For those of you who really like Josh, why? I'm not being snarky here, I'm interested in knowing why there is so much love for this guy. That chart was... well, not very informative from my point of view. I'm sure it has its merits and yes, I did notice that no one else from the Habs was there. If Markov was healthy, he would have been ranked higher than Josh, yes? Probably because I don't usually scrutinize Josh's on-ice play, the one game where I had no choice because they wouldn't take the camera off him, all I could register was the fact that he could not get the bloody puck out of our zone; he just kept banging if off of the opponent's sticks and skates. How is this considered excellent skills? Still not convinced I want to like Josh, he is after all a Hab. Concrete examples, folks! I promise to keep an open mind, but what am I supposed to be looking at that will impress me about Josh's play? Because asides from the "let's be a goalie" move behind Halak, I'm not seeing it... Anyone?

I wouldn't say I like him but I have no problem with the guy. When used properly he's a servicable low pairing D.

I wouldn't say I like him but I have no problem with the guy. When used properly he's a servicable low pairing D. Well, that doesn't help either I'm just wondering why the guys who were all gung-ho about Gorges being named captain [over Cammy, no less] are not presenting their arguments as to why I should like this guy. I mean, if you're pushing his name for captain, there has to a reason, right? I mean, I have my reasons as to why I think Cammy should be captain: 1. best goal scorer on our team 2. Canadian boy 3. involved in the community 4. fans seem to love him 5. media does love him 6. I love him 7. and he's sexy to boot Yes, I know reasons 6 & 7 are non-reasons, but hey did you expect any less from me? So once again, why the love for Josh? What am I not seeing in this guy? Because I'm at a loss...

Gorges is a leader in the room, even if the media doesn't come to him. Since being what was considered a throw in in the Rivet deal, he's developed into a solid top 4 guy. He's not great at any one aspect, but does most things pretty well.

I'm not that big a Gorges fan myself ... although I don't hate him either. I think he is a perfect fit on this team when on the second/third pairing.
But it would appear you are looking for a statistical reason to like Gorges.
He leads our defense corps in plus/minus He is second among the d-corp in hits

as pointed out, he is a leader in the room
he may be quiet and understated, but for the most part he gets the job done
BLNY points out that he does most things pretty well . . . I go further: you hardly hear his name mentioned when he is on the ice -- and Martha is right: for a d-man that's a good thing. he isn't being paid to score goals or use a [underused] booming slap shot on the PP -- he is supposed to be in the right spot at the right time, and by and large he is. no flash, he just does his job and he does his job well
why over Cammy? because he's been here longer . . . and because I think his personality would fit the job better than Cammy.
You forgot reason number 8: last name starts with "C"

The guy isn't overly big but he can take a big hit and spring back up like nothing happened to him.
I also like the defensive polish he brings to the game as well. For a throw-in the guy has been very reliable and as it turns out, he isn't afraid to speak his mind.
I'm actually rather glad he's part of our defence corps.
Cheers.

Okay, so tonight I'm supposed to look for: 1) delivered hits and being able to spring back up after being hit 2) when he's on the ice, chances are a goal will not be scored by the opponents 3) his dazzling personality Very good, I will apply myself to looking for these qualities. If Marc-André's out there at the same time, I might get distracted and look at him instead. But I will try my best to observe Josh tonight. [But he's still Mr. Broody to me... maybe if he grew in his hair? He just looks angry a lot, and how can that possibly be a good thing?]

