Tickets to catch Habs’ brightest rookies just $7.00 (08/27/2004) The Montreal public will have one of its first opportunities to see top prospect Andrei Kostitsyn in action from Sept. 11 through 14, when the Canadiens' rookies face off against those from the Maple Leafs, Panthers, and Senators. MONTREAL – Kostitsyn. Chipchura. Lapierre. Danis. Die-hard Canadiens fans know the names already, while it’s a safe bet the rest of the faithful will soon. The quartet is but a part of the talent pool at the heart of the organization’s future, and for four days in September, Montrealers will have the chance to see that future in person when the team hosts a four-team rookie tournament in Pierrefonds - www.canadiens.com/eng/news/redirect.cfm?sectionID=habsNewsDetails.cfm&newsItemID=3915

Most AHLers won't be there. Toronto's team will have players who suited up for the Baby Leafs last year. Then there is Danis (although he only played 2 games). Pity he can't play.

Well the roster for the tournament and camp will be out this week. From what I understand the tournament will be the guys from the development camp. Although I originally preferred Schremp over Chipchura, I now know Gainey is the GM and I'm not. Kyle is a better pick than Robbie. I've converted. If Kostitsyn plays in all three games with the same team, it will constitute half a season for him. Seriously, I think he can do well enough to get a real shot at making the Hab's this year!

I look forward to the game reports and the write-ups that we are able to get from first hand attendees from the HabsRus community. It was great reading all those Develop Camp reports from afar, especially for those of us who live just outside the reasonable commuting distance to the West Island. As we did with the Develop Camp, I look forward to a report thread and promise to help the Clown in mining all sorts of goodies from those other sites where folks are prone to post their thoughts on the camp/games as well. The one things I am looking forward to is hearing about how these guys do in real game situations, as they just did drills and no scrimages at the Develop Camp, but the camp leading up to the Rookie Tourney should be a more game simulation focussed I would imagine.

Did a little playing around with the roster and came up with this lineup. It is very strong down the middle, on the RW, on RD and in net. Not too bad on LW and a bit weak on LD. Still looks strong enough to pummel the opposition later this month!!
Lambert-Chipchura-Kostitsyn D. Stewart-Locke-Milroy Bonneau-Urquhart-Ferland G. Stewart-Lapierre-Labelle
(Glode,Petit - spares)
Sanford-Archer Caron-Flood Martin-Jolette
(Dulac-Lemelin spare)
Danis Halak Lacasse

Initially I was surprised and a little dismayed at seeing Milroy's name on the list. Then again, he had a pretty nondescript season. I was glad that the Habs selected him. He seemed to have a good combination of skill and grit. I hope the extra work helps him have a strong season with the Dogs. The invitees are unknown to me, except for Derrick Martin who attended last year's camp and of course Petit and Labelle who were at the developement camp in July. The remaining 4 all come from teams in the Q - Caron, Glode and Sanford from Moncton and Jolette from Shawinigan. 4 of the 7 try-outs are D-men - Caron, Jolette, Martin and Sanford. Two of these guys hint at a useful combination of offenive skill and grit - Jolette, 65 games, 14-47-61, 138 PIM and Sanford, 61 games, 16-37-53, 126 PIM. Joliette has good size at 6'1 218lbs. Sanford seems like a Bouillon clone with the type of play his numbers and his 5'9 195lb physique indicate. Caron was ranked 107th among NA skaters at mid-term by the CSB and ended up placing 85th in the final ranking. Was drafted 261st (first in the 9th round) by Anaheim in the 2002 entry draft. Sanford was a member of Canada's National Under 18 team in 2002.

