High risk, high reward pick from what I've read. "Hockey Spy" lists him as his #4 dark horse, and think he probably has the talent of a 2nd/3rd rounder at least. He's pretty big - 6'3, 200 as an 18 year old - and plays a game not dissimilar to Artyukhin on TB.
I haven't read anything about his willingness to come to North America, which is the "risk" aspect of it.
edit: I should say Artyukhin when he was 18. Not currently.

Said to be an excellent skater and great stickhandler. Possibly a homerun. Fair sized right winger who can skate well. Some are tired of russians, but I think we have enough depth to try our luck. Honorable mention by TSN... www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?fid=7335

The biggest home runs of the draft nowadays are going to be Russians, who are devalued because of the lack of transfer agreement. Avtsin would have been a 2nd round pick or early 3rd back when we could pluck anyone from Russia.

I think it's fair ranking in the 2nd or 3rd.He had good numbers playing Dynamo 3. 2008-09 Dynamo Moscow Rus3 76 56 54 110 - 130

Four picks, four different countries. Our scouts were busy!
I really like this pick even given the risk factor. Big, wheels and skills. Sounds good on paper!

IMO, there's nothing wrong with taking a risk in the 4th round. Sounds like some real upside. If he has Artyukhin's mean streak to go along with his skill set, he could be a real find.

A little something from the Habs website.
“Montreal is a very good city and a very good team; the team with the most tradition in the NHL,” said Avtsyn with some translation help from Nikolai Vakourov, the Habs’ Russian scout. “I hope to come to North America after next year. “I play a physical style with lots of speed and a hard shot but I need to work on my game away from the puck. I will work hard to do it," added Avtsyn. "I try to play the same way that Ovechkin plays. Having the Russians around the Canadiens dressing room will definitely make it easier to be comfortable in Montreal, too.”

He's saying all the right things.

If there's even a remote chance he turns out like Artyukhin, it's a good pick. The Habs really need a big nasty talented player who scares other teams.

So this kid came over for both the combine and the actual draft. Seems like he wants to play here. TT says he plays a very NA style north-south game. Will be interesting to see if and when he comes over.

From Russian prospects dot com article on the top 10 Russian guys for this draft:
Avtsyn is an intriguing player without much exposure as he didn't play in the KHL nor in the WJC. But he's a very good player with excellent, smooth skating, very good hands and appealing size. Avtsyn can dribble through the opponents with relative ease thanks to his flair and technique, getting in front of the goalie who can eventually beat thanks to his good touch around the crease and finishing skills, which was proven by the big number of goals he scored this season. The competition in the Russian First League is surely not the best, but 110 points are always a good result, no matter which you are playing. Untested with legit competition, he's still a long shot now, but he has the ceiling and the size to do it through North America even if he has to learn how to use his size to his own advantage, especially in the corners and along the boards. Avtsyn had a whopping 56 goals and 54 assists in 76 games with Dynamo in the Russian third league. He also posted 130 penalty minutes.
