Professional golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car accident early this morning, the Florida Highway Patrol just reported.
Woods, 33, pulled out of his driveway in the Isleworth community about 2:25 a.m. when he struck a fire hydrant, and then drove into a tree at his neighbor's property, FHP reported.
Woods was transported to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee in serious condition, FHP said. No other information about his condition has been released.
A Health Central hospital employee said at 2:30 p.m. that Woods was not a patient. A hospital operator would not say if Woods had been treated and released.
FHP said the airbags in Woods' Cadillac Escalade did not deploy, which means the vehicle was traveling under 33 mph.
Orange County Fire Rescue received the call for aid at 2:28 a.m. Woods was transported from his Windermere-area neighborhood by the hospital's own ambulance.
FHP did not report the accident until just after 2 p.m. today. The agency said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. Orlando Sentinel

It's the "charges are pending" thing that makes me wonder. I could guess [alcohol?] but speculation does nothing . . . need to wait for the full story.

I was listening to AM 620, some American sports station, on the way home and they said that while charges are pending, alcohol is not a factor. Just saw it on www.canoe.ca as well. He's been released from hospital and was treated for facial lacerations. Hope that's all. Cheers.

The agency said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. The only thing that comes to mind is willful destruction of public and/or private property. But I'm neither a cop nor a lawyer, so... I do hope that he will be okay.

Woods did with his vehicle what he never does with his golf ball.
Driving it off course....into a water hazard....bouncing off a tree.

Talk about total lack of facts. About all we know for sure is
a) it was early, early morning b) his vehicle hit a tree.
Everything else is a story by him or his wife. How are we to know he didn't have some flaming row with his wife and was storming out of the house? As he leaves, she throws a golf club at him and he swerves into a tree. That fits the reported facts. A window or windshield was broken, puportedly as his wife was 'saving' him. From what? Carnivorous squirrels?
IN any case, very fishy, very odd and I would be very skeptical of any story, that Woods, his wife or spin doctors spew out. Personally I like my explanation much better and I expect to see it as fact, shortly, in the National Enquirer.

Good for Tiger not talking with press about it. As much as he's a celebrity and a sports icon, it's none of our damn business.

If it is a domestic issue .... then yes, I agree with you, it is none of our business. But the police think it is worthy of at least discussing (and Tiger has refused to speak to them 3 times now .... gotta get that story straight you know) and if laws were broken then it most certainly is our damn business.

The fine is less than $200 and "4" points. Wonder if he's going to fight it or ask for a payment plan. I really don't mind Tiger exercising his rights and not addressing what he considers a private issue. If Clinton kept his mouth shut and didn't get caught in his lies it too would have been a private issue. The cover up is always worse than the infraction. If you drew a 5 mile radius around Tigers home, how many John Smiths in the circle had divorces, affairs, automobile accidents, domestic squabbles and traffic violations. No foul, no harm. His wife strikes me as a woman that can take care of herself. She strikes Tiger that way too. Swung her driver at the Escalade windows and putt a hole in one. I'm sure there will be lots of jokes, but there in no joy in the misfortunes of others.

I'm sure there will be lots of jokes Scads! My favourite thus far: What's the difference between a car and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball 400 yards. Followed closely by: Tiger crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant. He couldn't decide between a wood and an iron.

Followed closely by: Tiger crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant. He couldn't decide between a wood and an iron. I got an email today with all the Tiger jokes ... well 10 of them ... One: Tiger Woods is so rich that he owns lots of expensive cars. Now he has a hole in one. Two: What's the difference between a car and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball 400 yards. Three: Tiger Woods wasn't seriously injured in the crash, but he's still below par. Four: What were Tiger Woods and his wife doing out at 2.30 in the morning? They went clubbing. Five: Tiger Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree. He couldn’t decide between a wood and an iron. Six: Perhaps Tiger should be using a driver? Seven: This is the first time Tiger’s ever failed to drive 300 yards Eight: Apparently, Tiger admitted this crash was the closest shave he’s ever had. So Gillette has dropped his contract. Nine: After a wayward drive, Tiger Woods found water before nestling behind a tree. Ten: Apparently, the only person who can beat Tiger Woods with a golf club is his wife.

