After the first period there is no score. Dan Ellis makes a nice glove save on a 4-on-3 powerplay for the Moose near the end of the frame.
Game is shown live on Sportsnet to those who wish to see it.

First impressions are that we have some decent speed (as do the Moose), but that we're a bit weak on the back line. Komi's addition is critical, as would be Cote's return. Shasby didn't make any glaring errors, but gives me the feeling he could use some ECHL time. Nice set up by Thinel to Morgan, but a really crappy shot by Morgan.

Thinel picks up on a rebound from a scramble and tucks the puck into a yawning cage. 1-0 Dogs after two.

Better 2nd period as (until later in that period anyway) we weren't giving the Moose much in the way of good scoring chances. Kostco started getting more ice time. Am I impressed with him? Yes, but not because he's dominated, which he hasn't. He played more, but still not with a lot of ice time, yet in that space, he hit the post, he freed himself up for a set-up by Chris Higgins on which Flaherty had to make a good save. He made a good pass to Jancevski (who has concrete legs and couldn't get the pass up to his stick) and made a nice outlet tip from his own end. So without doing anything really outstanding he had a hand in several good scoring chances. The really encouraging thing is that when he does start to impose his game on the ice, he'll be even more dangerous.
A number of guys picked up their game in that second period. Thinel, who had a decent 1st period as well, is exhibiting his smarts. He's a guy who thinks a mve or two ahead of everyone else. Still a smallish guy, but his skating isn't atrocious and he gets open and remains dangerous.
Higgins made few mistakes and is proving a handful for the Moose defense. His strength is almost there. He manages against most players and gets outmuscled only occasionally.
I have to comment on one play by AK near the end of the period. It was in the Moose end near the left boards around the face-off circle. He had the puck passed to him and a Moose player ran at him to knock him off the puck. Kostitsyn was standing still as the got the puck and he looked a lot like Kovalev or Leclair, just letting the checker hit him and bounce off. He may be a lot stronger than we think.
Plekanec and Ward have been playing well. Plekanec also has a lot of smarts. I was a little hard on Shasby earlier. He looked ok in that 2nd. Jancevski has his problems and Daley has a very hard time handling bigger guys. He should look at video of the Cube.

Third period let-down. 2-1 loss.
These guys have to find a way to get more offense.

Question to Habs/Bulldogs fans who have been watching the games: Does Jarvis seem to be doing a good job coaching? From the results both offensively and defensively, as well as in the handling of personnel, I wonder.

He seems to be a really good motivator from the short clips they showed of him. The team has gotten considerably younger in the past year, so you can't do much to discourage them or they'll quit trying.
Locke and Kostitsyn look like they're about to really break out soon, though.

From the results both offensively and defensively, as well as in the handling of personnel, I wonder. He's got Hainsey and Daley together, his best puck moving d-men. The other guys aren't as accomplished. But the team is young and a little weak on the blue line and when Danis isn't playing, goaltending is mediocre. I don't think its Jarvis as much as the talent and age level. In the AHL, experience can make a big difference.

In the AHL, experience can make a big difference. I haven't watched the third period yet, but I thought I saw Hainsey-Focht and Jancevski-Daley pairings most frequently during even strength in the first and second. Also, I've read a lot about how Jarvis likes to mix up the lines, but he was very consistent last night, at least in the first and second periods: Ott-Plekanec-Ward Lambert-Higgins-Thinel Ivanans-Morgan-Ferland Carpentier-Locke-Kostitsyn Hainsey-Focht Jancevsky-Daley Shasby-Archer A few observations about the lineup: 1. I was surprised to see Higgins at C. Has he been lining up there a lot this year? 2. Where was Milroy? 3. Locke and Kostitsyn didn't get enough ice time. 4. Higgins carried his line; Thinel showed the odd flash, but Lambert was mostly invisible. 5. No wonder we're having trouble scoring, there really isn't a lot of firepower in the first three lines. Given that the Dogs are having such a hard time scoring, I really hope that Jarvis starts to give his two best offensive weapons more icetime. The AHL is a development league; these two guys will play on the first two lines if/when they reach the NHL, so it's where they should be developed in the AHL. Conversely, Ott and Ward will be 3rd line guys in the NHL, so they should be playing more of a checking game in the AHL, despite their experience. This is not intended as a criticism of Jarvis, the man obviously knows what he's doing.

Well, technically they're still finding their legs in the AHL. As soon as their stamina increases and they're creating more offense, that's when they'll see more ice time. The problem is, there probably won't be much of an increase of ice time until another few months or so around the All-star break. This team will probably hover around .500 until then (or maybe even under, I dare say) until that point.
