VANCOUVER - Actor Randy Quaid claimed Thursday that there is a "malignant tumour of star whackers in Hollywood" out to ruin his career.
The embattled actor's bid for refugee status at the Immigration and Refugee Board was postponed to Nov. 8.
"I am being embezzled from by this monstrous ring of accountants, estate planners and lawyers who are mercilessly slandering me and trying to kill my career and, I believe, murder me in order to gain control of my royalties," Quaid said in a prepared statement outside the IRB. "I wish to return to only one thing: work."
Quaid claimed he and his wife Evi are victims of a 20-year conspiracy. He blamed bankers, studio executives, former financial and legal advisers and even his brother Dennis Quaid for their legal troubles.
"Unfortunately my brother Dennis has made matters worse by buying a house from (Lloyd Braun, Randy's ex-lawyer) with money he embezzled from me," Quaid said. "I recently discovered, much to my surprise, that Dennis is on the deed of my Santa Barbara property."
Quaid claimed eight actors he worked with died "mysteriously." He said friends Heath Ledger, Chris Penn and David Carradine, were "whacked" and that Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Mel Gibson "are being played to get at their money."
Coroners dismissed homicide in the deaths of Ledger, Penn and Carradine. Spears, Lohan and Gibson have documented drug and alcohol addictions. The couple's ex-private detective Becky Altringer told QMI that the the conspiracy theory is false. Altringer said the only one who poses Randy or Evi Quaid danger is Evi Quaid.
"We are not criminals nor are we fugitives from justice, nor are we crazy," he said. "We are simply artists and filmmakers who are being racketeered on."
Quaid denied defrauding an innkeeper or trespassing on property in California, but did not answer questions.
Randy Quaid, 60, and Evi Quaid, 47, posted $500,000 bonds with Santa Barbara County Court and are expected to appear there Tuesday for a criminal arraignment on charges they vandalized a house they once owned.
"Should the Quaids fail to appear on that date the bonds would be forfeited and new bench warrants issued for their arrest," District Attorney Lee Carter told QMI.
The couple was arrested Oct. 21 in Vancouver and held by Canada Border Services Agency until Wednesday because they missed an Oct. 18 court hearing in Santa Barbara. Randy Quaid was freed Wednesday after posting a $10,000 bond. Evi Quaid was released outright when IRB agreed she could qualify for Canadian citizenship based on her father's birth in Canada.
The couple's Vancouver lawyer Catherine Sas refused to say whether the Quaids would be present for the Nov. 2 hearing in Santa Barbara. She said they would attend if they are "legally obliged" but they would first "strategize" their next move.
Sas admitted a return to Santa Barbara may jeopardize Quaid's refugee claim, but he may instead seek permanent residency status or a work permit in Canada.
