Since election madness has flooded the country lately, I've notice the price of gasoline has risen sharply the last few days. This was a given since there was going to be a 1% tax put on fuel here in Quebec, but it is now 137.4/L where I live. I honestly don't know how much higher gas can go before the average Canadian can not afford to pay it. I'm really scared for this summer. When the price was $150 a barrel our gas was selling around the price it is today. Todays market is ONLY at $100 a barrel. As prices rise in the summer, people and companies are going to be trouble. Is there another recession in store for the world?

today in Ottawa it was $1.267, tomorrow it will be $1.252 here’s an article that tries to explain things: apart from increased taxes in places like Ontario, Quebec, BC and New Brunswick, the reality is refiners in eastern Canada fetch a full 17 to 20 cents a litre to convert crude into transportation fuel, where the cost of refining is more like 3-5 cents per litre, tops. More alarmingly, is the reality that we are now more reliant to foreign imports than at any time in the past. . . . After 30 years the oil industry has dismantled the energy security plan of the 70’s and 80’s in favour of paying world price for fuel. The problem is we are paying an extra 15 % above world prices and there is a real threat that because we don’t know the actual energy inventory picture in Canada (supply/demand) as the US and Europe does I look at tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com when I need gas. it's pretty accurate. if it's going up I'll fill at night; if it's going down I wait until the next morning/ still pretty pathetic, though, that we are an oil producing nation and pay so much. stupid GST/Federal Excise Tax/Provincial Excise Tax/. at least I don't pay a carbon tax, a bus/transit tax, or an extra PST.

$119.9 here in Salmon Arm. It's two cents less 15 minutes south in the hamlet of Enderby, but when you get to Vernon, it's up to $1.24.9. Then $127.9 in Kelowna. And if you want to gas up in Vancouver, with the transit tax on top of the carbon tax we pay throughout BC, it's $1.35 or something like that.
And if you have to use premium fuel.......well, you can probably afford it, right HA?

Over twenty years ago, I read an oil trade publication article where a oil company CEO complained about the lack of "proper returns" from refineries and how that was due to too much capacity. He also complained that independent distributers hurt the bottom line. What do we have now? Barely enough refining capacity, huge profits per liter and few independents to promote any competition.
If I remember an article like that, why can't journalist find them? Or politicians with their brilliant staffs? They can find minute particles of dirt in the competitors underwear but they can't find any incriminating evidence of collusion? Could it be the barrels of taxes they collect...to spend and buy votes?
We need a real revolution in politics and competition oversight. Uncorrupteble a-holes who would scorch earth anyone found to be colluding. Directly or indirectly. Hello oil companies, telcoms, etc.

132.8/L in St. John's (where I work). 130.2 in CBS (where I live - yes, not only does the sun always shine in CBS, but gas is cheaper too). Of course I try to only fill up on Wednesday's and Thursday's now since Ultramar offers 3.5 cents off per litre for card holders on those days, but that's just me.

Ultramar usually has the best prices in town here in Kingston. They were at $1.28 or so as of this morning. Odd, but there are other, smaller towns and villages in the local area outside Kingston that sell it cheaper. Cheers.

Gas prices are regulated here, so it's 132.8 everywhere in St. John's and 130.2 everywhere in CBS. However most of the major retailers try and give you something for coming to them. Irving has a deal with Sobeys where if you buy $50 worth of groceries you can save 1 cent a litre (but the trick is to save a bunch of these coupons and use them all when your car is running on fumes - I've seen people fill up for about 80 cents a litre), Ultramar has their discount days (Wednesday and Thursday - though I get 1.5 off at the pump every day). Esso and North Atlantic have their own points/customer loyalty program. It's funny to see how they try and get an edge in while gas prices are so heavily regulated.
