If Bergevin had to give Subban 7.75 million two years ago he would have been lynched. A defenseman, with NO hardware, with all kinds of holes and questions in his game, coming off an ELC .... And signing him to THE highest paid defenseman back then.?? Two years ago, we could have signed him long term to less than what Karlsson, the reigning Norris trophy , was given .... 5.5 million to 6 million. Let's not kid ourselves, the board was split on giving him big bucks cause he proved nothing. But the big bucks were about 2 million a season less than the 7.75 calculation over ten years. For only twp yrs though. If he would have signed at $5.5M for 6Yrs, How much would he be worth in 4yr? The savings here seem astronomical on the long run. This is all, of course, depending on Subban being everything we know he can be, that is an HOF defensman. Now, the averaage says for the first two yrs(bridge yrs) he's paid $2M more than you think he would have gotten, but the next 8yrs $2M less than he's getting. I don't see any scenario where Subban excels where we would save more money. But you are looking back in hindsight. Two years ago, Subban had achieved nothing....giving him 6 million a year would have been purely on potential, and an extreme overpayment, even if on a 5 yr deal. After he won the Norris, sure, maybe we could say, "wow, we got off good there". But two years ago , no one knew what we had. And we we could have given him 1.8 million less than the highest paid defenseman in the league, ..., based on him doing nothing.

the Sean McIndoe conclusion: And so we’re left with a number that feels like it’s too high, and probably is — right up until the next Subban-type player signs his deal. By the time we’re a few years into this one, it probably starts to seem like a bargain … as long as Subban keeps playing at a Norris contender’s level.read it here

Saw this on twitter today......imagine if Bergeron didnt make this signing when he did lol..concerning the Flyers funny how the mighty have fallen....now they resort to cherrypicking other teams best players(if Friedman's was right on this one), especially defencemen. not that long ago they were amount the elite.
Chris Nichols @nicholsonhockey Friedman: "If Montreal hadn't signed Subban, I think Philadelphia was prepared to make a big offer for him." #Flyers #Habs
