For the last thirty years, I was using the old Gillette TracII system. At that time, it was a BIG improvement from the double sided razors. Between the Trac ll and now, there was a least several different blades available, to say nothing about all the electric razors. One of the reasons I stayed with that system is because it was dirt cheap on cartridge's and I could get about 15 good shave on it. So Christmas comes around and my wife gets me the Gillette Fusion pack. Imagine my excitement! NOT! So I tried it. The first shave, my face felt like I just had a face lift and they pulled my skin two feet back. Same thing for the second and third shave. Sure, it was a really close shave, but maybe TOO close to the point it was uncomfortable. However, by the fourth shave, it wasn't as "tight" feeling and by the seventh, it felt normal. I was impressed. But wait.... They say Jews and Scots are cheap...err....spendthrifts? They got nothing on me. Heck, I keep the string that comes on the roast beef and use it for shoe laces! Yes, I liked the Fusion system but I hated the price. She paid $48 for the handle and 17 cartridges. Without a handle, it's still over two dollars a cartridge. But wait....there is more to this unsolicited advertisement! About a month went by and I thought that it's about time that I should change the cartridge. Memories of the first "burn in" made me delay the change...and delay it...and delay it....until TWO months passed by. In fact, I landed up with 63 shaves and the catridge was FAR from "dead". The Fusion was at the same shave'ability as the old TracII was after a dozen shaves. So I'm sold on their system. It may be more expensive but it gets at least four times as many shaves as my old system so in the end, the cost is comparable. The shave on the first several shaves is so close that it's uncomfortable but the next fifty or so are pretty good and NO burn. One side note, I shave in the shower so my face is under HOT water and lots of soap five minutes before I start shaving. That's my experience so I highly recommend the Fusion system. On the other hand, I haven't tried a new system in 30 years so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. Soooo..... What system/shaver/cartridge do you guys use and how do you find it?

I use my heat vision and a mirror to burn the hair off my face - just like Superman.

I also use the Fusion "system" but don't find my cartridges last that long. That being said, I don't shave every day so I'm usually shaving a day or two of growth -- a bit tougher on the blade.
HA do you use the one with the battery? I don't and never understood the purpose of it. Also, if you keep an eye out periodically a drug store will have the starter packs on sale for like 3.99 and they come with 2 cartridges.. It actually ends up being cheaper per cartridge than buying the pack of them. Just have to deal with the extra packaging.

I forgot to mention something. Keep your cartridge DRY. After you finish shaving, rinse out with the hottest water possible and then snap the living hell out of it to get as much water as possible out of the steel. It's simple as....water rusts steel and dulls the edge. Before I learned about this, I use to get about ten shavings from the TracII. After, more like 15 or more. If you have a hair dryer handy, on low heat and high air settting for 10-15 second is enough. You don't want to melt the plastic parts. Then make sure you keep it as far away as pissible from the shower and sink (humidity). Of course, the annoying part of this is not to forget it if you shave in the shower.

I already have problems with how close it shaves, if it got any closer, it's going to give me a new face. As for shaving every few days, I find that it takes three times longer to shave then when I do it every day. And yes, the older it gets, the tougher it is. I don't know why that is. It could be the time delay allows smaller hairs to grow and/or the hairs get thicker.

I can't wait to hit puberty so I can use a real razor instead of the plastic blades.
And after puberty . . . adultery!

Nice time saver. so your that guy I saw coming down the highway ramp with a razor in his hand. The next time I see you I'l make a citizen's arrest. BTW - I just use the cheapest disposable razors I can find, usually BIC, & try to get as much mileage as I can from them.

I always used the Trac II. But as well, for the longest time, I felt that I had to use an electric one (heck, I'm hip, I won't use my father's way of getting rid of facial hairs...no sir, not me, I can use power and electricity, bzzzz and all that...) I tried them all, over the years, Braun, Phillips, Remington, various models of each but I kept coming back to the 'ol blade (and kept trying the newest electric model, convinced this new one was gonna bring me up to speed technologically). I eventually gave up trying and spending on electric about 15 years ago as I realized the world is probably split in 2 very distinct categories blades vs electric and you're marked from birth by the razor fairy to use one or the other. Dunno, I never got around to pacing myself down to enjoy spending so much time shaving with electric models (gee, it's friggin long compared to the zip-zap-bang of a blade) to end up with a result that to me was never as smooth and comfy as a blade. So there, I admit defeat, can't use electric... Side me with the geezers... Even worst, I actually enjoy shaving bars and brush... Can't stand that artificial foamy stuff or those gels that come out of their bottle in a string and look at you like a malevolent translucent nuclear worm... I now, I know, I'm hopeless... Stuck in the past and all that...
But...
...when MachIII appeared (what 10 years ago?) It was time to throw the old and embrace the new... I could shave like a cool fighter pilot. Redemption! Use these new technologies, that new breed of intelligent blades, sternly drilled to do their own individual jobs, once that lifts, one that cuts and one that picks up whatever that lazy second blade missed (they DO put the most lazy blades in the middle you know). So I switched. And was also amazed at how long I could go with one. In fact I usually throw them out because I feel somewhat self-conscious that I have been using it for so long... like changing a toothbrush, eventhough you're not really deeply convinced it's "done"... but "what if"...
Didn't switch to Fusion, didn't really see the need as it cost more than MachIII that already lasts me too long... 4 blades, 5 blades, 6 blades, vibrating handle? Whoa there Nelly... I just need a shave, not grind a granit counter top...
The ultimate shaving experience though, remains going to the barber shop and getting the "treatment". Steaming hot towels, warm shaving soap and the straight blade sharp as.., well..., a razor... It's my own version of a treat, like my wife that enjoys going to the beauty salon for the facial, nail buffing and suff... and it only sets me off 12 bucks with tip, I'm outa there in half an hour, all trimmed and groomed, I can go have a pint for 8 bucks, read the sports section waiting for the wife to finish with her hundred bucks makeover. Kewl... But guess who'll pay for dinning out...

I have a fusion. As long as I shave either in the shower or right after the blades are useable for months. It's probably the same for most blades. I figured out a long time ago that if I was going to shave "dry" I'd spend a fortune. One or two shaves and the edge was off enough to make a mess of my face. The vibrating thing is a gimmick. I only turn it on when I accidently hit the button. Makes no difference to me.

I used to use a blade, but after getting married I switched to an electric (I currently use the "fancy, three headed thingy below). I used to find "regular" razors too hard on my face (and hard on the toilet paper as well :-)) so after getting married I figured I didn't need a "close" shave anymore and switched to electric. It took awhile for my face to get used to it but now I would never go back. I don't get as close a shave (and don't need to anymore ) but I get a much more comfortable shave.

I find that by using the blue jean method and by keeping the blade dry one can extend the life of a single razor (in my case the mach3) to up to six months. This technique uses blue jeans akin to the leather strip used by barbers for straight razors..