Woods' official statement.....
"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart," Woods said on his Web site. "I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.
"Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.
"But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don't share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one's own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions.
"Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it's difficult.
"I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good luck to Tiger. As much as he is just a man who deserves his privacy, he's just too iconic. He's Elvis/Ali. The media is on to it....alleged voice mail, alleged affair being chief among the dope.....and they won't let it alone. Too much money to be made on scoops and pictures. This is a man who is trying to put the genie back in the bottle....and keep his lucrative endorsements. Lots of money/interests riding on this story going away....and not going away. ----------------------------------------------------------------

I want to take this opportunity to come clean and admit the 31 month homosexual relationship I have had with Tiger Woods. I am not without faults and am not perfect. If Tiger will deposit $1,000,000 by Friday, I will recant this statement. After Friday I will make myself available to the press and television for interviews at $250,000 per sitting. My biography is underway, and I am accepting offers of advances. I regret any embarassment this has caused my family. Tiger; I hope we can continue to be friends after this is all over.

All the kidding aside, Woods' domination has dropped somewhat in the past little while. I thought that it might have been because he really never fully recovered from his knee operation.
However, now, as with so many other celebrity issues, we're only privy to the surface symptoms of a much larger problem(s) underneath.
I don't know what transpired and, frankly, I don't care. What I do hope will happen is that Woods gets back the form that makes him the standard by which other golfers are measured.
Love 'em or hate 'em, he sells the game like no other golfer out there. He's the face of the sport and it's bad for the sport to have him out.
Cheers.
Oh, and when he does come back, I hope Mike Weir hands him is butt!!

The DJ on my hip-hop station beat you to this confession In all seriousness, I don't get it. Really, I don't. And I know women do it too [and I've certainly got Mr. Val somewhat worried that I will throw myself at Cammy at the first opportunity, but in all reality I'll probably faint if I'm lucky enough to ever meet the man], but why do men cheat? Don't understand... just don't.

interesting that you asked . . . "You've put on a great show ... You're 10 feet tall. So what are you going to do, go back to your hotel room at midnight and wring out your socks?"
We assume that celebrities cheat because they're unable to resist the adoring temptresses fawning on them at bars and night clubs. But it's more primal than that: The sound of a cheering crowd seems to switch on an ancient alpha-male circuit in a man's evolved brain. A sense of entitlement, developed in our distant simian past on the African grasslands, asserts itself, promising the chance to spread one’s progeny far and wide across the savannah. For the 10-foot man, every female in the troop is suddenly fair game.
When alpha males cluster in groups — in rock bands, on sports teams, or perhaps on the PGA tour — the instinct grows stronger: Predatory extra-marital womanizing becomes a normal form of bonding activity.more herean excuse? perhaps. but we're not all like that [or perhaps we are but the majority are never given the chance to find out]

With celebs (male & female, straight or gay), they're constantly surrounded by the temptation/opportunity, usually with all the trimmings: wealthy/famous/socially powerful/gorgeous people.....and most of all..."willing". Gold-diggers and sycophants abound as well. Throw in some other stimulants.....
Wealth, power, and fame speak loudest. How else does Larry King end up with his bevy of model wives?
Tiger Woods ended up with a Swedish supermodel. Think that would've happened without golf?
We put these people on pedestals and are suprised when they are human....although I do believe there is a sense of entitlement about them. Wealth, fame, adulation has done that to a lot of people. I'm never surprised to learn of questionable moral character among this lot. In fact, I'm surprised we don't hear more of it. And we likely will now, with the constant additions of news-gathering devices/toys available to the general public. And as franko said, how do we know it wouldn't happen to us?

