We'll know how good he is in a few years. There's a lot to be hopeful about, though. He has a rocket for a wrist shot, and that's something I wasn't expecting. That goal in the replays against Kingston was as good as many slap shots.

In the one game I saw him play in Guelph, he rifled a wrister wide of the net, but it was the hardest, quickest shot of the night.

So, which prospect best put his turkey dinner behind him and came out flying since Christmas?
A couple have actually. The Bulldogs Gabriel Dumont had a career night last night getting a hat trick and two assists. In true 2012-13 Dogs fashion though, Dumont and the Dogs fired blanks tonight and were shutout.
Tim Bozon seems to be okay right now without suspended Team Canada forward JC Lipon, one of his normal line mates. Two nights ago he had a two goal game, and tonight he already has a hat trick and one helper in a crazy 9-5 game in VanCity that still has five to play in the third.

Timmy B's latest game - one goal and two assists against Vancouver on Wednesday. His fourth straight multi point game. He is now in fifth for WHL scoring one point behind JC Lipon who still has a Bronze medal to fight for tomorrow. www.blazerhockey.com/video/index/id/1357233852

With all the hockey world refocusing its attention on the pending NHL season start, I will ensure that some attention on this board still stays on our key prospects.
A few of the kids will be on TV in the near future, so this is a bit of a heads up in case you have some interest in seeing some of the kids on national TV.
Friday, January 11th (Sportsnet) - Saskatoon (Dietz, Thrower)
Sunday, January 20th (the Score) - U of North Dakota (Kristo, MacMillan)
Sunday, January 27th (the Score) - U of Michigan (Bennett) vs U of Western Michigan (Cichy)
Sunday, February 3rd (the Score) - U of Michigan (Bennett)
Of course the annual CHL Top Prospects game is on Sportsnet on Wednesday, January 16th and should show almost all of the top rated CHL based 2013 eligible prospects playing head to head. There are bound to be a few possible Hab picks in there somehow with all those nice juicy picks we have in next June's draft. This is no ordinary All Star game, as these kids come to play.
For those Shaw subscribers out west, they will be showing a game of interest on Friday, February 1st (Shaw TV) - Kamloops (Bozon)
I will provide some just in time reminders just before these games.

A couple of Habs prospects on TV tonight!!
The Saskatoon duo of Dietz (#44) and Thrower (#47) will be on national TV tonight hosting the Red Deer Rebels. The game is on the Sportsnet channels and starts at 8:00 pm ET. Sportsnet also has a feature series on the Memorial Cup host Saskatoon Blades that will air in the hour before the game. I think the second episode actually had a bit on Breezer's visit to see the boys (he actually went on the ice and helped with part of a defenseman practice - go figure). Not sure which episode in playing tonight, but it does give a little insight to the workings of a CHL franchise.

I have been following the series NWT and it appears that they (Blades) don't have that great of team for a memorial cup host. Coach Molleken is very frustrated with their inconsistency and lack of effort on some nights. They go on streaks of winning 4 or 5 in a row and then lose 5 in a row. Not very good at home either. That is not a good sign. Interesting show to watch. I did see the episode with Breezer on it. I must say he looked very impressive and was very good at instructing the D. He was skating faster than most of the Blades - lol. Dietz was very impressed with him.

Danny Kristo had a four point night last night, with two goals and two assists. He now has a seven game goal scoring streak, so the kid is bulging the twine! My next top three prospect list should be posted shortly, and he will be on it! Danny is #7 in white. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyItlMRhrMsJust for good measure, our other prospect at North Dakota, Mark MacMillan, scored a beauty on Friday night. Have a boo. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBetD8u_bdw

