Based on the how old are you thread we are a fairly "experienced" group of people so I thought I pass on an incident that I witnessed and was involved in. I was playing hockey a while ago and a teammate had a heart attack. Fortunately he is alive and well but WE WERE NOT PREPARED. ARE YOU? This is even more important considering that some of us likely play hockey in masters or oldtimers leagues and some of our teammates are over 60. Anyways, here are some questions to ask yourselves:
Do you have a cell phone on your bench to call 911? Do you know the address of your rink? Many 911 operators are located out of town. Do you have a 1st aid kit on your bench? Is it in good working order? (e.g. aspirin, something to deal with severed arteries from skate blades, etc...) Does your rink have an AED? does anybody on your team know how to use it? (many but not all have voice prompts) is it working? (i.e. batteries) is it located where you can reach it?
Hopefully you'll never have to deal with a situation like this but if you do make sure you're prepared. It could be you having the health issue afterall. Having things on site but locked in referee's or janitor's rooms isn't good enough. These items need to be accessible to prevent the loss of critical time and the ability to attend to a teammate in need.
