If he does then it will the second with the Avs. There's a pattern there and you have to wonder if the Avs will walk away if the decision goes against them (is that still an option). Might make it harder to trade him, as well. Denver PostCheers.

I believe it's still the option to walk away. The arbitration, and how the player values himself, has always been a concern of mine with ROR. He's 23, and just put up his first 60pt season. He had 20 points in 29 games of the lock out year, and 55 in 2011-12. That was the year he went to arbitration and got a 2 year $10 million deal ($3.5 million + $2.5 million bonus, $6.5 million).
I think a guy making $6.5 million should be putting up more than 64 points. That is no doubt the Avs position.

I believe it's the team that asked for the arbitration this time. I don't know if the same rules apply. They might be the other way around. Team asks for arnitration, player takes it for one or two yrs. Maybe the option to walk away falls on the player himself?

I believe the only difference is that a player can only be taken to team-elected arbitration once in his entire career. So if the Avs take O'Reilly to arbitration, no other team if he gets traded or signs can ever take him to arbitration. However, a player can take a team to arbitration as many times as he wants

So Patrice Brisebois confirmed on the Dave Morissette show that Bergevin tried to acquire Reilly a couple of years ago, when he was holding out.
I don't know if the way Reilly's contract situation has subsequently panned out (or the way he has played for that matter) has changed any of that, but now that Galchenyuk is back on wing...
There has been a lot of drama surrounding Reilly (at least financially) and that's pretty alarming concerning he's still just 23 years old. It's also a little difficult to project what he's ultimately going to become. Colorado is and has always been a pretty free-wheeling team, so while his offensive numbers are good they aren't great. But then again, he's also still only 23. Does he have first line potential? Or is he the next Tomas Plekanec? A grittier Tomas Plekanec is definitely a nice player to have... but perhaps not if it comes with the contract battles that Reilly seems quite willing to wage, and ESPECIALLY not if he's going to bolt in a year and half because of his seemingly inflated sense of monetary worth.
Either way, cue the rumor mill and wild trade suggestions...

some chatter of talk between the Avs and the Sabres . . . Myers going the other way . . . but that Roy likes O'Rielly.
however, as a UFA after next year . . . and that "inflated sense of monetary worth" . . .

Bergevin must think we'd be a better team with him in the lineup and he'd be right ... that said, he's already held out twice to this point in his career ... that may change as he matures, sure, but there's a pattern here ... still, I'm not the one (literally) making the calls ... if Bergevin thinks it will work then I'll support him ... Cheers.

Those references are essentially what Bob McKenzie wrote in a piece a day or so ago. The chatter may just be people repeating McKenzie's thoughts. His conclusion was that it's a decent hockey trade, but that it was more complicated than that. No one is going to want O'Reilly without some confirmation he can be signed after his current contract expires. From what we know of his contract history, he tends to value himself very highly, more highly than I think he's worth anyway. $6MM for what is essentially a good #2 centre is too much. He also hasn't matched his career year from when he 'earned' that big contract. I like his skill set, (a bigger, more aggressive Pleks), but that doesn't make him an elite player or a gamebreaker. He's going to want more in the next contract because he'll be a UFA. Can you see $7MM or maybe even $8 for O'Rielly?

Noooooo!
Don't want an overpaid inflated ego on the team. We already have one.
