Just saw an online replay of the UFC Heavyweight Championship fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. Just a few observations:
- I've never seen a fighter take as many shots, heavy shots, and then get up and push his opponent into the cage the way Lesnar did in this fight. By his own admission Lesnar was in a survival mode while Carwin was landing his best shots.
- Carwin's conditioning was terrible. You could tell he was almost totally winded by the time he stepped out for the second round. Lesnar jumped on that and got the quick take-down. From that point the fight was basically over. Lesnar submitted Carwin with a choke hold soon after the two hit the canvas.
- I have a new respect Lesnar-the-fighter. I don't know how anyone could have withstood a beating like that from one of the UFC's most lethal strikers, then get up and win the fight. Credit should be given to his corner as well. They did two things; first, they told Lesnar that he was to take the fight to Carwin if he was to have any chance. Secondly, they also noticed that Carwin was almost completely winded at the start of the second round and Lesnar took full advantage of it.
Cheers.

It`s little wonder Carwin was gassed after the first round. He connected with 57 punches on Lesnar (TSN). Before the fight there were questions around whether or not Lesnar could take a decent punch. No questions now.
Apparently, there were opportunities for the referee to stop it; however, he let it go and Lesnar prevailed in the second.
Cheers.

I thought the whole idea of UFC was to kick the snot out of each other until one can't stand no more and that a ref was just there to ask "do you say 'uncle'?"

It was one of the better cards i've seen in quite some time.
As far as the cardio, those big guys don't usually last very long at that pace. The muscles use too much oxygen for them to last. I would imagine if they fight again that you'll see a slower pace.

There's a bit more to it than that, Franko (as you probably already know). The referee is supposed to stop the match if the losing fighter can no longer defend himself. He can also stop the match if he feels the ring doctor has to check out a fighter; cuts and the like. However, I know where you're coming from. I think there were several instances in the title fight where the referee could have stopped it. However, Lesnar was still trying to defend himself at those points. I'll go back to UFC 94. There were some points in the GSP/Penn fight where the referee might have stopped it, but Penn continued to move and he at least was trying to defend himself. After the fight Penn admitted that he didn't remember anything past the 2nd round. Finally, it was his brother who threw in the towel at the end of the 4th round. Penn actually thanked his brother for that. Could the referee have stopped those two fights? Yes, but in either case both fighters looked like they were actually defending themselves. Worked out for Lesnar anyway. He got his second wind in the 2nd and won the fight on his grappling skills. Penn? Well, it was hard for the referee to call that one. Penn was still defending himself even at the end of the 4th. Cheers.

I watched the fight on-line. The fight should have been stopped when Carwin used Lesnar head for a punching bag. But it wasn't. Lesnar got up and ten minutes later he was still groggy from the head shots. Anyone want to bet that he lost at least 10 more points of his umm.....challanged IQ?

Lesnar openly admits that fighting was/is what he was always good at. He did very well as a collegiate wrestler and went onto the WWE. He turned down a very lucrative contract with the WWE to fight with the UFC. He may/may not have been injured in the fight, but what are the long-term affects? Cheers.
