in the end Rogers and Bell are going to screw you over anyway, HA . . . they "rent" bandwidth to the independents, and will begin metering it if they can have their way with the CRTC

We used TekSavvy for a time while in Ontario (only about a year actually - we were with FCI Broadband for most of our stay, but they were bought out by Rogers) and were quite happy with them. It was a bit pricey for us to set up (they had to put in some new equipment to provide us with the service we wanted) and there were some issues with Bell (we used them as telephone providers too and Bell dragged their heels on providing us with certain amenities - like access to the door buzzer) but their customer service was great and their prices quite reasonable.
As for the metering business - yes, Bell and Rogers will always get their cut (and in fact they may start getting a bigger cut) but in the end, at least in my opinion, it comes down to service. You essentially have Rogers/Cogeco/Shaw infrastructure and you have Bell infrastructure (and in many cases you just have Bell infrastructure) and everything is moving over those lines anyways. Service is the only difference maker. Since moving home I've had nothing but problems with Rogers (part of the reason why I'm anxious for my contract to expire so I can switch to Bell-Aliant - which might not be better but at least can't be worse). It's gotten to the point where I've solved more of their problems providing the service I've paid for than they have. With TekSavvy you can actually speak to a tech on the other end of the line instead of a call centre drone whose skill can widely vary.

it really is hit and miss with service, isn't it? I left Bell because of awful service and have absolutely no problem with Rogers, in fact they have bent over backwards to help me out and have given me more than my share of discounts, too.
otoh, I have a friend who had nothing but hassles from Rogers and in disgust left and went to Bell, where he has had fantastic service and has nothing but rave reviews for them.
and interestingly enough, I can get Rogers for my office but nt Bell -- must be the only place in Canada where that happens.
and even though I hardly use the net, I say "fight metering" [even if -- or especially since -- Bell says "it's all the indies fault].

If you can find some place independent from the major companies, you might hit a better deal. I've only checked out Teksavvy, and they look reasonable. The others you've mentioned, I have no idea. Have you tried punching each company name with "review" next to it in a Google search?

Not sure if they still do.