If anyone ever hears anything about one of our guys indulging in this behaviour, please don't tell me. As a matter of fact, if you need to start a thread about it -- put a NSFVal warning on it.
Ok, I feel sick now. I need to go read up on some more hockey to get my mind off this...

Don't understand... just don't. I think Franco answered the question. When I was younger and the hormones were rageing, stopping by the bar and doing the deed was of paramount importance. It wasn't so much the sex as winning the game. Getting a chick into bed was the challenge and once accomplished it was almost always less satisfying than the chase. I still enjoy the infrequent occasion where I find myself in a bar with some buddies and using charm and wit to amuse some strange woman. My looks are now a liability instead of an asset. I no longer do anything more than talk to a girl as the risk/reward of taking someone to bed isn't worth it. Wife and kids vs one night stand, not even close. I'm from the old school (after the pill and before Aids). I'm glad I grew up when I did and am terrified of STD's. Tiger is married to a beautiful woman, wonderful kids, charity work, money, adulation, fame, success in sports. He travels with athletes and sees them enjoying themselves. Does he stand back, return to his hotel room, or join his pals in some fun. I think his wife is as close to perfect as can be, but after 364 nights with the same blonde, a brunette might look nice. I really don't think it's a big deal. What he did was foolish, but if he doesn't comment or get caught in a lie, it's not a big deal. By the way, who is the DJ? I haven't met anybody who's attempts at humor is as sick as mine. By the way, does the press think he still is an asian with some multicultural black heritage or is he now a black athlete who cheats on a beautiful blonde wife? Never underestimate the power of the press to unfairly attack individuals when they are vulnerable.

Getting a chick into bed was the challenge... Yes, I do get that part, but when you're married/engaged/in a committed relationship, this is just wrong in my [and a lot of other people's] books. I think his wife is as close to perfect as can be, but after 364 nights with the same blonde, a brunette might look nice. I really don't think it's a big deal. What he did was foolish, but if he doesn't comment or get caught in a lie, it's not a big deal. Fine, look but don't touch. You can look at the menu but don't you dare order. And it is a big deal. He is married to Elin. He needs to respect those vows, otherwise why did he bother taking them? [In case you haven't figured it out, I'm RC, married in the church and still attend on a regular basis.] By the way, who is the DJ? I haven't met anybody who's attempts at humor is as sick as mine. Frankie Hollywood 101.3 The Bounce Halifax's New #1 Hit Music Station! Mr. Val hates this kind of music. He calls it my "hood music". I call his music "old white guy tunes". And just to put the record straight: no matter how hot Cammy is, I'm not ruining my life with Mr. Val by throwing myself at Cammy. Not even if I get the chance [which I won't]. Not even if I know I'll never get caught and no one will ever find out. First off, I lose all respect for myself. Secondly, I lose respect for Cammy, as he has a girlfriend. So, I may talk crazy nonsense about Cammy, but it's not happening. EVER. And that, my friend, is probably more than you wanted to know... but with me, you get the whole package, rants and tears and craziness all rolled into one ;D

Nobody is perfect. Tiger never shot an 18 for 18 holes. He had sex with a woman who wasn't his wife. He didn't rape anyone. He didn't have sex with a minor. He didn't kill anybody. He didn't vote for a Democrat. He didn't steal. He didn't take drugs (so far we don't know) He didn't abuse his wife with a golf club. He didn't strap a bomb around his child and send him into a crowded mall. He didn't trade Ribeiro for Ninnema. He didn't.... He didn't.... There are lots of commandments he didn't break. Ghandi had lots of mistresses beside his wife and Mother Theresa picked her nose when nobody was looking. When you attend church on Sunday, look at the confessionals. They will be full of people that did something during the past week. Maybe you ate a piece of cake with 1000 calories or smoked a cigarette that you swore off. Maybe, like President Carter, you lusted after Cammy in your heart but didn't follow through. I'm not taking a shot at you. I'm sure I did much worse things this past week than you did. We don't know exactly what he did or how often he did it. So far I don't think it's a big deal.
