It's interesting that the Canadiens, a team once known as the Flying Frenchmen, repeatedly departed from that image in their draft selections over a long stretch during the regimes of Serge Savard and Réjean Houle. It led them deeper into the desert instead of to the nearest oasis.

Looking at it in hindsight, I still wonder why there was such an obsession with size over skating and skill at a time when the Oilers and Pittsburgh were flying. Brent Bilodeau, Lindsay Vallis, Terry Ryan...yikes. The only one who made it was Turner Stevenson. Serge Savard was a terrific skater in his time so you would have thought skating would have been an important factor. You can't blame Andre Boudrias and Carol Vadnais for all of this. They did draft Koivu in the first round in '93 much to everyone's surprise. Does anyone remember who was the amateur scout for Western Canada at the time? Is he now working for the Leafs? (kidding)
Cheers,

I personally think that THN's future watch overhypes players drafted in last years draft. Kari Lehtonen and Ryan Miller are the only player not taken in last years draft rated in the top 10. It will be interesting to see how THN's rankings pan out.
