Well, the draft is only one month away and the annual Habs development camp is usually shortly thereafter...right? Not this year, according to a well connected LaPresse sports writer who follows this team very closely. I respect his coverage and he does excellent stuff on the prospects as well. According to MA Godin's twitter today, the Habs are going to hold their annual development camp starting on June 2nd and then hold another smaller camp in July for the recent draftees. No formal announcement anywhere to be seen yet, but the Habs usually do not announce camp details and attendees until just before camp opens. twitter.com/MAGodinNo biggie, right? Well, it seems a bit early and a little inefficient to have two camps. You cannot really invite free agents yet as many of them do not turn free agents until June 1st. What, one day's notice is not enough to get a teenager or 21 year old into Montreal? I guess they will reserve the smaller July camp for invitees/try outs. The advantage would be that they get their younger players into a better regime earlier in the off season. With guys like Martin and Boucher now running the teams, they preach conditioning and work ethic. I am guessing that will be stressed a fair bit with the kids when they show up. Another interesting note is that MAG announced this today, long before the result of the Dogs Game 7 was known. Odd to organize a camp for your younger prospects without your farm team's coaching staff being around to help - as they should have been busy next week playing more hockey (if not for the twisted humour of the hockey gods tonight). If the camp is next week, then I (and others ) can keep this thread full of reports. If it is really in July as in the past, then it can be a quiet thread that patiently awaits the kids to show up then. Either way, I do hope to do my part to fill in what I can from afar.

Okay, so this is a go next week. 22 kids. Most of the regular suspects. No Fischer (who has to be signed by August) or lanky crappy goalie Missiaen (who has to be signed by Tuesday) but 6 tryouts invited. Two tryouts intrigue me right now, Blanchard was a top CIS goalie last season with UQTR, and Tanner House is a solid forward who captained his BCHL Penticton Vees in 2006-07 and the NCAA Maine Black Bears this past season. The big "wow" invite is the 25 year old Swiss goalie with a 8-34-0 record in the Swiss league. canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=530432&navid=DL|MTL|home

Interesting tidbit on Fischer. I guess it's becoming clear that he will be set free. This is where people should be tossing in the "wasted pick" and bust comments, unlike the Louis Leblanc thread that has recently resurfaced.

Interesting enough is that 5 players in that camp used to play for the Voltigeurs where Boucher comes from too....

From 1st round pick to not even offered a minor league contract 4 years later? For such a smooth skater to go along with a good frame, you would expect more than 6 points (six!!!) in 39 games in his 4th year of D-1 hockey. I mean, Minnesota was admitedly lousy team this year, but come on! The fact that they don't even offer the kid a contract to play in Hamilton or the ECHL (if nothing else to perpetuate the myth that he still might have a future) means they feel the kid is beyond hope.

They cut 2008 4th round (and puzzling draft pick) 6'8" goalie Jason Missiaen loose, as they had to sign him by June 1st (the CHL deadline). How they picked him with Memorial Cup champ Dustin Tokarski and other better goalies still available was beyond me. They also released Swedish defender and 2007 pick Niclas Torp, but he still has a year left in his SEL contract and was falling into that "won't ever come over" camp anyway.
They still have until August 15th to sign Fischer. If they offer him a contract and he refuses, the Habs get a compensatory 50th overall pick in 2011. If they don't offer him a contract, they watch a recent first rounder walk out the door with no return. The fact they did not sign him once he graduated from U of Minn and at least let him hang around and train with the Dogs was a bit of a puzzle. The fact he is not at this camp is the second big question mark. Not sure what is going on. The kid has some decent size and skills, so it realy makes no sense to not at least offer him an entry level deal and see what he does in the minors. Based on what I have seen, he is worth at least that. Maybe the money negotiations are taking longer, who knows. Maybe they just aren't going to sign him.
For now, no sign of Fischer. He is still on the Habs prospects list on their website unlike Torp and Missiaen!!

I found out today that the Junior Summer Evaluation Camp will be held in St. John's from Aug 4th to the 11th, to recognize the 75th year of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL). Hopefully Louis Leblanc will be invited to it ... at least I'll get to see Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin first hand!!
In November, the Four Nations women's tournament will also be in St. John's.

Day three report from the Habs main site. Try and find something in this article not about Coach Boucher who made his debut in camp today. Guess what question all the media want answers too. Let's hope there is some prospect coverage tomorrow at least, the kids deserve that much out of the media. canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=530893&navid=DL|MTL|home

Well now ... in fact, I won't get to see Taylor Hall. He is skipping the development camp to "concentrate on making the Oilers". Yeah, like there ever was a doubt there .... The proof? Well, if he suits up in Edmonton, the Oilers weren't going to let him play in the WJC ... this just confirms it, because by missing this camp, Taylor Hall is now ineligible to play in the WJC, according to Hockey Canada rules. The only way you can miss the development camp is due to injury or you are already a two-time member of the Canadian team. More reason for me to cheer for Seguin over Hall ...

This isn't actually about the development camp, but it sort of fits in here. We have had various opinions about our prospects and how good they are. This recap, I think, is probably quite accurate and goes into detail about strengths and weaknesses of our prospects. I also like the fact I agree with the summations. For example, I'd be very surprised if Yannick Weber ever makes the Habs, and the article basically states if he doesn't do it with his PP abilities, he'll never do it. I also like the fact the writer has a pretty good opinion of Max Pacioretty and explains why he's taken some hard hits. A good read, though not everyone may agree with the opinions. premiumscouting.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=34%3Amontreal-canadiens&catid=21%3Ateams&Itemid=8
