Thanks for another great article. I agree that the Habs need to get back to signing college free agents and undrafted juniors in order to continuing filling the pipeline with prospects.
My approach would be to draft the best player available during the draft and then concentrate on signing the best player available where we have a specific need or lack of depth in the system.
With that in mind, I think Yan Danis would be a good choice for goal. He is 2 years younger than Damphousse and 2 years older than Michaud. And you can never have too much goaltending.
I noticed the lack of defense prospects in your article and I realize those are difficult to judge. But big mobile defensemen are always welcome and it might be an idea to look for those types of players who are still raw but have the physical potential to develop. Brent MacLellan comes to mind but he may have burned his bridges last year.
You have Alex Shinn listed. If that is supposed to be Alex Shinin, I would be hestitant to sign a 180 lb defenseman unless he had unbelievabe power play skills. We already have a smaller Russian defenseman in Korneev. But I would like to hear more about this guy.
In my opinion, the two weakest player-types in the system are big centers and left wingers.
Rene Bourque at 6-2 210, Francois Gagnon at 6-1 200 and Jan Gaudette at 6-1 228 are all big left wingers. They would be among my first choices simply because we seem already have several skilled wingers in the system. We need hard-working, gritty 3rd and 4th line players to support the skilled players already in the system. Skating ability would be very important. Guys like Mike McPhee, Murray Wilson and Bob Gainey are exactly what we need on our bottom two lines.
Among the centers you mentioned, none seem to fit the profile of over 6-0 and over 200 lbs. I know Urquhart and Deveaux are big men but, generally speaking, most centers in the system are smaller, skilled players. When Juneau retires we become even smaller.
It would be interesting to see who might be available from the WHL or the OHL and would fit into the Habs depth chart.

Rene Bourque is a center.
Shinn has been playing some in the RSL, and looked ok in the remax games. It wouldn't cost anything and he could be a late bloomer with good skills but nothing great about him.
Yann Dannis I think will be highly sought after much like Sejna (sp?) from the year before, as he has a very good chance to win the Hoby Baker. I'd sign him in a heartbeat but we'll see
