Wow, I really liked the guy. To me, he was the real "little guy" who served us all.
Worse of all, he retired only to be strucked down before he could put up his feet and look back. That is simply not fair play.
A deep sigh and bow. RIP.

The article said that Mr Flaherty had been battling health issues for a few months prior to him leaving parliament.
You're right about him, HA. He wasn't an offensive person. He was one of the few in government we could trust to balance the books. I also would have trusted him as Premier of Ontario. Imagine Ontario with a balanced budget.
A big (in stature) politician, a big family guy and a big loss.
RIP

Much rather spend my last days, however long or short they are, with the people who mean the most to me rather than slave away at a desk. 64 is way too young to be passing on!

a total shock to everyone. the disease that afflicted him [bullous pemphigoid, a skin autoimmune disease] caused great discomfort but not his demise. in fact, he was actively seeking input from the ethics commissioner to discover what he could or could not do in the private sector.
who knows when the heart will give out?

And brought up as a hab fan too!! You have the greatest reason in the world to retire! This is a bit of a sore point for me. I'm set for a comfortable upper middle class lifestyle for the rest of my life....and last night, I spend all night re-designing tooling to launch a new product line. I'm horrible at doing nothing.
