I've always been intrigued by O'Byrne, ever since Red Line listed him as a "sleeper" before the draft. Saw him play a couple of times last year, and while he looked very raw, there was no denying his size, or his skating ability (though he was much better going forward, than going backward). He reminded me a lot of Komisarek, actually, in that he was physical, without being an overly great open-ice hitter. More of a punisher along the wall, kind of thing. Also tended to run around a bit, but that was probably to be expected from a young defenseman like him.
Barring a spectacular 2nd half, I would think that next year will be a crucial one in O'Byrne's development. If his offensive game comes around, I would expect the Habs to make him an offer and lure him out of college. But if not, they might just leave him down there to finish his degree. Either way, I would think he's a good 3 years, minimum, from even getting a sniff of the NHL...

As a midget, O'Byrne attracted enough attention to be drafted by the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat Tigers...
Hard for me to picture anyone 6'5 223lbs ever being a midget.
Good article by Hickey. Thanks NWT.

He picked up another point last night (Jan 7) in a 4-2 win over Brown.
It would be interesting to see how he stacked up against the Canadian defensemen on the WJC team.

Big Ryan, fellow Hab prospect Jon Gleed, and the rest of his Cornell Big Red will be taking on Clarkson on Friday January 28th. For those of you who get the NHL Network, they are showing the game starting at 8:00pm ET, 10:00pm as part of their coverage of 25 NCAA Division I games this winter. The Score arranged a similar broadcast arrangement last season with the US based CSTV. www.tsn.ca/ncaa/feature.asp?fid=8705
