Pribyl is recovering from a laceration under his knee, so missed tonight's game. Too bad as I had hoped to see him live. He was wearing an A for his country prior to the injury. Hope he returns before the event is over to at least see him on tv. I will be at the CAN-CZE game tomorrow but doubt he will be any closer to returning. Was looking forward to a four prospect game, but guess that will have to wait until new year's eve.

I'm not a big fan of the running up of the score that they do in this tournament. 7 goals, I count 5 at least by the WHL guys, haven't noticed Beaulieu too much or Bournival, but have noticed hands of Stone and Gallagher But they have to run up the score due to the way they set these tournaments up. Very often, teams end the round robin tied, and the only way to break the tie is goals for/goals against differential.

These are junior hockey players, I'm quite sure there is another way, head to head, least goals against? To watch a team like Russian, USA or Canada try to destroy a team physically and on the scoreboard for 60 minutes is ridiculous and it's why I don't follow the world juniors like I used to. Some of these teams don't even deserve to be in the tournament, their best player wouldn't make the tryout camps of the US or Canada. I doubt the coaches like it either.

Tinordi got the player of the game award for the U.S. in a 4-1 loss to Finland.
The Finns got great goaltending, their skaters played a lot better than against Canada and seemed quite alert, and I thought they had some luck as well; 27 shots against the U.S. 39.
I'd say the Americans can be had but could be dangerous.

We always get their best effort, so no easy games against them. They also have a pretty good junior development system as well. Cheers.

Watched some of the US/Finland game today. Tinordi has good wheels for big man. Chance he will be something special. Not a star but an important part to a good team. Watson be a good pickup if Habs are sellers at trade deadline. Has good wheels, big, not nifty hands but good enough to be 20-25 goal scorer in NHL someday. A Cole type

Canada 5, Czech Republic 0, 28 December: Bournival had a 2nd assist on Connolly's goal at 18:11 of the 2nd period. Gallagher and Beaulieu did not figure in the scoring. See stats.iihf.com/Hydra/270/Index.html

Canada 10, Denmark 2 on December 29th
According to a poster on HF, Bournival was out with the flu, and Beaulieu replaced him on the 4th line. I don't know how much defence Beaulieu played as I only saw the last minute of the game. Beaulieu did not figure in the scoring.
Gallagher scored a shorthanded goal at 16:59 of the third period, giving him 2 goals and 1 assist for the series.

Beaulieu didn't really play any defence last night, outside of the PP, that I recall. He's really been a 7th D. When he gets a regular shift it's with Oleksiak.

It really was a nothing game. The IIHF has to revisit the tournament structure. Latvia and Denmark are two clubs that are getting hammered by everyone, and that's not good, for anyone. Heck, Beaulieu could have played goal and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Important game for both the US and Czechs coming up in an hour. The loser of this game will have two losses, and that is one step closer to the relegation round.
The game also features two Hab prospects, as Tinordi and Pribyl go head to head. The young Czech forward is still recovering from that laceration in his leg, as it sure looks like it impacts his skating and mobility.
The game is on the main TSN network.

Pribyl gets an assist on the Czech goal. 1-1 after one, with the Czechs taking 11 mins of penalties, and will start the second with 2 of those still to kill off.
With Pribyl's point, all five prospects now have at least one point. He took a hit and made a nice pass to free up his linemate. He hasn't had many shifts due to the 9 mins of PK time for the Czechs.
Edit: Pribyl missed an empty net, so he is well on his way to being a Hab lol. He was on the ice for 4 of the 5 Czech goals.
USA now needs Denmark to beat Finland or the Americans are off to the relegation round. Canada just clinched the group without playing.

Finns up 3-0 over the Danes in the first period.
Looks as if it'll be a mean-nothing Can-USA game tomorrow night. American team trying for a moral victory....but that's about it.

Detroit prospect Mrazek is well on his way to being the goalie of the tournament. He's a bit scrambly, and got lucky in the first a few times, but he's definitely athletic.