Another month has passed, so how are the prospects doing? Who's hot? Well, I seem to favour offensively talented forwards this month.
1. Danny Kristo, RW, U of North Dakota (NCAA) - The 22 year old Minnesotan is definitely on a goal scoring tear right now with an active 7 game scoring streak going. He has moved into a tie for 3rd overall in NCAA scoring and second overall for goals scored. Danny is also the top career scorer for active NCAA players. He has 30 points in his 20 games so far this season, good for an impressive 1.50 ppg clip and he has been a huge part of North Dakota's offense and success this season. Much was made about his controversial move to return for his fourth and final year of college hockey, but he seems to be making the most of it. I am sure they are already drafting his entry level contract for the summer.
2. Alex Galchenyuk, C/W, Oshawa (OHL) - The 18 year old had a nice WJC debut for the gold medal winning USA team, as he managed 8 points in 7 games on a line with Barber and Kuraly, two players who play a very north-south game without a ton of offensive creativity. In many regards, that was the style of play that Coach Housley wanted all but his top line to play, and you cannot argue with results - they have gold medals around their necks to show for it. Alex's return home to Sarnia was short lived as he likely just had time to do some laundry and head to Montreal for training camp. What a whirlwind month for the 3rd overall pick from last year's draft. Now the debate can turn to whether or not he will stick with the Habs beyond the 5 game tryout that he will no doubt receive.
3. Tim Bozon, LW, Kamloops (WHL) - The 18 year old French-born winger had a decent last month despite losing his linemate JC Lipon to Team Canada. Tim has moved up in the WHL scoring race and now sits 6th, within striking distance of those just ahead of him. He now has 58 points in 44 games and is showing that his point per game pace last season as a rookie in the Dub was not a fluke. Lipon is back and the Blazers added 20 year old Kale Kessy at the deadline so they are gearing up for a fight for the league championship. I expect Tim will be front and centre along that way.
Honourable Mention: Sebastian Collberg, RW/LW, Frolunda (SEL) - Sebastian is only 18 years old and he already has a gold and silver medal from the World Junior Championships. With next year's event in Malmo, Sweden, he will be a big part of the team that gets to host the event. He ended up with 6 points in 6 games and was only held scoreless in the gold medal game against the USA. He showed off his great shot and some nifty shootout moves, as well as his good offensive instincts against good competition. Since his return to Sweden, he has played his last two games in the SEL with Frolunda although he has been held pointless. Not sure if his return to the SEL is longer term or not, but he is reportedly getting more icetime. Now he just has to follow it up with more SEL points!

Collberg with another goal and assist today. That is 4 goals and one assist in his last three SEL games, so he is finding his mark. Two of those goals were shootout winners which count in stats under IIHF rules and one was a penalty shot, so the kid should have a spot on the Habs just for shootouts alone lol.

I know Tmmins had made that comparison too....we can only hope. Sebastian will turn 19 in a month and he seems to be having a better go of things this go around in the SEL than at the start of the season. This is often the source of debate around European prospects as many of the kids do get elevated to their top men's leagues faster than over here, but the counter is most don't get a lot of ice time. If he keeps producing, he should keep gaining in confidence and getting ice time. I understand his world junior coach will be taking over his SEL team next year. With the juniors being held in Sweden next year, this could also be great for his development before coming over. The Swedish prospect that most don't talk about who should get some pretty serious consideration for a contract this summer is defenseman Magnus Nygren. He is 22 and the Habs drafted him as a 20 year old in the fourth round in 2011. He is an offensive defender who has 22 points in 37 games so far this season in the SEL. The Habs need to sign him this summer or else lose his rights. Because of his age, it will be a shorter entry level deal than the usual three year deal so I fully expect they will try to get him over to the Dogs next season.

Watched last night's game with Cigarviper. He's been following some of the prospects as well and he mentioned Dalton Thrower. He's comparing Thrower to Jordin Tootoo. He can launch them and he's a bit wreckless (this year anyway) as well.
Another good pugilist on his way up through the system.
Cheers.

I had the good fortune to be invited to the Blazers/Raiders game last night, so I had a chance to watch Tim Bozon as well as a trio of guys available in this year's draft and one in next years. The game was delayed 40 minutes because the Blazers were retiring Scott Neidermayer's #28 (the number he wore in juniour). Scott was there, along with his brother Rob and (egads!) Brian Burke. Scott came off as a very classy guy. The usual thanks to his coaches, family, city, fans, parents etc., but he also walked around an upstairs lobby signing just about anything asked of him. My nephew got a Cranbrook Colts jersey autographed by both Scott and Rob. I'd forgotten how good Scott was. Lamoriello should thank his horseshoes that the idiotic San Jose Sharks took Pat Falloon ahead of Neidermayer in 91. It only one him those 3 cups. The Devils weren't too successful after Neidermayer left, and they still had Brodeur. Scott won another cup with Anaheim. Speaking of Anaheim, Burke was also not far away in the Blazers team box. I was tempted to ask him for an autograph of some Leafs memorabilia, but didn't have any on hand (sacrilege if I did have any, I know). I wonder if he would have taken a swing at me?
What? The game? oh yeah the game.
Tim had an almost invisible game. He got two assists but neither one was truly earned. He nearly made one highlight reel play where he was cutting in front of the net, left to right and Colin Smith made a pass to him from behind the net that Bozon had to reach back for a long ways. He corralled it, brought it across, while being checked and forced the goalie into a great save. Other than that, he might as well have been at Starbucks. My nephew, who sees most Blazer games, says he's not as involved as last year and last nights game was evidence. He lost the puck deep in the Raiders zone and didn't put his head down and bust back to recover. Nothing happened, but I would have preferred a different reaction. Four out of ten if you're scoring.
The prospects were Cole Ully, a centre from Kamlooops; Reid Gardner, a forward on the Raiders, Josh Morrisey a dman on the Raiders and Leod Draisaitl of the Raiders, a German kid who played in the WJC for Germany. Ully and Morrisey showed well. Ully is a decent skater with a lot of smarts and good hockey IQ. He's about 5' 11", 170 lbs, so lots of filling out to do. Slightly reminiscent of Doug Gilmour in playing style, but seems a smoother skater. Morrisey is an interesting prospect. Hockeydb has him listed at 6 feet 175 lbs and that seems about right. He has a rocket of a shot and is a really good skater. Good hockey sense as well, but as usual, there's a lot of body building before he has enough strength for the NHL. Draisaitl wasn't noticeable much, but he showed a nice passing touch and he's big, especially for a guy who turned 17 three months ago. Reid Gardner wasn't noticeable and he seemed to have to work hard to get from A to B, so I stopped watching him.

