I know we discussed restaurants before, but I'm wondered if it wouldn't be a good idea to make a thread for it. Might be handy if you're traveling to know of a few good 'hole-in-the-wall' or high-end spots. Here's one we found yesterday in the Ottawa Valley town of Kemptville. The Five Star restaurant was recommended to us by the friends we went to the game with yesterday. It's located on (old King's) Hwy 43, which is off Hwy 416. It doesn't matter which way you're going, just take the turnoff and go into Kemptville. Go through 2 roundabouts, keep looking for the MacDonald's (on the left) and the restaurant is located in the plaza behind it. It's on the extreme west side of town as you drive to Merrickville. The menu has everything; Chinese food, steaks, hot sandwiches, veal parmigiana, and huge portions of everything. I had a very generous portion of smoked meat (thick slices) with chips, coleslaw and a pickle. The rye bread and mustard came on the side. I could make several sandwiches or one huge one if I wanted. And like a lot of Valley spots, the locals working there are down to earth, good folks. Here's a few opinions about the restaurantHere's the mapCheers.

This could be an interesting thread. I'm fond of hole-in-the-wall type places and like to discover new ones. I find that sometimes you get the greatest food at the most unlikely places. Restaurant: Japadog Cuisine: Asian fusion street food Price per Meal: $ ($5+) Reservations: not needed Meals: Lunch Features: The humble hot-dog a la JaponaiseLocation or Link : www.japadog.comComments. For those visiting Vancouver/Whistler for the Olympics and who like Japanese or "east meets west" type street food, an interesting place in the Vancouver downtown area where you can get a cheap lunch that's quite unique is Japadog. An old favourite has been reinvented with an Asian twist. This is not the type of hot dog that features grilled bratwurst or beef sausage with mustard, ketchup or relish on it. Rather, they offer Kurobuta (pork), beef, turkey or veggie sausage on a fresh bun garnished with stuff like wasabi mayo, teriyaki, radish sprouts, sesame, miso, edaname, nori and bonito flakes in accordance to the type of 'dog ordered. The combination of ingredients sounds odd but, after some initial trepidation on my part if not outright skepticism, I found they tasted really quite good.

Quebec city: underdog steakhouse There are many reknown expensive steakhouse in Quebec: Le Beffroi, L'entrecĂ´te St-Jean, Le Charbon... I tried them all. Tell you what, for a fraction of the price, try out Le Rascal www.lerascal.com/accueil.htmWhile that steakhouse 80's look and feel isn't "trendy" in any way or form, personnaly it has a certain something to it... But anywhoo... The idea is the food (steak and sea food) and for the price, you'll get your money's worth... Fer sure.

Napanee Fish and Chips: Whether you're heading to Toronto, or heading to Ottawa via Hwy 401, this restaurant is located on Hwy 41 as you pass by the town of Napanee. Take the Hwy 41 turn off and go north. You'll have to go about 500 metres and the restaurant is located on the right just after a used car dealership. It's easy to miss, though, because it looks like an old house. You can get just about any kind of diner-type dishes; clubhouses, burgers, hot sandwiches, etc. However, they're known for their fish and chips. Very generous portions of Haddock or Halibut. I read that some folks enjoyed the cod as well, but I didn't see it on their menu. The staff is local, the food is great and in huge portion. www.restaurantica.com/on/napanee/napanee-fish-chips-plus/23011711/Just off Hwy 401 to Hwy 41 and north for 500 metres and it's on the right. I'll take the Pepsi Challenge with their fish and chips against any restaurant in the Kingston area. Outstanding fish and chips and not that expensive. Cheers.

I'm enjoying this thread, but it'd be helpful to know where (even in terms of city) some of these restaurants are. Maybe we can add another line regarding city or region.
Astoria is in Mississauga, for those wondering. I will check it out next time I'm in Toronto.

One of my favourite Vietnamese places is Ben Thanh. You can order so many different things: Pad Thai, spring rolls, pho (which is really tasty), amongst a whole bunch of other Asian-inspired dishes. It's authentic, and they don't use any MSG. You can get lots of food for under $10.
They have a bunch of locations in Southern Ontario: Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Burlingon, Hamilton and London. I've only been to the ones in Hamilton and London (the one in Hamilton is better; don't know about the other ones). Seriously worth checking out.
Hamilton has a bunch of amazing different restaurants, too. Don't know them all off by hand, but there's Indian Gardens on Main street (close to the university). Some of the dishes are insanely spicy, so be very careful. I have a reasonably high tolerance for spicy foods, but some of their "medium" dishes almost killed me.
The Milestone's in London (Masonville Mall) isn't too bad, but that one's a chain. The decor is kind of trendy, the food is good, but a bit pricey.

