I understand we are not offering him a contract? Or he was offered and refused? Does anyone know the scoop? I would be shocked to waste a pick like that by not offering a contract. Did we misjudge him that badly?

If we don't offer him a contract, we will receive a compensatory 2nd round pick next draft. I think that reward is enough to justify not signing him.

I'm with Red on this one. It would appear Fischer isn't going to cut it. A second round pick for him, even in a weak draft year, is good compensation for someone that just didn't pan out.

but do we know what the issue is? Is he forgoing the NHL? Does he just not have the skills? if not, where did he go wrong? Has the team commented at all?
Its great that we receive some kind of compensation but this is still a terrible waste. A second round pick might only be good to use to trade up 5 spots in the first! lol

If that ends up being the case, it will be the 50th pick next summer (he was originally drafted in the 20th spot, so it would be the 20th spots in round two). He is only 22, so I sure hope they sign him and get him into a better program in Hamilton and see how he fares.

I want every drafted player to be shoved in the AHL. This "I'm going to x-univeristy yot develop" simply is a waste of development.

Some team may give him a shot...but the Habs would have to be out of their minds not to take the 2nd rounder next year over signing him.

The times I did see him play on TV over the years indicated a serviceable player down the road - at least at the AHL level. He never was the best player on ice as you would expect from a first rounder. He's our A.J. Thelen.
The 2011 second rounder can't be any worse.

Off topic I guess but the guy picked immediately after Fischer was Bob Sanguinetti by the Rangers. He was an offensive force in the OHL & I saw him a fair bit when he played in Brampton. I still remember Bob McKenzie being surprised that the Habs didn't pick him. I guess my point is that Sanguinetti looked like the much better prospect at the time (IMO) but after 2 years in the AHL & 5 NHL games the Rangers have traded him to Carolina.
Of the players picked after him I think Giroux is the best with maybe Foligno or Berglund that would have been better picks.

Neat trick, they offered the contract offer one year after he was drafted knowing that he had no intent to turn pro right away. They can now bank that and fulfil that bona fide provision of the CBA and get the comp pick if he does not sign by August 15th.

I will answer the question with another question. Does the sun set in the west? Not sure if he's a has been or a never been; but it's much too soon to start engraving his name on the Norris Trophy. Too soon to put his name over a stall in the locker room too. Still, I bet he would still look very good playing against high school kids in Minnesota!

It's hardly rocket science, Skilly. You offer him around, no one wants him, you don't sign him, you get an automatic 2nd rounder. It's consolation for screwing up in the first place. Where you can make it work, though, is if it's your first rounder in a really crappy draft, and it looks like he's flaming out, you hope the consolation 2nd rounder is in a strong draft and you'd actually come out ahead. I don't think you can work that into strategy, though, too many variables.

We are quick to point out the failings of Trevor Timmins. I wanted Kopitar, we got Price; yada yada yada. I liked Jiri Hudler. He was available and we didn't take him. I liked Corey Locke and we took him. He's gone now, still..... I liked Kirill Kabanov. We didn't take him and if we didn't move up to get Tinordi, we would have had him with our #2 pick. He is fast, passionate and a real headcase. Assigned by the Islanders to Moncton after he showed up late for the first practice. He left Moncton to be near his agent in Alberta? ? I'll admit I liked Angelo Esposito too. He hasn't found a door that isn't revolving. We are quick to jump on the mistakes by the scouting staff, but it's easier to find fault than to be successful yourself. The old actor vs critic. I do believe that Pouliot will be successful and I'm sure that Subban will be a star. I'd rather see MAB getting beat on defense than O'byrne. They both suck but Bergereon chips in a few goals to make up. Bergereon is useful when the team is behind 2 goals and on the powerplay. O'byrne is useful when the towels in the locker room are on the top shelf or if one of the guys left his cell phone in a girls purse. I hope Kostitsyn gets off to a good start so we can trade him for something of value. Does anybody else think that Toe Blake would get a lot more out of our marginal players than the current coaches do?
