From what I read on tsn.ca, it's not the first crash they've had: There have been more than a dozen crashes during Olympic training this week.So sad that there had to be a fatality. His family must be devastated. One can only hope that they were not there watching him make his run, as that is too horrific to even contemplate...

I watched the Opening Ceremony on NBC in California. This is just so sad. His family must be devastated. As the Georgia Flag Bearing team came out they looked so sad I almost cried (women get emotional). I'm glad they decided to stay instead of going home. They can play for him. I like the way the Olympic Committee handled it (IOC President saying he had a sad announcement, minute of silence, flags at half mast). Nodar was born the same year as my oldest Granson -1988. So young and so sad.

I thought CTV showing the video of it was in extremely poor taste. If I should die a tragic death, I hope it won't be seen by billions.

RIP.
The sport itself is a joke. Strap on a pair of skates to a body and see how fast it can hurdle down a ice cage. Why not add the "sport" of one foot flame jumping? Or building jumping? Maybe a maze of razor sharp swinging pendulums?

I could never figure out why it was an Olympic sport, but I guess in Europe, there are a lot of participants (I'd like to actually see that proven myself).
Sometimes I wonder if Olympic sports are picked depending on who is more likely to win them and how many medals they can build into the sport. How else does one explain synchronized swimming and then they take diving and add synchronization into that. What are Canadians good at? Hockey and curling, a total of 4 possible gold medals. You can get more than that out of one swimming style. It couldn't be about money, right?

I don't want to hijack this thread and forget the horror accident. Rest in peace, Nodar. but... Strap on a pair of skates to... the feet of six guys, give everyone a curved slat of wood and let them fight against six other guys for one black rubber disc which is far too small. And to make it more insane, let them do it on an ice surface. Pleeease, sell this funny "sport" in Africa, South America, Latin America, Australia and the most parts of Asia. Good luck! Luge has its origin in 1883 and is a winter fun which most boys and girls in Europe do long before they discover skates or skis. I don't know if there are any mountains in Canada, maybe you can give it a try. Discussing the importance of a certain sport compared to some other is in my opinion a waste of time except you're a member of the IOC.