If you have never seen prospect Mike Cichy play, his NCAA team is on the Score right now against Michigan without Mac Bennett, who is injured. A replay of last night's game. Cichy is definitely a fringe prospect.
Edit: Cichy is 25 in white.

Collberg re-upped with his SEL team signing a one year extension with Frolunda for next year. This is good as he is playing better in the Elitesrien now and he will get another year of development with the same organization. His WJC coach Ronnberg will be their new head coach next season, which is an added bonus for Sebastian. Next year will be his last year of eligibility for the WJC and it will be at home.
Then in the summer of 2014, the Habs will get him signed and over to North America as a twenty year old.

Another update on how some of our top prospects are doing, as it has been about a month since my last top three list. I left the two Gally's off due to their residence in Montreal.
1. Danny Kristo, RW, U of North Dakota (NCAA) - Danny's team came off a big sweep this weekend and he was offensively front and centre once again, with a goal and an assist in each game. Danny is now 5th in NCAA scoring, only three points back of the leader, and second in goals. I guess if you are going to stay in school for your final season, you need to have a season like this! Anyway, both Danny and the Sioux are having a good season so here is hoping it goes all the way to the Frozen Four. He should also get a nod as one of the Hobey Baker candidates this season with his really solid season to date. This 22 year old will be looking for his entry level deal this summer, and I expect the Berg will be there to make it happen right away.
2. Magnus Nygren, D, Farjestads (SEL) - Not much is mentioned around here about the 6'1" 191 pound 22 year old Swedish defender, mainly because we drafted him two years ago as an overager who had slipped through without being drafted before. However, Magnus has really put together a solid season and has 24 points in his 42 SEL games. He has a big solid blast from the point, and reports are his defensive game has come a long way. He was recently rewarded for his good play by being named to Sweden's team for a four nations tourney. The Habs will have to make a decision this summer about whether to sign Magnus before losing his rights, but I expect he gets a contract offer. He was interviewed earlier this year and said the Habs Swedish scout is in regular contact and the team is getting more interested in him.
3. Tim Bozon, LW, Kamloops (WHL) - This 18 year old LW just had a nine game points streak snapped last night against Red Deer, but he has already surpassed his points totals from his impressive rookie season last year. As 17 and others will attest from seeing this kid, he is not one to carry a line and dominate play. Instead, he is a good skater with a good shot and offensive instincts who keeps putting up points. Tim still has this season and next to play in juniors, so lots of time yet before he has to worry over signing that entry level deal. For now, hopefully he and the Blazers can continue their solid season. They are now chasing both Portland and Kelowna in the western conference, but they are still in the thick of things.
Honourable Mention: Darren Dietz, D, Saskatoon (WHL) - The interconnected fate of both the Memorial Cup host Blades and 19 year old defender Dietz seem to be turning around. He has been paired with Duncan Siemens on the top D pairing and had an atrocious plus-minus about a month ago as his team was really struggling to get anything going. Well, the Blades seem to be settling down, winning games, and quietly sneaking up the standings. Dietz has seven straight games with a positive plus-minus ranking and has a whopping +15 in those games. He also put up 10 points in those last seven games. He is a solid defender, who is decently mobile and has a good point shot. Dietz will be going to Hamilton next season, but first they have the Memorial Cup to host in early May, so lots of hockey ahead for his young man.

I'm pretty sure the pick the Devils used to get Niedermeyer was from a trade with the Leafs for Tom Kurvers. Lamoriello should also kick himself for lletting Niedermeyer get away as an UFA.
