The Bulldogs had to finalize their roster last night at midnight, so their final cuts and ECHL assignments were made. The good news is big 24 year old winger Akim Aliu who was in camp on a tryout made the club. He had a very good camp and brings size, skill and toughness. It is very worth giving him a shot, we don't have a lot of young guys like him. The team will start with two guys injured: Quailer (ironically from a Tinordi hit in camp) and Thomas. Pretty good depth and better talent than last season. Their actual season opener is still a week away, a home game where they host the lads from the Rock. Nathan Beaulieu left Montreal to come back and play in last night's third and final preseason tilt. He had an assist in Andrighetto's goal, the only one of the game in a 1-0 victory. After the game, he was seen lugging all his gear as he headed back to join the Habs after their big day in Lac Megantic. Once all the Habs D get healthy, they will have to move someone down. I don't think it is a slam dunk anymore that it will be Tinordi! hamiltonbulldogs.com/team/roster/A few interesting roster notes. The team has players from 8 of 10 provinces. Pateryn is the only American born player on the roster. With Aliu born in Nigeria, the team represents three continents! Go Dogs Go!!

Yeah... from what i read... Alui really stood out in their preseason games so far bringing a physical brand of hockey mixed with flashes of decent puck skills. mind you most of their roster was filled with the tryouts so standing out should be taken with a grain of salt. Aliu is an exciting project but I'm not sure if he is even on the Habs radar or simple their to provide the Bulldogs with nastiness. Bulldogs have released a roster so Im guessing they are pretty close to season ready... if this is anywhere close to their final roster they are going to be a tough team(physically) to play against lol www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/team/roster/

Still a pretty young team. We almost have no choice because of the large number of prospects, but our chances of winning are better if there's a sprinkiling of late 20's and early 30's vets on the team...like Alex Henry for example. Tarnasky is one guy who fits the bill and St. Pierre but there are a lot of 1989 and new birthdays in the list.

Tarnasky is one guy who fits the bill and St. Pierre but there are a lot of 1989 and new birthdays in the list. It is a very young team. Average age of just over 23 according to one report. I too was shocked they did not bring a vet in on D, mainly because the D has been so young last season and this. St-Pierre (30) and Tarnasky (29 in Nov) are the grizzled old vets. A number of the guys they signed from outside this season are in that 24 year range. Been around a bit, but haven't yet stuck it anywhere. While they are not vets, they do bring a bit of experience to the table. They may get younger yet! Thomas (21) is still on the IR and should bump a guy like Courtnall or Macenauer out of the lineup. Oh well, this is a more talented lineup than last season. Let us see if they can get out of the AHL basement in both the standings and goals scored...and I expect this group definitely can.

Sportsnet 360 (the old Score channel) will be showing 10 AHL games this winter, including 3 featuring the Hamilton Bulldogs. The televised Dogs games will be on: Sunday, February 9th; Sunday, March 9th; and Sunday, March 16th. hamiltonbulldogs.com/pressbox/news/?article_id=467It's not a lot, but at least it is some games!

After going all last season without naming a captain, the Dogs did name one for this season. Veteran Martin St-Pierre will wear the C, while Greg Pateryn and Gabriel Dumont will wear the A as the two Alternate Captains. The Dogs season opener is tonight. Their D is a bit thinner than expected with both Tinordi and Beaulieu out west with the Habs. Time for the other guys to step up. www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/pressbox/news/?article_id=469

The Dogs finally christened their season this past weekend, getting three of four points from back to back home games. The league actually started a week before, but weird scheduling kept the Dogs sitting until Friday. They rode two shorties on Friday night to beat St. John's 3-2 on Friday night. On Saturday, discipline was their undoing as they took 9 minors and were on the PK way, way too much. They tied it up with 10 seconds to go off the stick of big Akim Aliu, but then lost in the shoot out against a top notch opponent, the defending Calder Cup champs from Grand Rapids. www.allhabs.net/griffins-hand-indisiciplined-bulldogs-first-loss/

NWT, I don't see Morgan Ellis' name in the line-up. Is he hurt?

