Wish it had been handled differently but Gorges was a major caphit and his play had tailed off last couple of years.

Should be a very high pick imo usually someone drops from first round to early second rounder... But can't say anything bad about gorges... Great teammate

It will no doubt be a fairly high 2nd.

If his contract was 2 million a year cap hit, I think he would still be here. Maybe when his contract with Buffalo is up he can come back and become the teams new version of Weaver.

So it seems they decided to keep Markov instead of Gorges. Considering their ages I'm not sure that is the right move.

It's Minnesota's 2nd rounder though, so don't go thinking this is a sure-fire 31st overall.
We all wish things hadn't gone public, but I think it made sense to move Gorges, given that his salary was high for what he could contribute. With him and Gionta leaving, Bergevin's comment that "we can see the leadership going from one group to another" makes a lot of sense.

I wish it was a roster player but given it's Buffalo, there is not much there.

Hate this move but I'll have to trust Berg's judgement it was necessary. Lotta heart leaving although Weaver helps

On his TSN interview Gorges said that Buffalo was one of the new teams on his expanded list.

On his TSN interview Gorges said that Buffalo was one of the new teams on his expanded list. As I said in the resign/let go thread, he and Gio were clearly talking. He knew full well that Gio was likely headed there, and it's the sole reason that Buffalo was added to the list.

I still don't understand Buffalo over TO. Something tells me it was a big fu by Berg to send him to the bottom of the NHL heap.

I don't think Berg was happy the way this whole issue opened up with the leak, and if the offers for Josh were fairly equal, I suspect he wanted to do something for Gorges, and if it was clear Gionta was going to Buffalo, which a few phone calls could have established, then he made it happen. Also, Buffalo is the team least likely to pose a threat in the next year or two (but look out for years 3 and onward)

Wish it had been handled differently but Gorges was a major caphit and his play had tailed off last couple of years. I agree.... He's signed for another 4 years and if you take out your crystal ball out......say if tinordi or Beaulieau out play him.......how do you trade a bottom pairing guy that seems to have lost a step making 4 million Great guy but you can't fall in love with a player anymore.....he played with heart, getting plastered to play a puck or jumping in front of pucks.... But was never really great skater...never a great zone clearer plus under sized...... Imo time to move on

Given TO signed Robidas, lesser player than Gorges. They no doubt wanted to get a vet to help the young ones. Glad they got Robidas and not Gorges. What does this all say about Captain Phuff.
Will always respect Gorges for his play and refusing to go to TO. Tells me he saw this as more than a business and that he, like a fan, got into the rivalry and it was more than just a game! Tip of the hat!

When you think of it Montreal got Gilbert and Weaver plus a second rounder for Gorges. With the Cap space of Gorges gone they had room to sign both players at almost the same Cap space minus 600k. That is shrewd asset management by MB imo.

I'm convinced that Roman Polak was going to be the roster player coming back from Toronto in exchange for Gorges. Would have been a great trade imo.
I've always liked the heart and soul players and Gorges is one of those guys that gave his all. But it's easy to overvalue these types of players and I think that's what we did with Gorges and even Ryan White for that matter. They're both slow, unskilled and uncreative. It's time we develop a heart and soul team rather than rely on a handful of guys to display these characteristics.
On thing though: Gorges has been pushed around by the organization on more than one occasion now. I think he at least deserved to leave on a good note.

That is shrewd asset management by MB imo. You said it Willie D- good asset management! How many times did posters here complain about the way Gainey handled assets....still makes me shudder. Bergevin is slowly upgrading the overall team talent. Yes it will be hard to replace what Vanek brought during the regular season but he was never going to sign with the Habs anyway so can't criticize Bergevin for that. As for finding those goals & points in a UFA - hard to do especially when Subban has to be signed. Also there aren't a lot of those types to be had anyway - too many are long in the tooth & looking for big money in long contracts and if Gionta's deal is any indication there are a lot of GMs out there who are silly enough to overpay & lock themselves into bad Cap situations. Maybe Berg has something else cooking that will help. But I think 7teen makes a good point when he says some of those needed goals/points should come from Galchenyuk making a big jump up in production. I also think Bergevin in the longer term wants to start getting that scoring from the prospects the Habs are drafting. With a Cap you just cannot go out and spend a lot of money on UFAs and have a strong enough supporting cast & depth to win a Cup. You need a continual infusion of young & cheap talent at least until the rest of the team is ready when you go for a big time UFA in his prime.

@tsnbobmckenzie: Cody Franson was TOR player going to MTL for Gorges. Would have think he's still in play with TOR acquisition of Polak and Robidas. Rather have a 2nd....thx gorges

Yeah, he got a huge contract when it was his turn. He's not been more than a #4 and was paid like a #2. I think the team treated him pretty good.

In Berg's pressed today, he was adamant that the Gorges leak on the TO deal did not come from the Habs.

I think it was 2011-2012, Gorges wasn't pleased coming out of contract negotiations. There was a double standard in the way management addressed Gorges' and Markov's knee injuries. There was an article about it way back when.
