I'm merely looking for reaction/thoughts here. Sportsnet, as cracked up as it is, has a raft of people on the Habs and Oilers board talking about Smyth to Montreal. I know tha BG isn't "planning" anything major, and I don't expect anything either, but if Smyth is on the block would you make an offer? What would it be?
Hossa and a 2nd from me (maybe a 1st - leaves room to up the ante). If there were talks, you can bet that Lowe would want Zed or Bulis as part/all of the return.

That's one guy I would be willing to get. He fits in well with the team's age and style of play. He also is not a head case like some of the other possibilities mentioned around here.
Edmonton has plenty of forward prospects. Although they do lack a big center (who doesn't), they need defense prospects more than anything. If those Gauthier rumours are true, then that would make Ron Hainsey expendable.
Hainsey for Smythe ... I do that.
Smythe Zednik Bulis Hossa Kastitsyn Lambert
The team would be set on LW (speed, size, grit, youth) for the next 7 to 10 years.
The added bonus of that group is that they would all be interchangeable parts.

I like Ryan Smyth a lot. I don't know what's up with him this year, but to me he's always been a fearless player who brings a lot of intensity to the game. A real heart and soul guy (remember Gretzky held a place on the Olympic roster for Smyth when he was injured).
The Oilers would take a lot of heat for trading Smyth, so the return would need to be tangible. Not just picks, but young cheap players like Markov, Bulis, or Ryder. Gainey isn't about to do a deal like that right now, and in this case I agree with him.

If those Gauthier rumours are true, then that would make Ron Hainsey expendable. Hainsey for Smythe ... I do that. It's true that defence is an area that Edmonton is thin, but I'm extremely hesitant to move Hainsey. Markov has the ability to produce, but isn't. Souray is producing, but will he for the rest of his career? I really think that Hainsey is capable of filling a role between that of Markov and Souray, given time. He's bigger than Andrei, and should learn to be positionally very strong. He also has all the tools to rack up points. I'd hate to give that away. IMO Hainsey is one we have to keep for at least another year. I guess I've always been from the school that thinks a great defensive prospect holds a little more water than an equally great forward prospect. In Hainsey, you have a defenceman with good size, very good skating, and strong PP abilities. Those are hard to come by in one package. IMO, harder to find than a 30g man. I still think the future lies with Souray, Markov, Hainsey, and Komisarek. I'm not ready to move one unless we get a super super player in return. Smyth is a 30g man that hasn't done much more than Zednik has in a far less structured environment. Would you trade Hainsey for Smyth? Yeah, I know Ryan has the heart, and that is an intangible that can't be measured with stats, but the fact is his stats aren't a heck of a lot better than Richard's. Hossa on the other hand might get a chance to play centre, his natural position, in Edmonton. Who knows, that may get his motor running full time. Also, there'd be a far less system oriented style in Edmonton, which makes it easier for young kids. I think that's place he could actually develop (as it appears he can't/won't here). All in all, it's a move I'd consider strongly. However, I'm not interested in moving young defencemen to do it.

I am of the opinion that there is no way Kevin Lowe is going to just up and give Ryan Smyth away. I believe he is a free-agent at the end of this year, and maybe Lowe is looking to move him to protect from getting nothing in return. But why Montreal? I am sure if Smyth is not in the Oilers plans, then others will come a calling, and Montreal is not in a position to get in a bidding war for his services.
Smyth for a first rounder, and a prospect not named Hossa or Hainsey. If Lowe wants more than No deal.

I think Ryan fits in well also,I'd prefer a D prospect and or a forward than giving up high draft picks at this point. Once the CBA shakes out and maybe before the Habs are going to have to go the trade route. You hate to give up a Hainsey,Markov or Komi but to upgrade up front you will eventually have to decide to give one up possibly. As far as forwards the Habs could afford to give up a prospect as we have fairly similar players stock piled. HFTO

I would deal Zednik, Hainsey and another Dman to Edmonton for Smyth and a pick.
Here's why:
Smyth: 3.5 million... Gives everything for his team, leads by exemple, can score hit and the best part....PARKS HIMSELF IN FRONT OF THE NET!
Zednik: 1.9 million.... I am tired of seing this guy float around on the ice and not give solid effort! If he could play like he did vs Boston in the Playoffs then I would not make the deal...But he doesn't.
Hainsey: 1.1 Million.....I'd rather save Komo and Markov

He has been a bit out of synch this year and Torres-Stoll-Dvorak has been the Oil's go-to #1 line of late, but he is coming back strong. One of his two goals last night was parked right in front of the goalie on the PP, battling with Pronger only to tip in a blast from the point (calling all Chad's, you should be doing this every night). Ryan also took a stick off the beak, got all patched up, and was back at it with his funky new bandage and red badge of courage. The problem is, I just can't see Edmonton letting this guy go. He is the heart and soul of a very young team. If they did trade him, it would cost us. But, boy, would he be good in a Habs uniform.

