colours, but I would not be taking that to the bank quite yet.

The latest garb out of Smukland had Halak Pleks and a prospect for Cheechoo and Erhoff??? Now if even true why would we be throwing in a prospect? ..................although it seems to Montreals' M.O. to throw in prospects...if it was Subban or another blue chipper I'd really be pissed. How Erhoff works in to this rumour with all of our D I don't know Chechoo would be worth the flyer he has hands and sandpaper but it doesn't address the second line centre position so even if true another deal would have to be in place. IF Halak is dealt I agree he does carry some weight so in any transaction the Habs better not get fleeced. In all these rumours given our cap space somebody or sombodies with some salary would have to be involved. HFTO HF TO

San Jose would effectively have to clear the entirety of Heatley's $7.5M cap hit to acquire him. I think that's why another team needs to get involved, because Ottawa probably doesn't want to trade for Marleau who only has 1 season left on his deal (and Ottawa doesn't seem a likely contender this season).
I think you'd be looking at Montreal getting someone like Marleau in exchange for A.Kostitsyn, Plekanec and change (D'Agostini?), and then San Jose would swing A.Kostitsyn, Cheechoo and picks to Ottawa for Heatley.
That's how it would play out at first glance. I can't say I'd be all that interested in trading Plekanec (sure) AND A.Kostitsyn plus extras for Marleau for 1 season, but it would provide cap flexibility next offseason.
It's worth noting that D'Agostini and Stewart remain unsigned and both would have to clear waivers to get sent to Hamilton next season. One or both would be likely additions in any trade.
Heck, the trade in the OP looks legit as a starting point. Plekanec (plus D'Agostini and/or Stewart) for Marleau, then Michalek and Plekanec for Heatley.
