Our ECHL affiliate, the Long Beach Ice Dogs (anyone else note a trend here?) finished their pre-season tune up with a perfect 2-0 record, with two wins this past week against the San Diego Gulls. The Dogs play the Gulls this Friday to open the ECHL season. Some of the Habs' prospects figured in the games as Christian Larrivee scored the winning goal and Olivier Michaud was the winning goalie in last Friday's 3-1 victory. The Ice Dogs roster will likely get a boost from Hamilton shortly, as a number of players have been healthy scratches and now that list will increase by one with the addition of Jason Ward to the Bulldogs. Potential players who may see some California sun soon include forwards Cory Urquhart and Benoit Dusablon, and defencemen James Sandford and Derek Martin, all whom have not seen any ice time to date in the AHL early season. The most surprising on this list is AHL vet Dusablon, who may be nursing an injury much like 2003-04 Hamilton regular defenceman JF Cote is, thus keeping him out of the lineup. Hamilton was platooning Michael Lambert and Ben Carpentier as their 11th forward in the lineup this past weekend, so Wardo's addition will likely bump one of them lower in the depth chart. www.icedogs.com/news/?cat=3&id=151

Hopefully they let a kid like Urquhart get some strong playing time in the ECHL if they have no plans to use him. He's shaping up to be a great prospect after last season, but a season in the press box could delay his progress. I'm not too worried though since Savard drools everytime he talks about the kid... I doubt he'll sit back and watch his favourite son ride pine for long.

For those who live is Southern California, it appears as though 20 of the Long Beach Ice Dogs games will be on cable TV. That's good exposure for the Baby-Dogs. hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=109740

Long Beach finished its ECHL opening weekend with a 2-1 record. They beat San Diego and Las Vegas before losing to Bakersfield. Habs' prospect Olivier Michaud was on the bench for the two wins and got his season debut in last night's 5-4 loss, while being at the wrong end of a 41-18 shot game. Habs' prospect Christian Larrivee finished all three games pointless. Marco Rosa, who was a Hamilton Bulldogs' training camp invitee, is leading the way with 4 points already in this early season.

I suppose the Ice Dogs play in the San Andreas Fault Division. Bakersfield really rocks (literally).

HFLA, are you going to any? Might be nice to get updates from a HabsRus observer. I will attempt to take my boys to a couple of games and file a report. I went to a couple of their games last year and I can report that they play in the worst arena I've ever been to. There are a dozen in Montreal better than Long Beach and a dozen rinks in LA better too. THe location on the harbor is great, parking is good, but the ice is makeshift in the middle of a cavernous arena with aluminum stands around it at weird angles. Bush league.

After a long break, the IceDogs played their 4th game on Tuesday and skated to a 1-0 win over Las Vegas. Their record now sits at 3-1. Cory Urquhart made his ECHL debut and was pointless, as was fellow prospect Christian Larrivee. Bulldog tryout Marco Rosa scored yet again, as he seems to be almost all of their offence. Michaud spent yet another game on the pines as backup.

Update from last weekend. The Ice Dogs split two games with Florida to bring their record to 4-2 on the season. The Dogs were heavily outshot both games and goalie Chris Madden continues to play over Olivier Michaud, who has only started in one of the six starts this season (Madden boasts an impressive 1.19 gaa and 4-1 record compared to 5.02 gaa and 0-1 for Michaud).
Christian Larrivee had an assist last Friday to get his first point of the season. He now has played 6 games and has 0g 1a 1pts with a +/- of -1.
Cory Uruqhart found the net for his first professional goal on Saturday night and rounded the night off with a second in the Dogs 4-1 victory. He now has played 3 games and has 2g 0a 2 pts with a +/- of +2.

The goaltender situation almost mirrors the one in Hamilton with Ellis and Danis, except that this time it's the Habs property who's stinking out the joint. Of course, to be fair, Ellis has a far better GAA than 5.02 against stiffer competition.

The Ice Dogs win 2 out of 3 this week/weekend after splitting their games with Alaska this weekend, against a team that features home town boy Scott Gomez of the Devils. Michaud had two of the three starts this week and had a split decision, but at least he received more ice time after only one start in the first 6 games. Ice Dogs now sit with a strong 6-3 record.
Prospect stats to date:
Larrivee 9games 0g 2a 2pts -2(+/-)
Urquhart 6games 2g 2a 4pts +2(+/-)
Michaud 3games 1-2 record 3.00 gaa .913 sv%

Here is an update heading into this weekend's action:
Ice Dogs now sit with a strong 9-5 record.
Prospect stats to date:
Larrivee 11 games 1g 2a 3pts -2(+/-) - he missed some games with a minor injury
Urquhart 11 games 2g 3a 5pts 0(+/-)
Michaud 5 games 1-4 record 3.11 gaa .911 sv% (Chris "Mad Dog" Madden is clearly their #1 guy with 11 gp 8-1-1 record 1.15 gaa .965 sv% - nice numbers)

Icedogs have a tough weekend and lose 3 games this past weekend (Fri-Sat-Sun), including the last one in OT. Their record is 9-7-1 and they are still middle of the ECHL pack.
Here is how our prospects did in those games:
Urquhart: 1g 0a in three games. Larrivee: Still nursing that knee injury so didn't play, but is expected back soon. Michaud: Was in net for all three starts, and all three losses. His record now sits at 1-7 compared to Chris Madden at 8-1-1.