That's the same problem that I see too. Ryan Smyth is the face of the Edmonton Oilers. He is probably the most popular Oiler and to top it all off he's an Alberta boy as well. If the Oilers traded him for guys like Zednik and Hainsey, the fans and media would be all over Lowe for letting such a fan favourite go for a one-time 30-goal scorer and a prospect. I don't think that the Oilers are as thin on the blueline as we might think. As a group I think that the Oilers D is quite competent. They still have "young veterans" like Jason Smith and Steve Staios, 24-year-old Eric Brewer, 22-year-old Alexei Semenov (6'6", 235lbs) and Woywitka, a terrific prospect whom they got in the Comrie deal. I think the Smyth to Montreal suggestion on the Sportsnet website is just wishful thinking by some Hab fan somewhere. He's a hockey player's hockey player and I would love it if he came to Montreal, but I just don't see it happening.

All the more reason to think that any deal involving Smythe would be expensive. He's the Oilers' marketing hero right now. The name that rings out to me is Jason Smith. Why the Leafs ever gave up on this guy is beyond me. This is a guy I'd love to have in Montreal. Why? Right now we have a youngster named Mike Komisarek who everyone thinks is going to be THE blueline hitter of the future. Maybe so, but who do we have to properly show him the physical game? As I was saying, I'd love to have Smith in Montreal, but, like Smythe, it would be expensive. I hope it's just not speculation. Apperantly, Jacques Demers has also said the rumour is true. And if so, Gainey is going after the right players. Cheers.

The name that rings out to me is Jason Smith. Why the Leafs ever gave up on this guy is beyond me. And Jason Smith was only 25 years old at the time of the deal. To me, it is without a doubt, one of the Leafs' most bone-headed moves in recent memory. They didn't even recieve a strong return for him either. Two draft picks (a 4th and a 2nd) is all it took. And what has been one of the Leafs' shortcomings over the past few years? Hard-rock defenceman... go figure. From the games and especially the playoff games that I have seen Jason Smith play, he has got to be one of the toughest players in the entire league. An absolute warrior who truly defines the expression "tough as nails." He would be the perfect mentor for a player like Komisarek, but he's the anchor of the Oilers D and he's their captain so unfortunately for us, I don't see him being moved. Wow! I didn't know Jacques Demers reported it as well. Demers and Bob McKenzie are the only two names that I trust when it comes to trade rumours. Hopefully Bo can make it happen.

Sheldon Souray. Dis, I think that Sheldon brings not only a solid (and physical) presence on D but finally we can count on a guy with some leadership back there. I believe the last real leader on D we had was Weinrich, now Sheldon has finally came home... Of course, early in his carreer, Sheldon has been groomed by a certain Larry Robinson... Not a bad model for leadership. In some odd twisted way, Sheldon received the torch from the failing hands of Larry and ended up in Montreal...

Apparently the Smyth to Habs rumor was discussed for a good two minutes on sportsnet...
Two ways to look at this:
1- Snowball effect from the ottawa sun rumor (picked up by Demers, now picked up by sportsnet) 2- triangulation: same rumor coming from different sources, which mean it's darn serious.

I saw that too Yeti. I think #2 is the more likely. Sportsnet News doesn't often spew rumours on air. That's left to Hockey Central. If it's making the airwaves on the news show, it's more than fair to assume that there has at least been some serious discussion.

This rumor is the most exiting rumor since Montreal trying to sign the "Washed Up?" Brett Hull!!!
If Smyth gets traded to Montreal I am buying the NEW #94 Jersey and he will instantly be my favorite hab since Mike Mcphee! I mean Mats Naslund... ;D

I would tread carefully on this one. Ryan Smyth is the type of player that will require a serious "give up" on our end. He's only 27 and Kevin Lowe will be looking to top shelf talent in return. Hossa and Hainsey won't cut it, IMO. Neither is impressing all that much this year. My guess is that the Oilers would be looking at a pool of players that includes the likes of Markov, Bulis, Ryder, Higgins, Perezhogin, and Komisarek. Still interested?
I still think a guy like Jeff O'Neill is a better short-medium term solution. He wouldn't be as costly to acquire, IMO, and would add some much needed size, toughness, and scoring from the RW position. Other than his character, I don't know if Smyth really solves our problems. He's not a big guy, but he plays a reckless style that can lead to injuries. I would be worried about cashing in prospects for a player who although is a warrior, does not have a huge offensive ceiling, is injury prone, and does not address our size/toughness issues.

Ryan Smyth is the type of player we "NEED" I would give 1 of these guys to the OIl for sure to get Smyth.
How many power forwards have we had in the last 10 years that gives EVERYTHING for the team and loves the game like Smyth does?

I was talking to an Oilers fan today .... when I mentioned that I read that Smyth might be going to Montreal for Hainsey or Hossa or maybe both .... he replied "And what else?" Then I saw the little shaping of a tear falling from his eye.
But yes I would give any two prospects to Edmonton for Ryan Smyth in a heart beat. All the ones listed can't possibly be high scoring machines. Some will be busts .... I am not sold on Higgins yet. I am betting Lowe wants Ryder. Ryder and a pick for Smyth? Lowe may want more ......
As for O'Neill. I'd rather Smyth. You say O'Neill won't be as costly to acquire .... well that depends on your defintion of cost.
O'Neill = supposed hothead / floater = 3.7 Million Smyth = known leader / quality guy = 3.5 Million
Smyth has a year left on his contract ... I am not sure about O'Neill ..... both will require prospects or roster talent to acquire.

Would Yanic give up #94 for Ryan??? Maybe there is a three way deal involving Yanic. But I have a feeling that we will need Yanic in the playoffs .... I would keep him unless the trade is bust without him included.
