Mmmm, first round choice western beef (11th over all in 1996). Seems like déja-vu all over again.

Based on watching some Penguins games, I think Dan Focht is a pretty good D--not great, but an improvement over some of the present Bulldogs. From the preseason on I have been pointing out this deficiency, and it's borne out by some of the lopsided shot totals. IMO the fans were too optimistic.

A necessary move. Lingering injuries to both Komo and Cote, both players who don't shy away from a physical presence, have amplified the problem as well. They just don't have enough guys back there who will lay out a forward or make them pay the price in front of the net. Gainey and company continue down a trend of adding size, toughness, and grit through free agency or waivers: Langdon, Begin, Ivanans, Morgan, Dusablon (injured?), and now Focht. The core of skill players remains intact, but it finally has some minders in tow.
