Smartphone abilities....spreadsheet? WiFi?

I have to renew my plan so I was thinking of getting a smartphone but without a data plan. For those who have a smart phone, I have a few questions....
1. The main reason I want it is to have the ability to use spreadsheets. I know they are available for Android but are they usable?
2. How fast are the WiFi downloads? For example, when you log onto this site, how long does it take to download? Are the passwords secure? The last thing I need is for someone to get access to my e-mail or even the HabsRus passwords.
BTW, I'm thinking of getting the Acer Liquid E.
