Apparently he was signed by the Flyers for two years after playing five games for Hamilton last year

In essence it is a short-term contract (10 games is the norm), transitioning from amateur status (typically junior or collegiate). PTO's are professional try-out contracts for those already in the pro ranks (like Geoff Peters initial deal with the Amerks/Sabres). An ATO does count toward professional status if a player plays games--like Curtis Brown or Wayne Primeau debuting in the final game of '94-95 season. If they do not come to an agreement this summer by June 1st on a longer term deal, he'll be a UFA.
