He said he would retire at the end of the season....and now the Board of Trustees has fired him. Students swarming the streets and campus in peaceful, but powerful, protest. Article

RE: Peaceful protest. Was just going by the tiny report on TSN or Sportsnet last night. Figures it would have that faction. And I agree. You go to the police when you hear a first-hand account of something like that.

Every so often we have the same crap surfacing in Canada. I have a friend who worked as a child crisis counselor. He told me that the youngest person he had to counsel for being pregnant was 12 years of age. If they really want to get a grip on this then they might want to revisit the age of concent, which currently stands at 14 years of age (includes both sexes). www.ageofconsent.com/canada.htmIt's just plain terrible when we hear about stuff like this. Cheers.

Actually, Dis, that's one of the positive things the Conservatives have done [though not without being rebuked for it: It is now illegal for adults in Canada to have sex with a partner under the age of 16, one of the new provisions of the Tories' violent crime law that came into effect on Thursday.
The Tackling Violent Crime Act raises the legal age of sexual consent in Canada to 16 from 14, the first time it has been raised since 1892.
But the law includes a "close-in-age exception," meaning 14- and 15-year-olds can have sex with someone who is less than five years older.
The Tories said they raised the age, in part, to deal with internet predators. The new law puts Canada's age of consent in line with those in Britain, Australia and most of the United States. May 1, 2008

Another question: Why is the eyewitness to the shower incident still working for Penn State? McQuearyHow can the Penn State Board of Trustees, in good conscience, fire Paterno and not McQueary? McQueary was the eyewitness to an alleged sexual assault. Yet, instead of intervening and stopping the alleged act, or even calling the police, McQueary returned to his desk and called his father. His father encouraged him to come over, and McQueary did, leaving a 10-year-old boy alone with his alleged attacker, Jerry Sandusky.
It wasn't until the next morning that McQueary made the incident known to Paterno.
I just can't fathom what would allow someone to let an incident like that continue. Why in the world did he not intervene? It's not like McQueary was a small guy. He played quarterback for Penn State during the 1990s, and many have described McQueary as a leader, both on and off the field.
So what possessed him to leave a 10-year-old alone in the shower with Sandusky while Sandusky allegedly assaulted him?
As a first-hand witness to the event, why has McQueary's status as the wide receiver coach not changed? Why has he been considered in the eyes of the trustees, at this point, to be any less at-fault than Paterno or Spanier?

He just walks away. All his excuses are a cop out. I just don't know how this loser can look in the mirror every morning. It's mind boggling that he's still on the staff & his presence there is an ugly stain on the school. EDIT: apparently he will not be coaching Saturday; www.nytimes.com/2011/11/11/sports/ncaafootball/mcqueary-wont-coach-in-game-vs-nebraska.html

Must rid the college of anybody who had knowledge and didn't call the police.

The act was dispicable!! Joe Paterno was told what had occurred and he reported it to the Athletic Director and Campus police. Now JoPa is being punished for the negligence of his employer, the University which failed to act upon his report. If the authorities acted correctly JoPa would be 100% innocent. We may never know how much Paterno knew and how certain he was of the accusation. The Act was dispicable. The handling by Penn State was dispicable. Paterno could/should have gone farther, but to be fired after an exemplary 60 year career is unfair. I don't pretend to know exactly who knew what and when and I don't endorse the act and I'd like to see the perpetrator put in a jail cell and forced to share the shower soap with inmates that don't like pedaphiles. I feel sorry for Paterno until I learn of something more damaging than not going further on an allegation that was reported to authorities for investigation.