It's funny, but I have a different opinion of Ben Thanh. But I'm a bit of a Thai food snob, having lived in Thailand for 6 months and experienced the food straight from the source. There are lots of things Ben Thanh does well, mainly on the Vietnamese side, but I do not recommend the Pad Thai. That being said, I know lots of people who love it. It's just not the real thing. At least not at the Waterloo or Cambridge locations. For truly authentic Thai food the best place I know if is called Thai Sun and it's in uptown Waterloo, Ontario. Restaurant: Thai Sun
Cuisine: Authentic Thai Price per Meal: $10-15 Reservations: recommended on high volume nights (Thurs, Fri, Sat) Meals: Lunch, Dinner Features: Fantastic Pad Thai, and their Red Curry Link : www.thaisun.ca/ Location: Uptown Waterloo, cnr Willis Way and Caroline St.On the same line as Milestones, Moxie's Classic Grill is also a pretty good eat. Never had a bad meal, but it's much the same style of restaurant. Well-presented, excellent service, not inexpensive but fairly ordinary but tasty food. I suppose you could call it "North American fusion." It's a chain as well with locations throughout Ontario. Restaurant: Moxie's Classic Grill
Cuisine: General North American fare Price Per Meal: $15-25 Reservations: Recommended Meals: Lunch, Dinner, Brunch at some locations Link: www.moxies.ca/ Locations: Throughout Ontario, From London to Ottawa to Thunder Bay.

Like I said, I've only been to the two, but the atmosphere is so different in London than in Hamilton. The Pad Thai at the Hamilton location I found to be a lot better than in London.

I'll check it out next time I'm in Hamilton. I agree the atmosphere is different in the various locations. Cambridge is vastly different from Waterloo. I wouldn't be surprised if the food had the same disparity. I was at an Indian restaurant in Hamilton this past summer, but I can't think of the name. I was on a date and the service was atrocious -- they forgot our order and it took 90 minutes to get food -- but the food was excellent. I'll have to try to look it up, see if you've been there.

That doesn't sound like the one I've been to. I've been to this place about a half-dozen times, and the service has been quite good. I'll show you a map and see if this is the place you're referring to, because if you had a really bad experience, it sounds highly uncharacteristic. Don't know if it'll help, but I'll post it anyway. This restaurant was close to a Mr. Sub which was just a few meters away. Does that sound familiar? Indian Gardens Map

Lemon Grass, located at 1292 Garth St, Hamilton. Excellent food, atrocious service. At least our food was free! The Indian place I went was Modern India, and it was quite good too.

Since we're talking about Asian foods, here's a blurb on the Ox Head Restaurant in Kanata. It's located by the theatres in Kanata Centrum Shopping Centre and it's too far from Scotia Bank Place. Here's the map and a few reviews below it. Ox Head Restaurant mapI knew right off the bat that it was going to be the real deal as soon as I saw an Asian cliental eating there. Very, very good Vietnamese menu with plenty of options. I usually go for any soup with egg noodles, lemon grass and the fixin's. Very affordable prices and large portions. ============================================================ There are also several very good Southeast Asian restaurants in Kingston as well. They're usually just 'a hole in the wall' but the food is always tastey and plentiful. Here's one I'm particularly fond of called "The Dong Nai." The Dong NaiIt's on the corner of Princess St and Frontenac; however, as I was saying bofore there are several in the city. Here are a couple of very short reviews.============================================================= I've also been to one of the Pho Restaurants in Calgary (the one closest to General Dynamics). Excellent food and service. Cheers.

BTW, I will never go back to the Mandarin. Nothing but nothing has ever kept me bed ridden......like the food poisining I got from that place. Millions have gone and obviously it's not an epidemic, but one not easily forget the joy of living on the can for three days,

Montreal: Le Latini
Italian cuisine, very good, great service but amazingly pricey. Unless you want to see and be seen among Montreal's VIP crowd, there are better options for you.

Is Queue De Cheval the place where they bring the steaks out for you to choose before cooking them? If so, I ate there once several years ago and it was outstanding. As for the ACC, I don't know of anyplace that quite compares to Queue De Cheval, but Bardi's might be worth a try. Here's their website (the restaurant is just up the street from the ACC): www.bardis.com/home.html

Here's their website (the restaurant is just up the street from the ACC): www.bardis.com/home.htmlPlaces like that still exist? When I worked in the States, there was places like that in NYC. One place in particular was "relatively" inexpensive and served steak by the pound. You went up to the glass freezer, chose your heart attack special and they cooked it to perfection. They had two broilers (hot an hotter then hell) and they certainly knew hot to do a steak. Side dishes a la carte. No one wobbled out of there hungry. They were always out of but they did offer Soylent Green Steaks. Coincidently, there were rumours about vegetarians who stepped into that place.
