I thought it was good but not great. It'll be interesting to see if it has any impact in the US Presidential election given that it's about class warfare, which the Republicans like to accuse Obama of fostering.

I didn't see any politics in it but I guess one can see whatever one wants in whatever one sees.

actually, Cranky, politics runs through it . . . class wars and dictatorships at the fore overtly, and all sots of other fun and "games" throughout -- at least from the author's perspective . . . power hungry leaders and suck-ups, diversions from reality [SQUIRREL -- er, FIGHT].
really, it seems like The Running Man updated

It's beyond pathetic that we are now turning to class warfare as social prism and discussion. Are we really that gullible to allow the village idiot in the White House and his useful idiots define the discussion of our collective concious? When is a science fiction movie just a science fiction movie?

If Obama's the village idiot, what do you call those guys trying to run against him, like Perry who can't remember 3 things he's supposed to remember. "Uhhhh.....let out the dog, take out the garbage and....what was that third thing? Dang the wife's gonna be mad."

They also want to be Commander in Chief village idiots. It's starting to be an American tradition.

Certainly seems that way, HA. How can somebody like Sarah Palin even get close to a presidential ticket?
They're all just figureheads anyway.

I haven't seen it, but I always enjoy the Big Screen.
So, it's worth a look then?
Cheers.

I read the book in two days before going to see it last night ... thought the book wasn't written that well. But after seeing the movie, it sheds new light on the book. The book is better.

book was written for a crowd younger than you and I, Skilly. and is indeed much better. nuances missed on screen -- but hard to put them all in with the time constraints.

I had forgotten your reference, Franko. The first thing I thought of was The Running Man (TRM), but while it was similar, TRM didn't have kids slaughtering other kids. In this context I found the movie to be brutal, but not as graphic as it potentially could have been. In fact, I'd say in some ways TRM was bit more graphic than The Hunger Games (THG). The plot: After squashing rebellions from the "District States", the "Capital State" kept the "District States" in line by organizing teen-aged-gladiatorial games (that are conducted in different surroundings; forests, cities reduced to rubble, etc) to which each District had to contribute one boy and one girl between the ages of 13 and 19 years of age. This also serves as a reminder to the "Districts" as to who was calling the shots. The comparison to TRM starts here, I guess, but I found it a lot better a movie than TRM. However, these "games" are televised not only in the Capital, but in the Districts as well. I also thought the use of hand-held cameras did a lot to capture "the reality of the situation" as well as the emotional side of the movie too. This technique reminded me of another movie. "Bloody Sunday" was shot exclusively with hand-held cameras and it really changed the perspective to both of these movies for me. While "THG" wasn't completely shot with hand-held cameras, the camera work in general I thought was excellent. In some ways "THG" reminded me of some previous films that focused on the spectacular pomp and pageantry that was once ancient Rome, only better. Don't want to get too much into the plot, but it's comparable to a futuristic reality TV show, whereas TRM was flogged a game show. You'll see why if and when you see the movie. In summary, I really enjoyed this movie. It's shot well, acted well and the storyline is different, which is what I like in newer movies. As HA said, "three thumbs Up." Absolutely, yes. Dis

Reading the book now, Skilly. I've never been a fast reader, but I seem to be going through the book quickly. An easier read than others me thinks. I can see why it would make for a great young persons' book. Wouldn't be all that bad a book to do a high school assignment on. I remember doing assignments on "The Black Donnellys" and "Titanic". This book wouldn't be too bad a choice, IMHO. Cheers.