And no, because I'll probably still be distracted by Marc-André... especially if he pulls a couple of those moves of his, you know, the ones that make me have kittens

he goes into the corners FIRST, unlike MAbreezy
he take big hits to make plays, unlike the kostitsyns
he is one of the best stick checkers in the league
he's 6'0" 190ish and isn't afraid to get hit by guys who got 4 inches and 30 lbs on him to make a play
he's the smartest d-man in our zone, easily.
he was captain of the kelowna rockets and won the memorial cup
he has more hockey intelligence in his left hand than MAbreezby has in his entire body
he's durable, is a great interview and hates losing
make no mistake he is a leader in the dressing room
he only costs $1 million
he's young, and can make a great outlet pass, again unlike MAbreezby, whose only skill is shooting the puck
he'll drop the gloves

GF#25, now that's the kind of response I was looking for, thank you! I think you're being harsh on Marc-André, but I'm very biased, because I have a girl-crush on him Still don't see the thrill of Josh's interviews, I'd rather listen to Cammy. But I will try to pay attention to Josh, as I said earlier, to see if I can see what you guys see in him. Not that I ever think I will "love" him, but it would be nice to not be indifferent towards the man [I'll leave that for BGL and the K Brothers].

Still don't see the thrill of Josh's interviews, I'd rather listen to Cammy. Well, I need to change my attitude on Josh's interviews Last night, on Le journal des Canadiens, they had a chat with Josh. I can't remember the exact question, whether it was "who is the best player" or "who do you like the best", but the choices were Crosby, Ovechkin or Malkin. Josh said Crosby! Made my day [But then he said his fave band was Metallica... ewww]

My only complaint with Georges is that he likes to chase the puck and leaves his "zone" unprotected, leaving an opposing player to get a scoring chance if Gorges looses a battle against the boards, or the player beats him to the puck.
Also his passing isn't that great, you'll find that a lot of his passes are in the skates of the players he is passing to.

Georges is a safe, smallish defensive defenseman. Not too strong and can't clear the crease. Lately I've noticed that he is slow too getting beaten by unremarkable forwards for loose pucks and breakaways. Oh my goodness, agreeing with Val again?

Stop it, people will think we're up to something Actually, speaking of Josh... I was playing gin on the computer, which is usually a guaranteed "glued to computer moment". Mr. Val had the tv tuned to Sportsnet and he says: "Hey, it's Josh Gorges!" I had to ignore gin for the length of the interview And I've found something else to like about Josh: he's got this wicked massive cross tat on his arm -- love it! And I don't like tats as a general rule. So go figure...

My answer would be that Gorges is a solid contributor. He's playable in just about any game situation: you can play him on the PP, PK, with Markov, Gill or with MAB. He's fairly invisible, but fact is, for a defensive defenseman, that's a good thing. He'll take a hit to make a play, get the puck out efficiently enough, and will rarely get himself into trouble.
I think a big part of our troubles this season is how we lack guys who can play in any situation - Gill scares me when he's not in our zone, MAB scares me whenever he's on D, Spacek has issues..... Hamrlik, Markov and Gorges are the only guys I'm comfortable with out there in any situation, and that's a large part of Gorges' value: his best games, he's quietly efficient and unnoticeable (which explain why it's hard to identify what he does well - he's never the very best at anything).

This, people, is why we should all like Josh: "I was in and out of the lineup and wasn't playing a whole lot," he recalled. "I remember in Ottawa where I was scratched for a game and (Bob) said, 'Come meet with me.' I thought for sure I was going to be sent down or traded again. But he just wanted to talk - settle me down and tell me how things were going to look. He helped me through it. I was ready to pack it in and he actually took me aside to give me that boost of confidence to keep going and keep fighting.
"I respect him so much - not just because of his position with the team, but because of the person he is."
Cool quote from Josh Gorges

Better question... What's not to like about Josh Gorges?
Consumate team player Will do anything to win Leader Never injured, remember that puck in the head last year? Stitched up and played next game. Rarely makes mistakes Just all round solid. A real integral part of this team. Very happy he's a hab.

Never injured, remember that puck in the head last year? Stitched up and played next game. Two years ago (maybe), I also seem to recall him taking a skate (or it could have been a stick) to the face, and asking the ref if he was okay. Ref said yup. Gets back to the bench and one of the boys tells him to get looked at. They used the glue on the cut, but I *think* he still needed stitches afterwards. Didn't even miss a shift. And he had a goal last night too