Pribyl and Team Czech Republic will be up against Finland in the early TSN game today. Playoff positioning is on the line as both have punched their ticket to the next round.
Four prospects will be on display on the late game in the CAN-USA game. It may no longer have the same drama, but I still expect a good game and a huge 50-50 pot! It is Canada against the States after all. Hope it stays clean.
The Russia vs Sweden late game on TSN2 may be the best hockey game of the day (and yes I include the Habs Panthers in that population).

Beaulieau just took a puck in the face, ouch. Don't know how it didn't cut him. Inside of his mouth is bleeding and he's got a good welt coming. Went back to the room.
3-2

Game got interesting in the third. Canada's biggest issue may be that it's something of a one line team. As long as Huberdeau and Stone keep producing things will be fine. Gallagher is involved, creating chances, but he doesn't seem to have much chemistry with his even strength linemates.

Did you hear Milbury in the Hot Stove last night? Hot StoveMaclean: Has there been any fallout that you've heard about Team USA's awful performance at the World Jrs?
Milbury: Ah...no. I mean...ah....it was just...not a good year for Team USA....and as you know, it's not as big a deal as it is here in Canada. Team USA is sort of an afterthought at the World Jr.I bet it was a big deal when they beat Canada for the gold in 2010. An afterthought? I bet the US hockey program likes hearing that. Milbury delivered a textbook example of sour grapes.

Canada 3, USA 2 on December 31st:
Beaulieu, Bournival, and Gallagher had no points, but Gallagher was named the player of the game for Canada..
I was interested to hear a couple of comments that Tinordi had been the best US player over the series.

Not just me. Bob McKenzie's been very impressed by him. Not that Bob's a professional scout, but he does have decent hockey judgment.

Yeah that was Ray Ferraro that said that, I only got to see him play twice but loved what I saw, think a Hall Gill that can really skate and hit. Man with him and Emelin (hopefully) dressed on the blue in 2 seasons look out, keep your head up Letang!

Watched the Czech game last night. Not sure if Pribyl played. Hard to judge what type of player he can be as I didn't see much of him. He was listed on their roster, but I did not see him play a shift either (for the second straight game). It has to be tough for these young players who come over to showcase their talents only to get hurt early on in the event. His injury must have happened in their last two pre-tourney games (or in practice). Anyway, what little I saw of him (two games - one live) you can see his vision and skill, but it was hard to assess his overall skating ability as you could see he was holding back and not going full out. He doesn't seem to initiate a lot of physical play, but he also did not shy away from contact. In the US game, he lured Forbert over and took the hit to send his mates on a two on one that ended up in the back of the net. As with most kids that just turned 19, he likely has to add some beef and strength to make the jump to the next level, but that will come with time in the gym and age. He did play on the wing, so did not get to see what he can do at centre. He also played the point on the second PP. Overall very hard to assess, because I have not seen him play without his injury so cannot tell what impact it had on my very limited viewing of him in this event.

He really does have nice mobility for a 6'7" player and he plays a pretty solid game one on one. Once he fills out he should not be all that much fun to play against. He got an assist today in the USA's blowout of Latvia. What also impressed me about him was leadership stuff that folks likely would not have seen on TV. Before the games, he was the first guy down the tunnel and he stood and encouraged his mates as they skated onto the ice. Similarly, at the end of the game, he greeted each and every one of his teammates as they left the ice.

Canada 3, USA 2 on December 31st: Beaulieu, Bournival, and Gallagher had no points, but Gallagher was named the player of the game for Canada.. My biggest take-away from watching three of Gallagher's games live is just how he leaves it all on the ice every shift. He is almost always sucking air as he ends his shifts heading back to the bench. His conditioning is reportedly very good, no doubt helped by having a dad who is his club's team strength and conditioning coach. I would say that he likely needs to gain a step and some quickness to be able to compete at a higher level. He sure hustles out there, but just needs to convert that into a bit more efficient skating stride. They can teach that kind of thing. Willingness to compete hard every shift tends to be much harder to coach/instill. He sure seems to be a favourite interview subject for TSN, as they seem to be quite taken by his up-beat attitude and constant smile.

Am watching the game and am amazed at the Russian's luck so far. They get a PP when one of their own players high sticks a teammate and Canada gets the penalty. Then they bounce in a lucky goal off one of our own guys who takes out the goalie trying to backcheck. Real crap because they've had nothing otherwise.
