Today I heard from a friend of mine thats an oilers fan that Jason Smith would be getting traded to Montreal. I don't know where he got this information, but I thought Smith coming here was more of something people here were discussing or hoping for. If someone who is not a Habs fan has heard rumours about him coming here it may be more realistic then I at least thought, keep in mind that I live just outside of Toronto so It's not like he would have been hearing this from Montreal Media. Your thoughts on this?

I think not. This team needs Ryan, not Jason.

And that's the truth ......
If Ryan and Jason are coming this way then me thinks that
1) KevinLowe should be fired .... especially when you combine this with the Adam Oates experiment that has been a failure
2) The Habs are going to be giving away both Hossa, Hainsey, cash, a first rounder, a conditional pick, and a player or two from their current roster.
That is not Gaineylike.

I'd have to agree on that front.Lowe in many cases is forced to trade his top players but for the most part he has always recieved some pretty good prospects back. I'd doubt very much we could get both playerts without paying a dear price, which is very un-Bo like I agree. If we had to settle for Jason Smith if possible I wouldn't mind that either,we still need some ruggedness in the back end. HFTO

If Souray is out for 6 weeks. Jason Smith and Ryan Smyth should do for the stretch run!

If Souray is out for 6 weeks. Jason Smith and Ryan Smyth should do for the stretch run! Getting these 2 would be for the Oilers just like trading Souray and Koivu for us (and arguably even better...). The price would be so huge I just can't see it.

It's still all supposition. However, Jason Smith would be an excellent fit in Montreal. Right now, I honestly don't know which of the veterans I'd trust to show younger lads the ropes. Doc, I know you were keen on Souray, and I'll agree insomuch as he's the best of the lot right now.
But, it's a tough call for me, buds. I'm as amateur as they come, but I just don't have that warm-fuzzy at the present moment about leaving the future of the defense corps on his shoulders. We've talked about his tutalage under Larry Robinson, but I'd be much more secure if Larry were behind the bench with Sheldon on the ice.
In lieu of that though, landing Smith would be a coup. A warrior in every sense of the word and a proven leader who can settle down a defense corps all by himself.
Yep, it would be expensive but the price would pay immediate dividends.
That all aside, it's still supposition at best.
Cheers.

I agree Dis. we certainly would be an upgraded team this year with Smith. As well as with Smyth.
...but...
If the price for either guy would have to include Komisarek than wouldn't you get the cold feet a little. Just for discussion sake if I am Lowe and Bob place a call for either guy, than there are 3 names I will want to hear from 'ol Bob and they are Ryder, Komisarek or Ribeiro. Some kind of combination of those 3 could get us one of Smith or Smyth. It's a chunk of your future you'd give away to get instant action... Not necessarely a bad decision but certainly a tough one to make. You probably heard that lady Rumor has it that Bob nixed a deal for Iginla beceause Komi had to be included...

Its definitely going to cost you somebody off the current roster and you possibly may get away with just one if the likes of a Hainsey or Higgins are included. These are Edmonton type prospects IMO. HFTO

I totally agree that Komo is not to be traded. I just think that these two guys are what we've needed for the past 10 years. I was on a Oil fan forum the other day and like us they've been chating up a storm about this speculative deal. The name that most came up in that forum is Mathieu Garon. The deals on that site looked like this:
Garon Hainsey Hossa
vs
Conklin Smyth
Now like us they had the pleasure to see the farm last season. So has Lowe. Now would he want a Hossa, hainsey combo? Looks like most of the fans are ready for a fresh start in goal.
Myself being on the other side of the coin would gladly do this:
Zednik Hainsy Hossa Garon
vs
Conklin Smyth Smith
But deals like this our just pipedreams...But I'd do it. Gives us a Gritty scoring winger, a monster on the blue line, and a good back up with some experience. To the oil, a 1st line winger with speed, a young winger/center with talent, a rushing Dman a soon to be bonified #1 goalie.

Well, it certainly would defeat the purpose if we brought Smith in and moved Komisarek out. I was hoping Smith would be the veteran defenceman we need to bring along Komisarek. I also remember the Iginla deal as well and you're right. I read the same thing you're citing about Gainey pulling out because Calgary wanted Komi and not Hainey. Not going to happen if Komi is involved. But, heck, they traded Gretzky. Cheers.