Rookie Camp Day 1 report courtesy Mark Couzi at FLR:
Well it was pretty basic today...a lot of transition drills and puck moving drills...the interesting thing is that there were lines set up already...unfortunately no names or numbers on the jerseys...only tiny numbers on the helmets...so with a roster sheet and some damn good vision these were the lines according to jersey color.
G.Stewart Locke Kostitsyn Bonneau Chipchura Milroy D.Stewart Urquhart Ferland Lambert Lapierre Labelle
On defence it was nice to see some serious size even if most are on tryout...Archer (6'4), Dulac-Lemelin (6'4), Flood (6'1), (TRYOUT) Caron (6'3), Jolette (6'1)...unfortunately O'Byrne and his 6'4 physique wasn't there...NCAA rules...Korpikari (6'3) wasn't there either.
The Locke line looks pretty awesome, they move the puck really well...this Gregory Stewart (not to be mixed with D.Stewart/Crosby linemate) is not bad at all, he's a big guy at about 6'2 and pretty quick with good hands...his stats last year in Peterborough don't look great but with the size and good speed he should be better than those stats indicate.
Milroy stood out on the Chipchura line...on top of having good size and speed he's very nifty with the puck...it should be interesting to see if he can turn things around in Hamilton this year....personally, I think he'll have a good year...he looks ready to turn things around.
You gotta like the middle...at one point all four centers did their own drills consisting of working around the net while the 9 to 10 wingers did their own drills with Dmen consisting of puck movement using the wings...
Anyways...I liked what I saw from the centers...we know what Locke is all about...but seeing Chipchura,Urquhart and Lapierre combine size with skill was nice...we may still be lacking that big #1 center but with this group we seem pretty solid up the middle...there's also a couple of good ones in Hamilton
I got a hold of the Panthers roster and I have to be honest that they may win this tourney...they have a good group of prospects including Anthony Stewart and Danny Rousin...they also have two Dmen at 6'6...saw Mike Keenan admiring all the Habs pictures on the walls...
I think the Leafs and Sens practice tomorrow...
Unfortunately I'm not going to the Habs prospects first game because it falls on Saturday night so I obviously chose to watch the Canada/Czech game...
I overheard Trvor Timmins talking to Reeaud Lavoie (RDS) they said Locke should be signed pretty soon.
*
Chipchura and Kostitsyn looked like they did at the dev camp...it will be much more interesting to see them in game action...especially Kost who looks like that kid in class who's just not challenged anymore by the usual work load...you could tell he holds back because he just pops these awesome plays every so often out of the blue and you just wonder why he doesn't always do it considering the opportunities are always there.
As for Locke...Savard said something interesting in comparing him to St.Louis...he just doesn't have his wheels YET...he's gotta work on his speeed...but he has progressed a lot compared to this time last year...Timmins said this kid has a killer attitude that can take him far.

Sounds as though Locke might compete for the #2 center spot before long, but at that point Gainey will have to decide what to do with all the small centers on the roster (Koivu, Ribeiro, Plekanec, Locke). The competition will be intensified if Chipchura, Urquhart, and Lapierre also do well. And then there's Bonk. By now it's clear that Higgins is destined for left wing.

If Locke is signed, won't Hamilton have too many centers?
Plekanec Dusablon Morgan Urquhart Locke
And that's not counting any prospects from the other organization (Dallas?). Someone will have to sit, change position, or get demoted to a lesser league.

I think that Locke and Urquhart will be #2 and #3 respectively.

Up to Locke to seize his opportunity Friday September 10 2004 - MONTREAL (CP) - Corey Locke will have a great opportunity to show off his talent at the Rookie Tournament which begins Saturday at the Pierrefonds Sportplexe. Locke will center Andreï Kostitsyn and Gregory Stewart in the match which will pit the best Canadiens prospects against those of the Senators (19h30). "Locke is a good playmaker", explains Bulldogs coach Doug Jarvis. "He has an excellent feel for offensive play. As for Kostitsyn, he's a natural-born scorer. He has a hell of a shot." Locke was the fifth choice of the Canadiens and the 113th player claimed at the 2003 draft. During the last two seasons he dominated the OHL leader board, even earning the title of player of the year for 2002-2003. His handicap has always been his small size. The Toronto native measures only five feet nine inches and 170 pounds. His acceleration is not very explosive either. But he has talent. "I am a little heavier than last year and I added muscle. I also feel faster. I improved my skating." Without a contractLocke hopes to play in Hamilton this season. But he is still without a contract even though negotiations have continued for a few days. "I must reach an agreement before September 15th, if not I will have to return to junior", explains the Ottawa 67s forward. According to Andre Savard, an agreement should be reached in a few days. "Our intention is to sign him to a contract. We don't want to see him as a 20 year junior", indicated Savard on Friday. If he were to return to the 67s, Locke could form one of the best lines in Canadian junior hockey with the Czechs Lucas Kaspar and Jacub Petruzalek. Kaspar was the Sharks' first choice in the last draft. "It's time to move on to a higher level", he says. "I want to play as a professional. On the other hand, I won't be too disappointed to find myself in Ottawa. The team will be favoured to win the Memorial Cup." Locke expects a highly competitive tournament. "The tournament will be very competitive. The players will want to impress and the games will be played with intensity." Briefs Doug Jarvis had composed the following lines in practice: Stewart-Locke-Kostitsyn, Bonneau-Chipchura-Milroy, Lambert-Lapierre-Labelle; and Petit-Glode-Ferland. Forwards Cory Urquhart (back) and Danny Stewart (abdomen) are slightly injured and will not be able to face the Senators. Defenseman Jonathan Jolette of the Shawinigan Cataracts will not be dressed. Jolette, who is from Evain, is in camp on a try-out. Defensemen Andrew Archer, François Caron, Alex Dulac-Lemelin, Mark Flood, Derick Martin and James Sanford will play. Yann Danis will be in nets. Doug Jarvis indicated that Jaroslav Halak will play in the second game, Sunday, and Loïc Lacasse in the third, Monday. - www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/162359.html

