Earlier this weekend, Providence Bruins invited Chris Madden for a professional try-out for their AHL team. Madden has been hot, hot, hot this season for Long Beach, but the good news is that Michaud should get the lion's share of goaltending in his absence as Long Beach currently only has two goalies on the roster. Olivier already played three straight games and wins this weekend (including 44 saves tonight against Division rivals Bakersfield) and we will watch and see what this means for our goalie in the ECHL.

Michaud gets another win Wednesday night as Long Beach beat Vegas 4-3. None of the Habs' lads received any points in the game. Not sure if Lambert made his ECHL debut or not.
Edit: Lambert did play, had no points, but did get 5 shots on net!
Michaud is on a bit of a winning streak of late and his stats are starting to get really respectful. He is now 10th in save % and 13th in gaa for goalies that have played 10 games or more. One of the guys ahead of his is team-mate Chris Madden.

Not a great weekend for the Ice Dogs as they drop two games on Friday (5-0) and Saturday (3-2). Michaud was in net for both losses and Larrivee was the only prospect to pick up any points with his one helper last night.

Watched the game tonight on webcast, good game in a way as Long Beach took an early 3-0 lead but ended up winning it in the shootout. Here's what I wrote at HF,
Ice Dogs win the shootout 1-0. Thanks to Bill Lindsay who had 3 goals plus he won the shootout. Ice Dogs move back into 2nd place and are only 1 pt behind the Aces for 1st and they play tomorrow in what will likely be a very good game. Things got very chippy towards the end. Shasby got elbowed three times and it wasn't till he threw one back did the ref call both of them. But with back to back games both going into overtime when 1st place is on the line as the season doesn't have many more games, you would expect it to get rough.
Here's what I thought of our guys.
Larrivee- played a good game, works hard can play in both ends, although still not using his size again I liked what I saw from him as he was solid the last 2 games I've seen. This was the 7th game I saw, and he seems to have improved as the season has gone on although his numbers are poor, he has size, skates well, good vision as he can move the puck around.
Michaud- first period he wasn't tested but looked confident in net. After the first goal he started to get a little shaky at times. Perhaps his confidence was rattled, as Ice Dogs weren't playing all that great from the 2nd on, and the Aces really woke up and showed a lot of offensive skill. He stopped all 5 shots in the SO, but 2 rolled off the stick and one went over the net. Still he made a big glove save and that helped his team get an additional point in a very close race (as they also battle for 1st overall in the league but are 4 pts out) Overall I think he had a good game, but perhaps he's getting a little tired as well, as I think this was his 6th or so start in a row.
Lambert- I missed his goal but to be honest he didn't very good out there except his speed. He showed some good wheels at times, but also looked a bit lost, out of position, floating a bit, but still seemed to get a regular shift. Perhaps it's taking some time to get used to his new team as this is the first time I've seen him play in the ECHL. I was hoping he would be picked for the SO, as I think his wrist and slap shot are very impressive, bu instead it was Urquhart who got the call.
Urquhart- Not a great night for him either. He got beat several times in the face-off circle, continues to be a problem for him. Still not showing any kind of physical game and was no where to be found when things were getting chippy. Did have some nice offensive plays, as he can move the puck well and also has a very good wrister. If he gets a lot stronger especially upper body, it should really help his game imo. I hope he hits the gym hardcore this summer for his sake, although with his skills he is an asset on the PP.
Shasby- Looked good in the offensive zone, and on the PP but in his own end he continues to struggle. It's been the knock on him, as he's not very strong either which gives him trouble tying up his man in the crease. I like how he jumps right into the offense, even had one go off the post tonight as well as getting an assist on Lindsay's hattrick.
From the Aces, I hate Gomez for playing in the ECHL, as to me personally I just don't agree with it. I think the homer announcers made it much worse as they would not shut up about him and how he's one of the best hockey players in the world. yack I did like the play of both former QMJHLer's Charles Linglet and Olivier Filion. Linglet I had pushed for us to give him a look when he was an overager in the Q but had a bad OA year so he went unsigned. Has some nice hands, made some quaility plays tonight. Filion is small but I also took notice of him when he was on a line with Ferland. Also showed some decent moves and very nice passing skills but not very strong guy (although he ran Bill Lindsay over

The Baby Dogs lost 3-2 in a SO last night, for their third loss in four starts. Not a tailspin, but a mini slump by the standards of their great season so far. Michaud in net for the umpteenth time in a row since the AHL defection of Chris Madden. Larrivee pops one in assisted by both Shasby and Lambert, so some Habs' prospects contribute to the cause. The Ice Dogs play Alaska tonight in a key divisional matchup. They trail the Aces by only 3 points in the standings.

Long Beach lost a tough one last night to Division leading Alaska (of Scott Gomez fame). Michaud was in net for the L. Urquhart and Lambert both scored and Larrivee had a helper.

The Ice Dogs late season skid continues as they drop another one today 4-2, despite outshooting Vegas by a count of 46-14. Michaud has a rough one in net and none of the Habs' prospects end up with points.

The Ice Dogs had a mini 3 game winning streak stopped last night as they lost 2-0 to San Diego. The Dogs had goalie SEBASTIEN CENTOMO assigned by Lowell Loch Monsters of the AHL and he had been in net for the three wins, giving some relief to Michaud. Unfortunately, Olivier's return was last night in the shutout loss. All the prospects have been contributing offensively and Lambert was rewarded with a callup to Hamilton this past week.