Long Beach lost in an OT shootout on Friday night and lost 5-0 last night to bring their season record to 9-8-2. Larrivee was back from injury on Friday and ends up with an assist during that night's game. Shasby is held pointless on the weekend but was a +2 in their 3-2 shootout loss Friday. Urquhart held pointless in two games. Michaud in net for both losses.

A good weekend for our other minor league affiliate as well, as they win both games this weekend to bring their record to 11-8-2. Habs' prospects played a big role as Olivier Michaud was in net for both wins including a 3-0 shutout yesterday. Larrivee had a goal Friday night and Shasby and Urquhart both had assists. Another "Hab" note is that Long Beach just signed ex-Hab Bill Lindsay this weekend and he scored in his first game with the Baby Dogs.

I always liked Lindsay. A line of Lindsay-Bégin-Ward would be all right by me.

Ice Dogs win third in a row behind the solid tending of Michaud, who also notches his third in a row (are he and Ellis comparing notes or what?). He is taking full advantage of the injury to ex-Bulldog Chris Madden who was stealing the show down in SoCal until his injury.
Ex-Hab Bill Lindsay gets 1g 1a, Shasby has 1a, and Urquhart and Larrivee held of the scoresheet. Ice Dogs beat Fresno who feature Dan Tessier (who didn't Make the Cut) and ex-Bulldog toughie Matt O'Dette (the less talented of the Audette twins, although the much taller at 6'4" or so and much younger).
Ice Dogs play again tonight.

Ice Dogs lost last night in a shoot-out to San Diego. Michaud in net for the SO loss and Shasby had a goal. All other prospects were silent.

Ice Dogs win a close one, 3-2, last night despite being outshot 52-24. Urquhart gets a goal, Shasby scoreless, Chris Madden picks up the win.

Ice Dogs win another last night against defending Kelly Cup champs Idaho. They now move into second place in their division. Urquhart and Shasby both played but were scoreless. Larrivee is still up with the Big Dogs and Michaud rode the pines and admired Chris Madden who was in net for the win. Here is a brief Shasby and Ice Dogs report from oopik at HF: "The Long Beach Ice Dogs are 5-0-1 in their last six games and have jumped up to second place. Shasby has been pretty much the best player on the ice in every game, for both teams, since he arrived. Definately their top D. Runs power plays, penalty kills, and automatically takes the ice against the other teams top lines without the coach even directing it. Positive coaching does make a difference!"Shasby seemed to do the same last year, as he ended up being the top D at Columbus in the ECHL, but just didn't stick it with Hamilton. Likely a good depth guy at the AHL level once NHL hockey resumes and the AHL rosters return to normal. I don't really expect Shasby, like our entire 1999 draft class, to ever see a game in the NHL.

Ice Dogs beat Idaho again 3-2. Shasby with two assists, Michaud backing up Madden, and Urquhart no points. Doggies are now 6-0-1 in last seven. Here are some comments from Cropduster from HF:
Went to the Ice Dogs game last night(Wednesday). First of all it was fun to watch, good to see hockey live again. Urquhart looked great, he looks like he needs to put on some muscle, though. Shasby looked very natural out there for such a young guy. One thing I noticed is that Shasby looked like he plays very clean yet about 3 guys on Idaho were trying to kill him. Especially Lance Galbraith-that guy is quite an ass. Was hoping Lindsay was going to play but he didn't.

Ice Dogs first venture into Canada this season is a success as they win back to back games in Victoria. On Friday night, Olivier Michaud was in net for the 4-3 win with Cory Urquhart adding a goal, and Matt Shasby getting two assists. On Saturday night, Cory Urquhart added another goal in the team's 3-2 win. Chris Madden was in net for that victory.

Another young player on the Ice Dogs is RD Steeve Villeneuve. He played last year in the Q and attended the Montreal rookie camp a couple of years ago. I don't know what his skill level is, but he appears to be bigger than Mark Flood and has shown as much offensive flair in junior.

Little Doggies are now 9-0-1 in their last ten as Michaud gets another win today in Victoria. Neither Urquhart or Shasby get a point in a big 5-1 victory...this team is on a serious tear. Interestingly, they play Victoria five more times this month after meeting them three days in a row this past weekend.

Question: Is Marco Rosa property of the Dallas Stars or did they not offer him a contract and allow him to become a free agent?
He is one of the younger players on the Ice Dogs and is scoring at a nice pace.
