Our last pick of the day. I really love this pick, this kid is a good one from the USHL. Was named MVP for the World Junior A Challenge that I attended and also was the USHL playoff MVP.
5'1'' 187 lbs and fast. I really like this pick.
Edit: Oh yeah, yet another centre. I think we have a few more prospects in that position now after today!!

Ever since they started using the NCAA as their primary developmental tool, they've really gone after the College-bound players. Four NCAA draftees this year, 1 Russian and 1 QMJHL player.
I guess it can be said for every developmental process, but if these NCAA picks don't pan out this team is right screwed. Whether it's better to allow them to play in lower leagues a bit longer or force them to make the jump to pro (as the CHL does) is a matter of opinion, but we've got an awful lot of eggs in one basket.

In Future Considerations (Rated end of 3rd Round @ #93)
Name: Michael Cichy
Strengths: An improvement in his skating this year has helped him play an impressive two-way game… has the speed to separate himself from defenders…has the agility and soft hands to carry the puck trough traffic…has great vision and distributes the puck extremely well with crisp accurate passes...has a quick shot with some good velocity behind it. Weakness: The late bloomer has improved his trength and skating this year but size going forward is still a slight concern…some think the speed of the pro game might be too much for him to handle. NHL Potential: Playmaking Forward. Boom or Bust Potential: High Risk / High Reward.
Scouting Report: (From ISS) Cichy has quick feet and a nice burst of speed out when breaking out of defensive zone. Shows excellent vision and passing skills. A tenacious attacker he has a good overall skill set. Good 'on-ice' instincts/anticipation enables him to be both in the 'middle of the play' and making plays at the same time. Was tops in USHL scoring during playoffs – 25 pts in 13 games – leading Ice to USHL Championship. Originally selected by Halifax in the 3rd Round of the 2006 QMJHL Draft, chose NCAA route and will play next season at the University of North Datoka.

I was going to post the same thing ... Mr. Timmins seems to like one particular stream of players. A stream I have absolutely no confidence in ...

Yeti from HF had this to say about his first hand reports on Cichy.
I have season tickets to a USHL team (Lincoln Stars), so I have seen my fair share of Cichy....and your other draft pick (Leblanc).
I'm still a little shocked Cichy went so low in the draft. The kid can put up points like nobody's business. He lacks the grit and nastiness that Leblanc has, but he is just as gifted offensively as Leblanc...and more so than Danny Kristo, imo. Cichy is a horse on the PP. His stats with the man-advantage are incredible.
I thought Montreal drafted two of the best players the USHL had in the league last season. Very well done.
I don't think Leblanc has what it takes to be legitimate first line NHL center, but I really believe he can be a good second line center. He's scary on the PK. I've seen him skate around and entire team while a man down, and score goals. He isn't afraid of the corners either....he'll get his nose dirty if he has to. Unlike his teammate last season in Danny Kristo, Leblanc shows a lot of passion on the ice. Great pickup, imo.

A few more random facts about Cichy.
He was second in USHL scoring this past season after a trade from Tri City to eventual champs Indiana (Leblanc was 10th and Kristo was 13th).
He was the league leader in scoring in the playoffs, setting a league record in the process.
He has been invited to the US WJC evaluation camp along with Danny Kristo.
The Danny Kristo connection is strong. They roomed together when they were on the USNDP team together and plan to room again in North Dakota this fall.

A nice read. You always wonder what some kids that are not top ranked do on draft day...apparently some go tubing at a church outing. Did I mention I really like this pick...lol. When I went to see the Team USA games in Camrose last fall it was mainly to check out Kristo and that huge defenseman Helgeson, but Cichy just seemed to keep getting points and was named tourney MVP. His offensive hockey sense is as good as Kristo's speed...as both left an impression on me. www.thehockeynews.com/articles/27102-The-Straight-Edge-Delivering-a-digital-draft-dream.html
