How good the 67's can be could depend on the success of talks between Locke and the Montreal Canadiens. Locke leaves this morning for the NHL rookie tournament being held in Montreal featuring the top prospects of the Canadiens, Senators, Panthers and Maple Leafs. Locke still hasn't agreed on a contract with the Habs, though he said yesterday talks are continuing and he remains hopeful a deal could be finalized sometime early next week. If he can't reach a deal with the Habs, Locke said he will be disappointed, but has no problem returning to play with the 67's this season as an overager. "Obviously you want to sign an NHL contract and move on," he said. "I've done a lot in the OHL, but there's one thing I haven't done and that's win a Memorial Cup. If I'm sent back, that's the first thing on my mind." - slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/Junior/2004/09/08/620503.html

CBA expires midnight tonight, so he must sign by then or else it is back to the Civic Centre for him.

From what fans have said about him, that's where he should be because he didn't shine with the big boys.

From what fans have said about him, that's where he should be because he didn't shine with the big boys. I know it's not an excuse and I don't want to defend him just to cover my own a$$, but he did score two goals in four games, posted good numbers like he always seems to and has always started slow and caught fire in the later half of the season. His game depends on his vision and getting the puck to open teamates and thats hard when you have new linemates. We shouldn't write him off after a rookie tournament where he scored two goals without standing out. I remember a kid named Gretzky who never looked very good but at the end of the night had his name all over the score sheet. Yes, I know, he's no Gretzky.

Great news Mr. Bozo; That makes him the highest paid player on the team, (pound for pound).

Gainey must have seen something the Habs fans who attended the rookie tournament didn't. Their reports on HF suggested another season in the juniors. The question now is which other Habs centers will wind up in Hamilton and which in Long Beach.

Good for Corey, it is the right time for him to see how his phenominal OHL talent translates into the AHL game. If nothing else, this young man is going to work his butt off to make it, from all accounts. I wish him well and I too look forward to seeing all these newbies develop in Hamilton.
That 2003 draft class is looking better and better, even after just over a year (pundits do like the 5 years in which to apply the 20-20 hindsight to eliminate all doubt or uncertainty, so I am clearly out on a limb here!!). We already have three signed to pro contracts just a year after they were drafted (Kostitsyn, Urquhart, Locke). Korpikari and O'Byrne will be refining their big, nasty defensive skillsets in Finland sm-liiga and NCAA respectively, all on the heels good reports from their summer development camps. Halak and Heino-Lindberg seem like promising young goalies, but still early and goalies traditionally take time to develop. Management seems all abuzz about Max Lapierre newfound bulk and his ever-refining agitator abilities. Timmins was quoted yesterday about liking Bing Bang Bonneau as a possible tough guy for years to come. Mark Flood has excellent skating abilities and some offensive upside, much in demand within the Habs organization right now. With a bit of bulk and some more experience, could Hamilton come calling? And Danny Stewart rounds out the class, and is still seen as a long shot.
Not a bad day at the office for Savard and Timmins. If we get a couple of NHL'ers out of that crop, then super...but I predict we will surpass that mark!!

Well their was an article a few weeks ago that said the Habs and Locke's agent were in talks, so I doubt the rookie camp had any impact on Gainey. They know that Locke is done in the OHL. After leading the entire league in scoring the last 2 seasons, he won't learn anything but bad habbits most likely. While he and Urquhart and Lambert still have to make the team, I can't see Locke in the OHL again.

How many Jr. players can see their annual scoring production drop by 33 points from the previous year and still win the scoring championship? Hard work and competitive drive. Reminds me of a kid named Fran Huck who toiled for the Hab's.

It's interesting that the Locke and Ribeiro had very similar seasons statistically in their second last year of junior. Ribeiro 167 points in 69 games and Locke 151 points in 66 games. Both are undersized centres who are less than average skaters but gifted offensively.
Ribeiro was rushed into the NHL as a potential saviour for the franchise while some consider Locke barely a candidate for the ECHL after playing with inferior linemates in his last year in Ottawa.
Ribeiro came with a less than average work ethic (which has since improved) while Locke seems to be ready to do anything to improve his game and his chances at making the NHL.
To me it indicates how much the club has improved. No longer are junior stars being hyped as saviours. They must now earn their stripes.
It also tells me that Ribeiro needs to continue to work at improving his all around game because there are more and more players waiting in the wings trying to take his job.

Surprising isn't it? Now the trick is to see if Locke can keep it up all season long. I did not watched any bulldogs game this year, but my general feeling is that he looks to adapt faster to the stronger play than expected. How nice would it be if he could end up a mid-round steal.
