Gagner has been on borrowed time. Purcell gives the Oilers a bit more edge.

Gagner wasn't a Bolt long. He and Crombeen have been traded to Arizona for a 6th round pick in 2015. Tampa sheds 2/3 of Gagner's cap hit of $4.8 million and all $1.15 of Crombeen. So, Bolts clear $4.36 million in cap space for a 6th rounder.

All these recent trades should serve as a warning to those that expect big retuns on the Habs players rumoured to be on the block. These trades have been eye opening to say the least.
My expectations have now been tempered. If Gorges and/or Plekanec are dealt, it will likely return not much more than cap space.
I can't understand what is going on with trade values at this moment.

Well I think if we're comparing hockey deals to salary dumps, it's apples and oranges. Gagner for Purcell seems fair value. As a hockey deal that makes sense. Evaluating Gagner's value based on a salary dump enters a very grey area. I think it sets a certain bar, but I don't think it reflects true value for the player. It's more a reflection of how the league views tje player and his contract.
Imo, plekanec and Gorges are better players than Gagner. Either player has value in a hockey trade, that I would think exceeds Gagner's return from Tampa. As strict salary dumps it's a crap shoot. If cap space is king, Gorges might be worth the most considering his contract is cheaper than the others.

The difference for Plekanec or Gorges is that there may be more than one or two destinations to send them to. Unlike Gagner, Kesler and his NTC, etc. MB would have to evaluate any potential deals and figure whether any would be worth it. Kessler had only named 2 places. Gagner had been on the market for a while and no takers. There's also the problem of a lot of teams are fairly close to the cap even though it went up.

Sounds like Tampa going to sign a big name tomorrow Brian Lawton was tweeting that they're pushing hard for Iginla and Brian Boyle. If Iggy signs there, it's a cash grab imo. I don't think their defense is good enough. They have $61,026,635 million committed to players for next season. That's just under $8 million available. I'm not sure how they're going to sign an Iggy type of player AND address their issues on defense.

Weiss I was never a fan of Gagner. Even in the WJC I didn't think much of him. He must have got most his points from Kane in his draft year. Speaks volumes on watching who draftees linemates are and caliber of team offense when at the draft table.

I don't see Garrison as a savior when you have Carle, Brewer, and the aging Ohlund under contract. Hedman is a man a lone.

Garrison is also reputed to have had the poorest possession stats on the Vancouver defense last year. I don't think he's that bad, but no, he's not a saviour.
