Hey folks,
For my upcoming trip to Hab Mecca, I'm looking for a couple of good restaurant recommendations, places I wouldn't be able to go to at home. Also, my better half wants to try really good poutine (so cliche, but whatever), so if there is one specific place we should hit up for that, please mention it.
She also wants to know where the good shopping areas are, we're staying at the Delta on University, not too far from the Bell Centre, so the closer to there, the better.
Thanks in advance!

For poutine La Banquise is considered the go to place. The best options for restaurants near your hotel are Pullman, Brasserie T, and F Bar. If you can provide some guidance regarding your price points and what style you are looking I could direct you further. Something that is typically Montreal and great QPR is Au Cinquieme Peche, but you should reserve ahead.
Shopping is mostly on Ste-Catherines (University and westwards until the Ogilvy store) and Sherbrooke (centred around Holt Renfrew) streets, In old Montreal one can find some edgier design oriented stores.

Roggy, I'd help you out if I could but just don't know the downtown area all that well to be honest. La Cage Aux Sports is easy to find from the Bell Centre and if you want to go to Chez Parée ...
Never mind buds.
Cheers.

I will be taking in a game at the end of the month. We usually stay at the Sheraton only because we get an insiders deal. The Delta is pretty good and less expensive. If you like Ribs, Baton Rouge is nearby the Bell Centre. If you want a more upscale dining experience, Gibby's in Old Montreal is fantastic. For some great Montreal smoked meat, Dunn's Famous diner on Metcalfe is fab. Great 50's diner feel and the food and shakes and desserts are to die for. You need a big appetite for sure.

I think Dunn's has been closed for a few years. It was a great place to see and eat. Fairmont bagel Factory on St. Viateur and Schwartz's on the Main (St. laurent Blvd.) are not to be missed. Spruce beer anyone?

A friend of mine told me about Gibby's. You have to get there early or you might miss the beginning of the game. The portions are apparently out of this world. Cheers.

The original 50's era diner at the corner of de Maissoneuve has indeed been closed for quite a while, but after a business reorganization and a name change (adding famous) they reopened a new diner nearby south of Ste-Catherines.

Wouldn't be a trip to Montreal without a smoked meat sandwich. No, I don't mean a trip to Super Sexe! I'm trying to remember the name of the place we went to in 2008. Was downtown. Schwartz's maybe. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Spruce beer anyone? LOL - I thought I was the only person that drank spruce beer. I love the stuff. It's impossible to find out side Quebec. The best description of the flavor I heard was from a friend who hated it - he said it was like sucking on a pine needle.

Just to add a few more thoughts. To grab a quick meal before the game I would recommend Café Griffintown ( griffintowncafe.com/ 1378 Notre-Dame Ouest). The food is delicious and inventive, not too too expensive (menu, with prices, is online), and it's close to the Bell Centre (about a 10-minute walk). The atmosphere is very warm, with brick walls, high ceilings, friendly people. Instead of Gibby's (which while in a gorgeous historic location has unremarkable overpriced food in a somewhat kitchy setting waitresses in 17th centurt garb etc...) I would recommend suggest you try Au Pied de Cochon www.restaurantaupieddecochon.ca/index_e.html which is about the same price point and is a true temple to all things meaty. Here the servings are truly enormous.

Le Boucan is a fine place but at 1.5 km from the Bell Centre is more than 5 min. away. Either by foot or taxi as traffic in that area is horrendous before a game.

...good suggestion HABSurd, Au Pied de Cohon is quite the place. Kind of a Quebec/French Bistro fusion thing. They serve "upscale" poutine, with french fries in duck fat and foie gras! Reasonable prices for the quality but you have to be the kind that likes to experiment.

Like "...hey, let's kill a deer with a pocket knife and cook its testicles in a frying pan in the back of my pickup..." ;D

I'm heading to Montreal Thursday to go see the Washington game on Saturday... What a woman I got, quite the surprise!. We are staying at the Residence Inn on Rue Peel. We are not renting a car, so any suggestions on things to do and places to eat would be awesome. My first ever HABS game, ... I'm all giddy!

Hey Reaper, I will be at the same game. You are easily within walking distance to the Bell Center and the underground mall can be accessed from several places on St. Catherine street with loads of shopping and food available. Great if the weather is bad. If it is nice walk down St. Catherine and there is a 50 style diner called Nickles that has great food and breakfast.

The budget all falls on the boss, aka my financier, aka my wife ...lol ... but thats pretty flexible for a trip I'll probably never make again. Culinary preferences? Now that's tricky. My wife is the experimenter, who likes to try lots of new things and I pretty much stick to your standard stuff ... but do get dragged along for the experiments. Every once in awhile I actually like it too .. LOL

My wife is the experimenter, who likes to try lots of new things and I pretty much stick to your standard stuff ... but do get dragged along for the experiments. Every once in awhile I actually like it too .. LOL Well, there are places I could recommend like those monuments to meat: Schwartz's smoked meat deli (http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/) or Pied de Cochon (http://www.restaurantaupieddecochon.ca/), but I will stick closer to your hotel. Ferreira Cafe (http://www.ferreiracafe.com) is one of the finest dining experiences in Montreal with seafood being their speciality. It is not a cheap experience though. Also close by and a less pricey option is Decca 77 (www.decca77.com) which might be described as fine dining with a good QPR. More casual fair can be found at Dominion Square Tavern (www.dominiontavern.com) which is more bistro style. Certainly a step down food wise from the other options but the cocktail list is killer. If you are willing to walk a bit further, say 10 to 15 min. by foot, you might wish to try Brasserie T! (http://brasserie-t.com/) the offshoot of the Toqué that features excellent high end versions of classic french bistro. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous you might wish to try Foodlab on the 3rd floor of the SAT (http://www.sat.qc.ca/post.php?id=7&post_id=2220&lang=en) which offers high end cuisine at ridiculous prices and is the best bargain by far in Montreal. Finally, if it is Habs sightings you want, I would suggest Kaizen (http://www.70sushi.com/site/home.asp) (Subban and Eller are regulars) which being in the vicinity of the old forum would be a taxi ride away from your location. The omakase is amazing as is the wine list but you do need to remember that hockey players are millionaires. Hope this helps.

My wife took me there today. And who should be sitting there waiting for with a big "Happy Birthday" as I entered ....... All my friends! They all made the trip, completely fooled me, and I found out we are actually going to the Megadeth concert tonight and BOTH games this weekend. Oh and the Montreal smoked meat sandwich at Dunns is excellent! The ice village is pretty amazing too ... Loved the Habs room.

and if the Habs win both games this weekend the noise will put Megadeath to shame.