Long Beach having a good run this weekend so far. They beat first place Alaska 2-1 on Friday night (no prospects got points and Michaud did not start), and on Saturday night they beat up on lowly Victoria 5-1 (Michaud recorded the win and Shasby had an assist). With 3 regular season games left, the Ice Dogs need one more point to lock up their playoff position. They are in action again on Sunday.

It won't be easy as Fresno is fighting to make the playoffs and are on the outside looking in.

according to echl.com, the Dogs are in already. Idaho in 4th and Fresno in 5th if they win all their remaining games can only tie Long Beach's current point total, so the Ice Dogs must win a tie breaker thus guaranteeing them a spot already. Good news.

Long Beach finishes off a great weekend with a 7-0 whipping of 5th place Fresno. Hab prospects have a good afternoon with Larrivee getting a goal and two helpers, Urquhart with a goal, Shasby with two assists, and Lambert with an assist. Michaud was the backup to Centamo today.

Our other affiliated team is heading into their playoffs on quite a nice roll. The Ice Dogs won their fourth straight and eighth in their last ten with a nice 3-1 win against Fresno lasat night. Michaud was in net for the W and Shasby netted the game winner. Dogs will finish second in their division and sport the 4th best record in the league as they head into action tonight for the last game of ther regular season. Here's hoping they have a nice long playoff run, and this is good news for Michaud, Lambert, Urquhart, Shasby and Larrivee who will all get a good taste of playoff hockey this spring.

With a playoff spot, and in fact second place in their division, already locked up, Long Beach lost a meaningless game in OT last night to round out the regular season with a whopping 95 points in 72 games. That record is in fact the third best in the ECHL, so quite a remarkable season for our ECHL affiliate. Lambert and Urquhart both had two point nights, and Michaud was on the bench watching Centomo in action.
On to the playoffs now....

New coach and all new players, as every single player from last years team is gone. Total overhaul, yet for parts of the season they were 1st overall in the league. No surprise that coach Cameron has gotten a contract extenstion. Idaho is going to be a tough team to beat. They got a solid goalie in Frank Doyle, but the Dogs are strong at home, so home ice should be huge. I don't expect Michaud to play unless Centomo has a bad game. The Dogs will need Shasby to be on his game, and I hope to see good things from Urquhart and Lambert who I personally haven't been that impressed with what I've seen. But they have good offensive skills, and LB will need them to generate offense. Larrivee while not putting up great numbers has played well from what I've seen. He does all the little things right and is always working hard.

The playoffs start for Long Beach tonight, and here is a nice article highlighting the goaltenders in this series and the big roles they are expected to play. Half way down it talks about the move that Coach (and Hockey Operations guy) Cameron made to secure Centomo as their #1 guy going into the post-season. I am becoming more and more a fan of his hockey coaching/managing abilities. www.echl.com/cgi-bin/mpublic.cgi?action=show_news&cat=1&id=4475

Long Beach won their 2005 playoff debut last night with a tough 3-2 battle with defending Kelly Cup Champs Idaho. Ex-Habber Bill Lindsay netted a pair and Michael Lambert scored his first pro playoff goal in the win. Centomo was in net, and none of the other prospects had points. First round is a best of five, so two more "W's" to go. www.icedogs.com/fullstory.php?id=218

One step forward, one back.
Long Beach loses a close on 3-2 to Idaho, to even their best of five series at one a piece. The series switches to Boise, so our Baby Dogs need to win at least one to keep this baby alive. Larrivee with a helper, and Lambert keeps his hot playoff hand going with one goal and one assist. Three points in two games for our 20 year old pro playoff rookie.

Ice Dogs storm out to a 7-0 lead and hold on to win comfortably 7-2 in Idaho tonight. They win the series 3-1 and now await the winner of Alaska-Bakersfield, a series knotted at 2 games a piece. Michael Lambert continues his hot playoff hand with two goals and Christian Larrivee ends up with a two point night as well with one goal and one assist.
Lambert ends up with 5 pts 4g 1a in 4 games for the series, Larrivee also with 5 pts 1g 4a in 4 games. Urquhart was held off the scoresheet, as was Shasby who missed a few games due to injury. Michaud watched Centomo in every game.

The Ice Dogs lost a close one, 2-1 in OT, to the Gomez-less Alaska Aces last night. The Aces are up 1-0 in their best of five series. Game two is the last game in Long Beach as the series shifts to Anchorage for games 3, 4, and 5 (assuming the last two are necessary). A bit of an uphill battle for our Baby Dogs. None of the prospects figured in the scoring, but the positive news is that Matt Shasby was back from injury and logged lots of ice time. www.icedogs.com/fullstory.php?id=223

Ice Dogs are down to their last life and in a deep hole after falling 4-2 to Alaska Saturday night in Long Beach. No Habs prospects had any points, and Michaud made his playoff debut and suffered the loss. Series now switches to Anchorage.

Five more prospects get to clean out their lockers, and head home for the summer as Alaska completed the three game sweep of the Ice Dogs last night in Anchorage. Aces won 3-1, with our very own Michael Lambert getting his fifth goal in seven playoff games. Some of the Dogs who missed game 2 with the flu, including Sebastien Centomo in net, were back, but to no avail. I listened to some of the game on the radio last night and that arena in Anchorage (the Sullivan) was really, really rocking. What an atmosphere. Here is an interesting write up in the Anchorage Daily News: www.adn.com/sports/aces/story/6422466p-6301459c.html