NWT, I don't see Morgan Ellis' name in the line-up. Is he hurt? Healthy scratch both games. We will see if he gets rotated into the lineup this during this week's games. They are on the road for a pair next Friday and Saturday.

The Dogs beat Rochester in a thriller tonight, after giving up a two goal lead twice. Leblanc was the hero for the second straight game, scoring twice including a beauty backhand in OT. That would be two straight OT winners for him. Tarnasky kept his hot scoring hand going with his fourth goal, Magnus Nygren scored his first AHL with a big blast from the point, and Mayer got the win. Tinordi was playing tonight. Busy three in three weekend for the Dogs. They play in Utica tomorrow night, and then back at home for an afternoon game against the Marlies on Sunday. Edit: His winning goal is right at the start of this video. That was some backhand roof job. m.youtube.com/watch?v=SKjumUlGVxU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DSKjumUlGVxU

Dogs win third in a row, but avoid OT to do it this time. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 40 thanks to goals from tryouts Macenauer and Aliu, and hot hand Leblanc. Utica made it interesting in the third but Tokarski's 31 saves helped secure the win 3-2. Tokarski and Aliu were the first and second stars.
The Dogs are now 4-1-2 and had the bus ride home last night as the face the Marlies this afternoon. This is their third game in just under three days...welcome to the AHL.
The Dogs will have some fresh legs available today as the Habs have sent down Pateryn, Beaulieu and Holland.

20 year old Swiss forward, Sven Andrighetto, who the Habs picked in the third round in June is off to a good start in Hamilton. Yes, he is another of those smaller, skilled guys, but he seems to bring it. theahl.com/andrighetto-working-hard-to-reach-nhl-p188466We still have yet to see 21 year old Christian Thomas in action yet for the Dogs. He is suffering from an abdominal tear and still has not been assigned to the Dogs since training camp. His speed and shot will be a welcome addition.

The Dogs released Akim Aliu today. Too bad. In the one game I saw him play, he showed some good things. The org loses more size and grit.

Canadiens have released Erik Nystrom according to tsn ... www.tsn.ca/nhl/transactions/He had 5 points in 17 games and was a 6th rounder in 2012. He was on a 25 game PTO with Hamilton, so they still have until June 1, 2014 to sign him to his NHL entry level deal. Not sure where he will play now. Best bet is he goes back to Sweden. Edit: He has signed with Zagreb in the KHL.

Could it be about freeing up contracts?

Could it be about freeing up contracts? He was on an AHL try out deal, so did not count against the 50 NHL contract limit. The Dogs can have as many guys as they can afford to AHL deals. I think they were giving him a looksie. The Habs have a number of new contracts kicking In next summer, so NHL contracts will be tighter again then. At least they know more about Nystrom for when they have to make their final decision.

In a very surprising move, the Habs have loaned Magnus Nygren back to his old Swedish league team. Not sure what the reason is, but this is a set back with a promising young offensive defenseman. He is still under contract for this season and next, but not a good sign.
Unlike the younger forward Eric Nystrom who was a late rounder and long shot, Nygren has some real promise. Interesting.
The Swedes are bolting.

Maybe Nygren will be back in a season or two.

Nygren is one of those prospects that seems sneaky good. I read he was among the most polished D prospects we have. I think it speaks to the difficulty some foreign kids have coming over to North America and playing in the minors. It's a grind with the buses, small towns, no friends and family, etc. Emelin decided he could develop just fine by playing at home and waiting for the contract offer from the Habs. Maybe Nygren feels the same way. Is the AHL that much better than the SEL? I hope the Habs don't give up on the guy. He probably was just unhappy in Hamilton and with really no chance of a call up this year, he decided he'd rather play at home.

Maybe rent an apartment somewhere better? Duh, that has to be one of the silliest management errors in a while. Surely he can cook a little or eat out at IKEA.
