Announcer likened Kostitsyn's shot release to that of Dan Marino's with a football.

The Bulldogs went downhill after that, losing 3-2 in OT and being outshot 35-23 (29-15 after the 1st period). Judging from the box score they played an undisciplined game, taking 3 unanswered penalties in the 3rd period. Ivanans was booted from the game in the 1st. Ellis was in goal.

Some first hand opinions of the game:
Alberta Hab Fan
Not much of an exciting game. There was a lot of rust out there, which is to be expected from the 1st game of the season.
Guys that impressed me:
-Gavin Morgan. I don't know much about this guy, but he really stood out for me. A tonne of hustle, always in the play, getting his nose dirty. He looked a lot like Koivu out there, especially with #11. Good little skater. -Chris Higgins. GREAT hands. Wow was he working the puck. Excellent stick-handler. Couldn't finish, but I'm sure that will come with time. -Tomas Plekanec. Very smooth skater. Didn't get his nose dirty though.
Guys that disapointed me a bit:
-Andrei Kostitsin. Other than a goal, and a decent 1st period, he was nowhere to be seen the rest of the game. I wasn't overly impressed with him. -The entire D-men, except for Trevor Daly from Dallas. Hainsey wasn't too bad, but made a few bad decisions out there. Decent hussle though. The other ones we all a little shakey in the skating department.
Other notes: Raitis Ivanans threw a vicious checking from behind hit. That was ugly. It sucks, 'cause just before the hit, you could see that Rocky Thompson wanted a piece of him. They were gonna dance. Thompson went after him after the hit, but the tilt last about 2 seconds before they fell to the ice. Ivanans got kicked out like ten minutes in.
Very good crowd on hand for the opener...16, 839 people in attendance.
Jacob Hoggard SUCKS!! This Canadian Idol goof sang the national anthem, and between periods. The boos grew larger every time he started singing.
Ah well, lets hope for a better show tommorow.

I was there too, and Higgins was awesome. He had the dangles going all night, and it is shame that he had a hand in the overtime winner. I never knew Higgins had the hands that he had tonight.
Kostitsyn looked good in the first period, he had some Kovalev-esque rushes started, but he couldnt get around his men. In the limited action he saw, I was fairly satisfied, although there is much left to be desired. The goal was nice, I jumped out of my seat, probably angered some Edmonton fans. But it was worth it.
Dan Ellis was outstanding. He made several keys stops, including a big one in overtime to preserve the point. Hopefully we'll get a look at Danis tomorrow night.

I disagree with the AK review. He didn't get much time but he was your most effective forward when on the ice, the goal and the setup for Locke were insane. He came out behind then net with a guy draped all over him and with one hand on the stick fed it cross crease to Locke who was so surprised he shot it wide.
Honestly he looked a LOT like Kovalev. An awful lot....
I really think you have a winner on your hands there..
Higgins was great too, but AK really stood out for me.