Happy to hear that Millroy is doing fine. As I already said it a few times, I had (have) really high hopes on him when we drafted him, as he looked like as strong winger with good scoring touch and leadership. We will see. It seems that Hamilton will have a lot of players, if you add the Star's players ; I hope he can (and the other young players - Locke, Urquhart, Kostytsin, ...) overcome that.

Talented Kostitsyn fights culture shock[/size] Teenager still relies on translator. Right winger is emerging as best forward of this year's crop after only two practices JOHN MEAGHER The Gazette
Saturday, September 11, 2004
Ridding himself of epileptic seizures was only the first hurdle Andrei Kostitsyn cleared in his bid to some day join the Montreal Canadiens. Overcoming culture shock is the next big test for the 19-year-old right winger from Belarus with the heavy eyelids and even heavier shot. Kostitsyn is arguably the most talented prospect at the Canadiens rookie camp in Pierrefonds, but the stoic teenager speaks neither English nor francais. His comprehension of English is apparently improving, but he still relies on a translator to conduct media interviews. So far, he's content to let his Synergy stick do the talking, which can leave a goalie muttering in two languages about one-piece technology.
Perhaps the best news for Kostitsyn, a Red Army product whom the Habs drafted a lofty 10th overall in 2003, is that he hasn't had an epileptic seizure in months - apparently not since Canadiens physician David Mulder prescribed the proper medication to combat his condition, which a team official described as nocturnal frontal-lobe epilepsy.
"He is fine now, no problems," said translator Nikolai Vakourov, who also serves as the Habs amateur scout in Russia.
Phase II of Kostitsyn's maturation is for him to become more "North Americanized"- on and off the ice.
"He has to get used to the North American game on smaller rinks," said the Habs director of player personnel Trevor Timmins. "He's used to playing on wider Olympic-size ice."
Kostitsyn's crash-course in post-Cold War hockey continues tonight at the NHL rookie tournament at the Sportplexe 4-Glaces Pierrefonds, where the Habs duel the Ottawa Senators at 7:30 p.m. After two relatively spirited practice sessions with the Habs, Kostitsyn is emerging as the best of this year's promising crop of rookie forwards.
"He's a step above everyone," Timmins said. "He already does everything at the pro level." "His passing is very good, but his best asset is his shot. Right now, he has the tools."
The 6-footer is also solid on his skates.
"He's 207 pounds, big and strong," Timmins said. "You think of Russians as thin and wiry. This guy's not. You should see the legs on him."
Timmins has no doubts Kostitsyn will eventually integrate into North American society, and stop blurting out Russian to teammates on the ice.
"He's a good kid," Timmins vouched. "He fits in with the other guys. When he was in hospital getting tested for his epilepsy, the players all went to visit him."
Vakourov scouted Kostitsyn back in Russia and said the kid can play. "He has always played with older guys and scored."
Vakourov is also helping Kostitsyn adapt to life outside his Montreal hotel room.
"Andrei doesn't eat bad food. No beer or smoking, either," Vakourov said.
While Kostitsyn has apparently developed a taste for Chinese food, he has yet to sample the Montreal nightlife.
"He likes the city very much," Vakourov said. "We go walking on streets at night, but we don't go in (bars). We went to the old Forum and he liked the amusement games very much."
Another rookie within earshot suggested Kostitsyn could accelerate his cultural integration by finding a female companion in Montreal.
"He has a girlfriend back in Russia," Vakourov said. "He calls her often." Timmins compared Kostitsyn's situation with Habs draft pick and Russian-league product Alexander Perezhogin.
"You'll remember that Perez-hogin didn't stand out at this rookie tournament last year," Timmins noted. "People were worried, but he went to Hamilton and worked hard. By the end of the season, he was one of the best prospects in the AHL."
Unfortunately for the Habs, Perezhogin was suspended by the AHL for a year for slashing an opponent in the face. Habs assistant GM Andre Savard said yesterday that Perezhogin is expected to play this season in the Russian elite league.

Probably applies to the other teams there too. It would be great to have twenty four 1st or 2nd round picks there, but you'd have to go back twelve years to get that.
