Hamilton plays here against the Crunch on December 26th (last night) and on New Year's Eve, December 31st. I got tickets for both games and thought I'd post my observations.
First of all the December 26th game was delayed an hour and a half because the Bulldog's bus was delayed at the border in Buffalo. In this age of high terrorist warnings and it being the day after Christmas, the traffic was bumper to bumper. Of course, something like that certainly throws off players rituals and makes for even more drunk fans.
Both teams seemed out of sync at first but got their legs around the 10 minute mark. The game was not very physical as the Bulldogs did not play Dwyer and the Crunch had a lot of trouble handling their speed.
I was impressed with Alexander Perezhogin. not only did he score both goals in the 2-2 tie, but he was flying all over the ice. He seemed to have the ability to find open ice in the offensive zone. If he puts on a little more muscle and continues to work on his English, I look forward to his NHL debut in a couple of years.
Other impressive players were Tomas Plekanec and Jozef Balej
On the flip side, I was not impressed with Marcel Hossa who seems to float around the ice most of the night not contributing much to either the offense or defense. Sadly, unless I see a completely different player on Wednesday, I doubt we'll see him back on the parent team this year.
Now we come to Ron Hainsey, he played a Jeckyll and Hide game. For the first two periods he made as many mistakes as he made good plays. He was teamed with our buddy, Patrick Traverse, and played the right side. In the third period, they switched sides and Hainsey came alive on his natural left side. Made great outlet passes and looked sharp on both power plays and penalty killing. In fact, his slap shot with less than a minute to go led to the tying goal by Perezhogin.
I sit near the visiting teams bench and was very impressed with the coaches game management. There was only a one momment of confusion during the second period which didn't affect the game outcome. There was some line juggling during the game. Such juggling never bothers me as it does some. I think players should be able to play with anybody on their team.
All in all, a very entertaining game and I am looking forward to the rematch on Wednesday and hope the Bulldogs have better luck at the border, too!
