To Duck: Beauchemin
To Toronto: Lupul, Gardiner (prospect) and a conditional pick in 2013....
Looks like Burke is already starting to fix is own mistakes....
Rumours also say that Versteeg is available.....

Kind of surprised Leafs got that much for Beauchmin. Veteran defensemen must be overvalued at this deadline. Somebody like Spacek would fetch double that.

He's coming off a serious back injury & infection & appears to be struggling. Still, 3 pieces for Beauchemin is decent.

Lupul certainly has bounced around.

Going by that trade...if we could get a Rivet type return for one of Spacek, Hamrlik or Gill is it best to take it?

I know that Spacek doesn't get much love on this board, but he does lead the Habs in +/- for what that is worth.

Burke's been after Lupul all year but was trying to get the Ducks to take Kaberle. The Ducks were looking for a veteran Dman to mentor Fowler, not sure if Beauchemin's a good choice but the Leafs win this deal imo.

It always amazes me how much more a guy will fetch when he has a year left on his contract compared to an impending FA (i.e. Beauchemin vs Wiz).

For sure, Gardiner is a pretty decent prospect. A mid-first round pick just a couple of years ago. The way people were talking I half expected Toronto just to get a late round pick for Beauchmin.
Right now, we could get the King's ransom for Spacek

Lupul has 2 more years left at 4.25 per & is scoring at a 40 point pace. He's 2 seasons removed from his last good season - then at Philly.

Interesting, and straight forward, comments from Steve Ludzig tonight on OTR. Of Beauchemin, he said, "He has three speeds: slow, slower, slowest." Ludzig was critical of the skating of Francois, Komisarek, and Phaneuf .... and he's right.

Bob McKenzie saying it is a seller's market for defensemen at this deadline, with more teams than norm looking for defense help. If we could get a Rivet type return for Spacek would you make trade? Spacek everybody's favorite whipping boy, now the chance to get awesome return on him. Could move Weber up to his minutes and trade for a physical defenseman or bring up a Henry as 7th d-man. Henry be valuable against teams like Bruins in playoffs.

As a team that should be making the playoffs, and an outside shot at home ice in the first round, we can't afford to remove defenders with experience.
Spacek has largely been solid since moving back to the left. He's a plus player. And, he'll be relied on to help check the other team's best.
The only way I move Spacek during the seasons is if it's for a clear upgrade.
