Extraordinary night.....all 4 games were on...just caught the final innings....and all were playing out like Hollywood screenplays. Rays come back from 0-7 down to the Yankees...and just after they find out Papelbon blew a one-run lead (having Baltimore down to their last strike)...Longoria wins it with a homer just inside the left foul pole. A career game for him....he also hit a towering 3-run homer in the 8th to make it 7-6.
In the end Boston blows a 9-game lead held on Sept. 2. (Can't say I'm sad to see that.) And the Braves blow it as well....don't know how big their lead was before the Cards went on their tear.

close to the same . . . 8 1/2 Sept 4.
if only the Yankees had crashed and burned in September . . . then it would have been a great month .

I had to chuckle a bit at the Red Sox's collapse.
In the end, the Jays were only about 9 wins from a wild card. That's one win a month. ONE. Their pitching failed them.
All season, I quietly thought about the 92 and 93 teams. If you were to put that team together today, with the players in their primes now, it would cost as much as the Yankees and Red Sox squads. At some point, Rogers is going to have to recognize this publicly, and make a concerted effort.
There's a very strong foundation in Toronto right now. Bautista is no fluke - injuries in the second half slowed him down, but he still hit .300, 43hr, and 100rbi. Any team in the league would take those numbers every year. Throw in his defensive ability, and he's an all star every year. Lawrie looks like a gem. Loewen could be a blue chipper too. There's a decent group of catches in Arencibia and co. The pitching staff is young. They could bounce back next year. I'd hate to see the quality in the starting 9 wasted though.
The only way they make the play offs spending what they are spending is to get moved to the Central division - where they should be.

Yep. 162 games is a long season, but right now it feels like a blip when you realize that you gave away 25 games. I believe I heard they were among the league leaders in come from behind wins too, but still. Can't give away 25 wins.

I think if they get that taken care of they'll get those 9 games or more. Cheers.

With Bautista, Arencibia, Lawrie, Loewen, Lind (though streaky) and hopefully the return of Encarnacion, there are enough bats in the lineup to drive in runs.

The guy in the stands pretty much sums up how the Red Sox are feeling...

I have no favourite team in baseball....but I have some least favourites. Always glad when the Yankees, Red Sox, or Braves bite it. With Atlanta, it's that moronic tomahawk chop-and-chant.
The Braves, knowing the Cards were winning big, had a 3-1 lead over Philly but couldn't hang on. They get the tying run on base in the bottom of the 13th, then hit into a season-ending double play.
And Boston....knowing the Yankees have blown a 7-run lead....and their ace closer can't get it done against lowly Baltimore. The Orioles were ecstatic.
Two improbable huge September collapses and comebacks...coming down to Game 162. When's the last time that happened?

Another 10-beller last night. Game 6, Cards-Rangers.
Down to their last strike in the 9th....Freese bangs a two-run double off the wall to tie it at 7. Hamilton hits a two-run blast to put the Rangers up 9-7 in the top of the 10th. Down to their last strike in the 10th...Berkman knocks in the tying run. Freese then hits the winner to almost straight-away centre field in the 11th.
Texas...THAT close to a title...twice.
If the Cardinals pull this off....what an incredible story.
EDIT: Miracle run complete. What a season if you're a die-hard Cards' fan.

Hated this Series. A team formerly owned by G Bush, versus a team with that cheating scumbag McGwire on it. A lose-lose proposition for me.
At least the Yankees weren't in it.
