He's 35 years old....undersized, played 55 games, has 6 assists, and is a minus 9. I don't get it.

(I'm not looking anything up at this point). In fairness, I recall thinking he's not a bad player, but there's no getting around he's small. Now....if he plays and Tinordi gets sent back to Hamilton, it's time to fire the entire top management and start fresh. Can I suggest Pat Lafontaine? I hear he's available . French name too. Oh, I forgot, Lafontaine is small as well.

Stupid trade. We traded.Diaz to clear up a spot, and now fill it with Weaver. Waste of a chance to draft a hidden gem.

Right handed, defense first (and only) mentality, #1 shot blocker in Florida, very cheap (1.1mil), UFA at the end of the year, easy to acquire (5th)...
...typical HABS on deadline season.

Couldn't we have picked up a d-man off waivers and kept our pick?

Basically Diaz and a 5th for Weise and Weaver.
Meh. Pretty even when you look at it that way, in my opinion.

Weaver and Diaz basically cancel each other out (both RH shots on the last year of their contracts). Neither will be back here in any case, so the Habs basically gave up a 5th round pick for Dale Weise. No big deal either way.
I will say that I strongly endorse the idea that, ideally, you want 3 LH shots and 3 RH shots on D. A GM should actively try and get that balance. I think it's one of the reasons why Emelin has struggled coming back from his injury and playing on his wrong side.

Not sure I follow the logic of this move?....just for a RH shot? Older and smaller fits the profile and the sweater perfectly ....what else would you expect?. Maybe Tallon has pictures of MB from the Chicago days.
Underwhelmed to say the least with MB and company so far. Maybe they will surprise us but I won't hold my breath.

MB waives Drewiske and trades for a defenseman who could have likely been had on waivers who is not much better. Perhaps I'm not that clever...

There better be something brewing or else this is a waste of time. At least this guy does not have a name that sounds like it should be in the PGA.

Just read a comment that Weaver has more points than Clarkson at a fraction of the cost. Ouch, that hurts if you're a Leaf fan. I wish I had paid more attention when we played Florida, but I believe he's a pretty good skater and he gets the puck out of his own end nicely. Right now, those two things look pretty good and if we're talking about a 5-6 dman, that's ok. I don't think he's going to take time away from Murray, though, unless Tinordi gets moved over to the left from the right and Weaver takes his place. Weaver and Tinordi would probably work ok, a veteran and a rookie, both great skaters and Tinordi has the toughness to replace Murray. If we can bring Serge Savard out of retirement, we'd have the Weavers and Spinners.

I think this trade also speaks to the slow return to form of Alexei Emelin. I was a HUGE fan of Alexei last year and thought we had found our rugged, physical, shut-down dman with a knack for big hits. Kind of like our version of Ryan McDonagh (ouch). But it has been a big struggle for Emelin this year. Everything seems to be off - his confidence, timing, awareness. And it doesn't help that he's playing on the right side.
Weaver is smaller, but phyisical like Emelin and plays tough minutes in Florida. I can see him being paired on the right side with Markov or Emelin, but in any event I hope MT finds a way to move Emelin to his natural side and give him some easier assignments so he doesn't have to struggle so much.
I actually think this might be the first intelligent move Berg has made. Weaver isn't the puck mover Diaz was, but I think Berg recognizes that he at least needed a RH dman who is tough and can play a regular shift.

In this vid he absolutely plants Dupius along the boards... a great clean hit
Here he sticks up for his goalie, he gets popped good by a bigger guy but comes back swinging.

He's got some grit to his game, but he's not big enough to clear the front of the net. There isn't a guy out there that can be had that has 4" and 30lbs on Weaver for a similar price?

MT likes his small players with big hearts... look at how many chances DD and BooBoo got to get going. Eller, Tinordi nada... nothing... Bourque is the wrench in this argument though.

Well, it would appear that getting a RHD was priority. If it gets Emelin back on the left side I'm all for it. Other options at that price range (cap hit) are few. Mark Fayne, for example. Sarich would have been a nice addition, but the Avs are in the playoff race and he isn't getting moved.
