He passed away from pancreatic cancer, the same disease that took my dad last November. Patrick was 57 years old.
I remember when "Dirty Dancing" and "Roadhouse" both came out. They were overnight successes. He also did "Red Dawn" a few years back.
You know, Mrs Dis and I were at a Jeff Healey concert a few years back. We couldn't watch this guy without thinking of "Roadhouse" and Patrick Swayze.
One word describes him best for me ... cool!
RIP Patrick and thanks man!

I was listening to the radio on the way into work this morning and the one DJ (is that what we call them nowadays?) said she felt that Patrick Swayze affected generations of women with "Dirty Dancing." It was supposed to be the little movie no one was going to give a hoot about.
Well, it didn't turn out that way did it?
Cheers.

Mrs. Reaper owns a VHS, DVD and now BluRay versions of Dirty Dancing....She must have watched that movie 100 times!!

Red Dawn = Patrick + Jennifer Grey pre-Dirty Dancing. I forgot she was in that movie. I mostly remember C. Thomas Howell (and Patrick) in that one. Of course, that was during the "Outsiders" phase of my life.
The mini-series North and South was one of the best I've ever seen. Lots of great talent.
Never saw Ghost, so I still don't understand what all the fuss was about...
R.I.P. Patrick.
(PS to Dis: sorry about your dad.)

I don't know, Val . . . something about this, I think . . . . . . but Whoopie scared me away from sitting through it [besides, there was probably a Habs game on -- priorities, ya know].

I actually enjoyed "Red Dawn" quite a bit back in the day. These teenagers were able to lead the rebellion against the "Russian Bear" in their own part of Smalltown USA. Thank you

I read a blurb that said the director of "Ghost" wanted Kevin Kline for that role. Swayze was in tears several times reading through the script at home, and blew the director away at the audition.
Lots of stage and screen productions have had others pencilled in (or even cast) and changed.
Buddy Ebsen as the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz is one example. He started as the Scarecrow, but changed roles with Ray Bolger, who was originally cast as the Tin Man.
After recording all the songs, rehearsals, and some days filming, Ebsen became ill...as a result of the aluminum dust in the makeup. He was forced to bow out. Jack Haley got the job (and they changed the makeup of the makeup.)
It would be difficult to imagine Bolger as the Tin Man, and Ebsen as the Scarecrow, wouldn't it?
So, too with imagining Kevin Kline in "Ghost" instead of Swayze. I thought he did a wonderful job....and Goldberg, in 2008, credited him as the reason she won the Best Supporting Actress role for that movie.
Horrible way to go....and way too early.
