San Jose would effectively have to clear the entirety of Heatley's $7.5M cap hit to acquire him. I think that's why another team needs to get involved, because Ottawa probably doesn't want to trade for Marleau who only has 1 season left on his deal (and Ottawa doesn't seem a likely contender this season). I think you'd be looking at Montreal getting someone like Marleau in exchange for A.Kostitsyn, Plekanec and change (D'Agostini?), and then San Jose would swing A.Kostitsyn, Cheechoo and picks to Ottawa for Heatley. That's how it would play out at first glance. I can't say I'd be all that interested in trading Plekanec (sure) AND A.Kostitsyn plus extras for Marleau for 1 season, but it would provide cap flexibility next offseason. It's worth noting that D'Agostini and Stewart remain unsigned and both would have to clear waivers to get sent to Hamilton next season. One or both would be likely additions in any trade. Heck, the trade in the OP looks legit as a starting point. Plekanec (plus D'Agostini and/or Stewart) for Marleau, then Michalek and Plekanec for Heatley. If San Jose came with that offer I'd say, very politely mind you, "sorry but no". I'm sorry, if San Jose is coming to us to do a salary dump (not that I see how we're going to take on salary, but anyway) then I want to fleece the Sharks and not the other way around. Marleau for a season is not worth Plekanec plus. He's barely worth Plekanec IMHO. Sure, I'll say he's more talented. But his contract sucks and is only good for one season. He doesn't use his size and is not noted for being any less of a dress-wearer than Tomas. Sorry - I don't like Marleau in particular and I certainly don't think we should facilitate another team at our expense. It should be to our great benefit, and I just don't see it here.

I agree New Guy why are we always tossing in players and picks???Especially in this scenario...... although we would have to dump some salary elsewhere to take on Marleau. I 've always liked Marleau but honestly looking at his career numbers they are far from impressive with the exception of a few 30 + goal seasons.

As much as I might have wanted him a couple of years ago, he isn't the answer . . . just another sideways expensive move

The Toronto Sun and G&M also have the same rumour. I think it's based on more than just Garrioch, but I agree that if I had to pick my referenced source, it wouldn't be him. This rumor is taking on a life of its own. TSN quoted the Ottawa Sun & now the CityPULSE 24 ticker is quoting TSN. Maybe I am trying to convince myself it isn't true because I don't want this to happen. One year of Marleau with his track record & contract isn't worth it.

It never fails to amaze me how a rumour, after several metamorpheses, can become fact. Especially when it begins with a guy who has to be on acid to come up with some of his lulus. Then a legitimate entity (TSN) picks it up and it becomes another creature altogether. I bet it was the emergency replacement to the 4th string Assistant to the Coffee Getter on TSN who decided it was newsworthy. It's a really slow hockey time. The blogster's take on it. dailyhab-it.blogspot.com/

The blogster's take on it. dailyhab-it.blogspot.com/As Pat Burns once explained, there is so many potential people from 2 or 3 different teams involved in trade talks (GMs, owners, coaches, lawyers, agents, assitants, players, etc...) that leaks awlays happen unless it's something that happens fast. As soon as there is negotiations going back and forth, there can be leaks. Internet just makes it way easier to actually communicate it... Case in point, the Lecavalier deal of last year which eventually fell through but had quite a bit of real details that made it to the net. I think there is way too much noise around the HABS right now to think that nothing is happening.
